Ok, my friends and I meet up every couple of weeks and buy card games to play while relaxing with a beer and a pizza/noodles/rice etc...

But we only have a couple of games so far. Last week we played monopoly and a wicked card game called Saboteur. I was curious if anyone else knows of any other simialr games that are fun to play in medium to largish size groups. We also have a game called cockroach salad, but we haven't got around to it yet.

So any ideas/thoughts?

Well pictionary man is quite fun. You try to draw pictures outfits or whatever on a plastic 3D guy. Euchre is one of my favorite card games pretty simple to play and only requires a partial deck to play. Google it as the internet will explain better than i can.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

The Emperor doesn't seem to do much for you but you sure are expected to be mutilated, suffer, and die to make him happy. And is he dead or what? If he's entombed that would mean he's dead as a doornail, right? So, how can he be happy about anything you do, or even give orders to anyone? Are you worshipping the dead now? Is that something you'd really want to do? Because it sounds freaking creepy to me.

A regular deck of cards are not the type I'm looking for. Or MtG. Just a set of cards with a rules set on how to play. I'm not sure what they would be called as I'm quite new to this sort of thing. Something more like Uno.

Thanks for the tip vindicator...

Fluxx is a cute game. If you like Fluxx (works best with at least
three or four players) they have thematic spinoffs like Zombie
Fluxx and Monty Python Fluxx.

Race for the Galaxy is an awesome conquer-the-universe sort of card game, centering around each player trying to colonize/conquer enough worlds to win the game (With very little backstabbery, if you don't like that sort of thing). Munchkin is another fun card game, though the game can change way too easily (In original Munchkin, you could very well get to one level below winning the game, then lose a combat with a specific creature and drop down to level 1 with no items or equipment) and it typically becomes completely one- or two-sided after a short while.

If you count board games as well, Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game is an absolute blast, featuring espionage and strategy, as well as trying to survive through various crises as a team (Or try to kill everyone). It makes more sense if you've seen the series, but it's still a lot of fun to play. Another fantastic game is Settlers of Catan, which puts you in the shoes of a colony trying to settle a new island, along with about half a dozen expansions and variations to the game.

Hope this helped! Just note that these games are pretty detailed, and have a pretty high price tag (Plus, good luck finding them anywhere but the Internet or at a local hobby shop).

SoCal, USA!

So "non-collectible card games"?

Munchkin is a classic, and Rio Grande makes a bunch of these kinds of things.

Also, you can have a lot of fun playing "shoebox" Magic. Just buy a pile of 1000 - 2500 cards for dirt cheap off eBay, and throw them in a shoebox. People then build decks out of the pile. Everybody playing out of the same pile keeps power pretty even.

I'm gonna throw out a reccomendation for an indy game, 'Deathbringer'

Its a dungeon crawler card game made by the fine folks at Whistling Dragon Studios. Who, judging from their website, might be out of business. :/

At least, that's what I've been told.

Well, everything's collectible if you have enough time on your hands.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Carcassone is a board game in which you draw and place tiles to create a mediaeval landscape, which you exploit by placing farmers, knights etc.

The rules are very simple, and there is a lot of depth in the strategy.

It works for 2 to 7 players.

My experience with these games is fairly limited but there are two that I own and actually enjoy once in a while.
Have a go at.....
Killer Bunnies

and......
Wench.

Just be sure to tear up the 'Wink' card unless you like sitting around with mates staring at the floor!

Also try a company called Cheap Ass Games.
If you fancy a one off game without breaking the bank these guys are ace.
The boards aren't much to look at (easily fixed with 1/2 an hour and a colouring pencil) and you have to provide your own dice, playing pieces and sometimes counters (matchsticks/coins) or a deck of regular cards but that's how they keep the price down.
I'd reccommend The Great Brain Robbery for zombie based larking about.

I played a Yahtzee card game last night that was very good. We play a lot of Phase 10 in our family. It can take forever, but it's fun.

Somewhere in south-central England.

There's a great Avalon Hill card game called Up Front which recreates squad level infantry combat of WW2.

All your movement, shooting and other actions depend on playing the right card. Access to cards is by draw out of the pack. It's possible (difficult but possible) to go a whole game without getting hold of 'Fire' cards you can successful use. Even access to terrain is dependent on playing a terrain card to move into.

This approach to command and control is alien and disconcerting to players used to the normal kind of wargame in which you just move and fire more or less as you like. This also makes the rules quite difficult to understand at the first reading.

But it works brilliantly to create the effects of 'fog of war' and the difficulties of command in a small unit.

The problem with this game is you need one set for each pair of players, if you want to play a multi-player game. I've done it, and it's great.

Although the game is out of print, it is being republished soon by these guys:

This game is great. You are trying to collect items to win the game, but you can also attempt to steal from the other player(s). I would highly recommend it.

Even more responses...this is great stuff. We have a week now before we have a game so we have a bit of time to find these games online.

Thanks to everyone who put forth some suggestions. Much appreciated!

<-- In the same group.

The idea is games that are good for "couples getting together and socialising" occassions involving 4-6 people generally.

Settlers is neat, BSG is great but its can be a bit "geeky" for the gf's.

Ideally something lighthearted that makes people laugh or is good fun. I think anything too competitive will be not as good.

I think you guys should get a Cranium set, most of the things you have to do ignore the language barrier with Chinese. We could take out any language based stuff.

Cockroach salad was great fun! But it does hurt my brain. Doing it in Chinese would have destroyed me.

Magblast is spectacular. It has the make a silly sound or miss game mechanic. Just like it sounds. If you attack a ship with a card but fail to actually make a silly sound, you miss. Munchkin is also great since theres so many different versions.

It's funny how much Mag-blast was dramatically improved with the "silly-sound" addition.

I haven't tried this one out yet (Only got it this week, meet with the friends on Saturday) but you might also look into the Zombies!!!! games. Pretty interesting game, and it promises a different map every time. Essentially, you play as survivors of some unnamed zombie apocalypse, and have to get to the helipad (Which is overrun by zombies) and be the first to escape. It's kind of a tricky game, since there are very, very few bullets to go round, so unless you feel lucky, you'll want to avoid zombies as much as you can. Pretty cheap, too, at $25 for the base game, and ~$10 for the various expansions.
