Hey guys,

So after a year of getting started back up again, I have at last finalized my Space Marines' chapter colors. They're a successor chapter to the Black Templars, the Knights of the Red Cross.

Sorry for the somewhat shabby image quality.

Tell me what you think! Constructive criticism is appreciated.

The red looks lovely and rich. I agree with bolder crosses though

Looks nice but you're going to have a lot of players think they are Blood Ravens.

Looks really good so far , the only thing i would say is to make the shoulder pad crosses slightly wider , nice colour scheme though.

Thanks ~UnDeAd~

Thanks for the feedback. Thicker crosses. Got it.

Unfortunately, these guys have already been matte varnished. Is there any way for me to still paint over the varnish without having to re-varnish one specific area, or is it as simple as just applying paint normally? As for the neatness of the crosses, I'm not really the best freehander in the world when it comes to straight lines.

I will keep those in mind once I save up a bit more to get myself a tactical squad and BT chapter upgrade.

And MasterSlowPoke, you are correct. A few of my friends have already mistaken the scheme as Blood Ravens. But even though I love Dawn of War, I started formulating the colors before I started playing it. Bone just looks nice with red.

Final question: Are there any ways to make their armor not look like they just rolled out of the factory? I've dusted up the legs a bit, but I'm talking about actual battle damage. Any suggestions?

Paint the helmets of sergeants bone white and thicken up your crosses.

Doing battle damage on marines is a double edged sword- if you can pull it off it looks incredible, but most of the time you cant. It works well on TS marines, (check out migsula's work) but on standard marines I'd leave it out. The dust you've used works well, IMO stay as is.

However if you absolutely HAVE to have battle damage, do it along the edge of armour plates. Boltgun metal followed by a tiny amount of chainmail in places will be more than enough to show damage. Remember: less=more.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out on a few test models first.

Black Templar armies don't have sergeants. So instead, elite units like Sword Brethren or a Marshall/Castellan are going to have bone helmets.

Another thought: Is there any way of painting bloodstains on red? Because I'm thinking of ideas for a future stabby Crusader squad, and one idea is to look like they just mauled a group of infantry or something.

If you are bad at painting crosses freehand, use decals.

You can print your own easily enough, if you have access to an inkjet or laser colour printer.

NO! No, no, no on the bloodstains! Please don't go down that road and crude up what I see as an above average paint job by spattering blood red all over it. There are methods of making blood splatter on armor and such but with your base color already being red I highley advise against it. If you really want to press on then take a digi photo and CGI the splatter in first, it's much easier to undo.

You are not a bad painter at all but Killkrazy is right, decals will always look better then free hand unless you're Boris Vallejo.

You could do blood splatters on cloth and the bone cloured bits. Or you could mix a darker red with some water effects to get a sort of glossy wet look.

Okay, so no go on the blood splatters. I was thinking it wouldn't be too practical anyways. Thanks for the confirmation.

Corpsesarefun, that just totally made my day. Thank you.

Unfortunately I do not have an inkjet printer, so no homemade decals for me.

Again, thank you for the comments. For now, it's off to thickening the crosses for me.

Now I want to make some red cross blood angels collecting blood in cups. As for the emps champion I never saw this on the black models but the chest is very plain. Hardly seems like the best armor that the chaptor has access to.

Aha, idea! Props go to ComputerGeek01 for this little idea. So I'm thinking of putting a small little aquila from the Commander sprue on his belt buckle, and then cannibalizing one of my older models for his purity seals and sticking 'em on his chest. Yeah?
