I've had that wonderful Limited Edition Space Marine diorama model inspired by the US Marine Corps Iwo Jima flag raising for years and recently decided to finally assemble and paint it as part of a diorama contest at my local GW store. The only requirement of the contest is that some part of the Honoured Imperium set must be used and it must be no larger than 11"X11"X11". The broken aquila model from Honoured Imperium seemed like the perfect piece to use as both part of the diorama and its base. The Space Marine Flag Raising model will form the centerpiece of the diorama sitting nicely in the middle of the broken aquila.

The pictures below show the Space Marine Flag Raising model in various stages of assembly and at different angles. The Dark Angel is sitting on pins without glue. It will be glued in place later to facilitate ease of painting.

The photos shown here are hosted in my Dakkadakka Gallery if you want to see more photos and the full sized originals of what is shown here. I will post final pictures of the diorama after it is fully painted. The contest ends on May 2, 2010. Wish me luck!

That's an awesome model. Ive never seen that before but the idea to use it with the Honored Imperium piece is great.

Can't wait to see it painted up. Good luck with the competition.

I'm jealous. I'll say that right now. This looks like it will come out wonderfully.

That's a great model! Can't believe I hadn't seen it before. Just a quick thought about the diorama you've made: Would it not look better if they were raising it directly onto the aquila, rather than a pile of rubble on top of the aquila? It would take a little bit of converting to do it, but I think it might look more effective. Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing it painted.

I've never seen that model before. Never even heard of it. Must've had a -very- short run. All I know is that I bloody want one, and I'm entirely jealous of you

I would concur that you may want to decrease the amount of skulls and rubble and mainly rely on the aquila as the base. Good luck!

I appreciate the kind comments.

Regarding the metal model and those calling for converting it, though I am an avid and frequent converter that's not going to happen in this case. The Skullz Flag Raising model is a rare collectible and my intention here is to simply show it off in a good light by hopefully giving it a nice paint job, so I won't be hacking it up or making any modifications to it.

I will, however, probably give the Dark Angel a nice DA Veteran Backpack that was not available when this model was manufactured back in the year 2000. I should also point out that the terrain on the metal model matches the terrain modeling on the new Broken Aquila perfectly as they are both sculpted as simple broken ground with skulls embedded in it.

Fair enough - understandable. In that case, can I suggest blending the sculpted base of the flag raising mini into the aquila? i.e. use some sand or similar to bring the rubble from the aquila into the base of the flag mini. Hope that makes sense.... At the moment, the two parts look separate to each other.

The centerpiece of the diorama is now painted as well as the base. Backpacks for the three Space Marines still need to be painted and glued on and a fallen enemy model or two added to the base. After that, a final review and touch-up as needed and the diorama is complete. Here are views from both sides of the nearly complete diorama. Larger versions of the photos in this thread are in my Dakkadakka Gallery.

Looks great. I still think it needs some sand building up from the aquila base into the flag raising base so that you tie the two together. If you look at that first picture, at the closest part of the flag raising piece, the sand just stops when it meets the aquila. If you built up the sand below it, it would really help.

Overall though, this is a great idea executed well. And the painting looks good too.

It looks pretty good, but far too much like you've just plonked the metal pre-made dio on top of the pre-made aquila - which is exactly what you've done as far as I can tell. For this reason I would mark it down as a judge.
Also it reminds me of a United Colours of Benetton advert, but that's another matter...

Here are views from three different angles of the finished diorama with all parts in place and fully painted. The Space Marines, which GW sculpted respectively as an Ultramarine, a Blood Angel and a Dark Angel have been painted in traditional colors for those chapters. The dead Ork off to the side was added to imply that there had recently been a raging battle which damaged the Imperial terrain that forms the base of the diorama and that the Space Marines are raising the flag as a symbol of their victorious efforts to recapture the territory. Larger versions of these images are available in my Dakkadakka Gallery.

Thanks very much for the many nice comments here.

I got lucky twice with this model this week. First, it was the winner of the store diorama contest and then today GW decided to use one of my photos of it on their website. It's featured in the Tuesday, May 4, 2010 "What's New Today". Here's a link to it for those who might be interested.
