The Night of the Wolf

Lhorke never saw who fired the first shot. In the decades to come, the World Eaters claimed it came from the Wolves‘ lines, and the Wolves claimed the same of the XII Legion. He had his suspicions, but what was hindsight in the face of catastrophe? Without either primarch giving an order, two Legions fought.

The Night of the Wolf, they’d called it in the years since. Imperial archives referred to it as the Ghenna Scouring, omitting the moment the World Eaters and Space Wolves drew blood. A source of pride for both Legions, and a source of secret shame. Both claimed victory. Both feared they’d actually lost.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Betrayer

It was a good thing that I had a scheduled painting session with my good friend Annie coming up yesterday, because that provided me with the perfect occasion to put the finishing touches of my Angron model. So here are some proper pictures of the finished model.

Keep in mind that this was the piece of artwork that inspired the conversion in the first place. A fantastic piece by the late, great Wayne England:

Fun fact: I only found this zoomed-out, higher quality version of the picture when the conversion had already been finished: So there are skulls in that tangle of gore in Angron’s fist — who woulda thunk, huh?

Anyway, without further ado, here's the XII Primarch:

Angron
The Conqueror, Primarch of the XII Legion

„I am loyal, the same as you. I am told to bathe my Legion in the blood of innocents and sinners alike, and I do it, because it’s all that’s left for me in this life. I do these things, and I enjoy them, not because we are moral, or right – or loving souls seeking to enlighten a dark universe – but because all I feel are the Butcher’s Nails hammered into my brain. I serve because of this ‚mutilation‘. Without it? Well, perhaps I might be a more moral man, like you claim to be. A virtuos man, eh? Perhaps I might ascend the steps of our father’s palace and take the slaving bastard’s head.“

The Primarch Angron to his brother, Leman Russ
from Aaron-Dembski-Bowden’s Betrayer

Okay, guys: Now I do realise that I might have a tendency to be a bit too much in love with my own work, but I have to admit that I am really, really happy with this model! Are there things I could have done better? You bet! The fur on the cape is probably not as good as it could have been. Using a flesh shade for the shadows on the armour didn’t work out quite as well as I had hoped. But all in all, he really reads as a believable version of Angron to me, and that makes me very happy, indeed! I am also rather pleased with the way his armour has turned out, and if I have one actual regret right now, it’s that the metal looks a bit too flat and monochromatic in the photos, because it works so well in real life — seriously, this guy sparkles from a couple of feet away

I shall endeavour to take some better pictures that actually show off the armour a bit better.

For now, another detail shot at how the Butcher’s Nails, the armour and the partially sculpted cape come together:

And what makes this even sweeter is that the completion of Angron also marks the completion of my vow for the aforementioned “Loyalty and Treachery III” event. I have managed to complete four models I am really pleased with and really nailed down the look I want for my 30k World Eaters:

And when looking at the bigger picture, I have also come one step closer to completing my fourth (and likely final) incarnation of the XII Primarch. Here are my two converted, Slaughterpriest-based versions of Angron:

So this means two down, one to go:

And finally, Angron among his sons (the meagre extents of my 30k collection so far):

As always, let me know what you think!

Thanks, guys!

@ lindsay40k: Yeah, I think those old berzerker plastics still work very well, if used sparingly: Even the comically sized clown hands have their place, as they make for a pretty cool, archaic look when combined with Mk. III parts. It's all just a matter of finding the perfect mix of "clean" Heresy era bitz and berzerker/CSM bitz. In fact, I imagine the chaotic parts (with their added spikiness) to be a pretty good match for the World Eaters' Sarum pattern equipment

Anyway, I've just finished one Angron model just to start on the next one right away -- crazy, right? But then the Wayne England inspired Angron was always planned as a bit of a test run for my paintjob on Forgeworld's "official" Angron, so yeah...

Anyway, the Angron model I have came to me as an amazingly generous gift courtesy of fellow hobbyist Adam Wier. It did however miss a few parts, turning the task of making it whole again into a fun little hobby project The most complicated part to replace was the base, funnily enough, as the model was missing the smaller centre base (the one Angron is actually standing on), but it had the larger "outer ring" the small base can be slotted into to create the bigger display base. Now I wanted to come up with a new base for Angron that was suitably impressive for a Primarch, and I also wanted to use the outer ring part, so here's what I came up with:

A fallen Terminator seemed pretty appropriate for a Primarch

And here's how it all comes together into the big display base:

I'll admit it's a less elegant solution than the official base, but it should blend together well enough once painted. It already works pretty well after undercoating:

There's also the fact that I am not a big fan of the three dying Marines surrounding Angron on the stock base, especially the two standing/falling ones, as I think they draw away too much attention from the real star of the show...

...speaking of which, when it comes to the base's eventual occupant, I also have a small sneak peek:

Still a ways to go, but I am getting there!

Fun Fact: I really suck at freehand painting, but I am getting pretty handy at painting Angron's warpaint -- must be all that practice

As always, let me know what you think!

Hah

I think the collective noun if anyone was wondering is a 'Bellowing of Angrons'.

That could be quite neat to apply to Legions a Bellowing of World Eaters, an Epistle of Word Bearers, a Grueling of Iron Warriors.

Technically Horus is the latinized version of the name. And the plural version would depend on whether the latin version is 2nd declension (the usual form for latin masculine nouns, ending in -us, plural ending in -i) or 3rd declension (singular ending can be anything, though -is and -x are the most common, plural ending is -es)

Huh, now would you look at that? It feels like this thread hasn't been this lively in years. It's just unfortunate that very little of this feverish activity has much to do with any of my work, but rather with a trivia discussion that seems to have spiralled way out of control. What a shame... :(

...

I do really like "An Ostentation of Fulgrims", though. And I'd suggest "A Warping of Magni"

Now, if you'll indulge me, I'll try to get this thread back on track with a new update:

Here's the base for Forgeworld Angron after I blocked in the base colours earlier today:

And here's the finished base:

And here's how it looks when assembled:

This part of the model was a lot of fun to paint, because while I wanted to make it as cool as I could, the muddy, chaotic nature of the design allowed me to play a bit fast and loose and actually turning that into a strength -- quite a relief after all the exact painting on the delicate Forgeworld model.

So the conditions for taking pictures weren't 100% ideal right now, but I did so want to show you Angron at Armatura, so here goes:

So here's a quick look at my three versions of Angron pre-Ascension:

And here's my entire "Massacre of Angrons"

Haha sorry about that! Doesn't detract in any way from just how stunning your Angrii are (there we go! Punny plurals it is!)

Absolutely phenomenal work having them all together really showcases how many neat little touches you've carried over between them. The similarity between middle-Angron's axe and his daemon prince version is excellent (Pitfighter and Forgeworld's axes too).

However, my personal favourite touch is how in the 3 humanoid (as primarchs are definitely not human) versions it actually looks like he's aged. The pitfighter looks slightly fresh-faced, while Night of the Wolf Angron is starting to look a little more sallow. By the time you get to the Forgeworld one he's looking veritably grizzled, perhaps even a little haggard as the Butcher's Nails take their toll.

In a way, this is basically the best possible compliment, because I was really gunning for the impression that this is the same character at various stages in his life — and on a downward spiral, no less…

Here are some additional pictures I've taken earlier today. Some of them show off various areas of the model a bit better than the first round of pictures. I also took some pictures against a white background, in order to give you a better idea of the armour's metallic hues.

------------------

The Battle of Armatura

Distance did nothing to steal any of the primarch’s blunt, savage grandeur. He was a ruined, towering thing of pain-spasms and sutured flesh. Lotara had only ever seen two primarchs, but despite the legend that each was cast in the Emperor’s image, Lorgar and Angron couldn’t have looked less alike. The former had a face that belonged on antique coins, and a voice that made her think of warm honey. The latter was an angel’s statue, desecrated by a hundred blades and left in the rain. Angron was ripped skin and roared oaths over a core of thick blood vessels and muscle meat.

Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Betrayer

Angron

The Conqueror, The Bloody One, The Red Angel,
Primarch of the XII Legion

„This is not freedom. He knows that. He knows it well.

This is not freedom, he thinks as he stares at the World Eaters screaming his name. But the fight is only just beginning.

When the Emperor dies under his axes, when his final thought is how the Great Crusade was all in pathetic futility, and when his last sight is Angron’s iron smile…
then the Master of Mankind will learn what Angron has known since he picked up his first blade.

Freedom is the only thing worth fighting for.

It is why tyrants always fall.“

Aaron-Dembski-Bowden, Lord of the Red Sands

Here are the pictures taken against a white background:

So does this conclude this particular project? For the most part, yes. And yet, and still…

If nothing else, there are still some loose ends left to tie up, namely the display base I created for Angron in his Daemon-Primarch form. And now I can’t stop thinking about a shared display base for all the models — working title: “Stations of a violent life”. And there are even more moments in the life of the XII Primarch that would warrant an own version: his mourning his brothers and sisters on the boneyard at Desh’elika Ridge. The moment of his ascension. Angron holding a freaking Titan’s leg over his head, allowing a horribly maimed Lorgar to crawl free….I need to stop thinking about this!

For now, let’s just say that while I cannot possibly reach the same levels of dedication and/or madness as, say, Reg, maybe we haven’t heard the last of the XII Primarch either…

And in any case, we’ll be seeing more 30k World Eaters for him to lead:

Okay, yeah, that last post didn't exactly go through the roof comments-wise, eh? o_O

Okayyy, I'll just carry on then, because I have a new update for you: In the meantime, I've been roped into joining a small painting event over at one large German hobby forum by fellow hobbyist Aasfresser, and I am actually really happy that he persevered, because it turned out this provided just the kick in the arse I needed to start painting my 30k Khârn conversion. Here's a sneak peek at a mostly finished model for you:

Now the really interesting thing is that I decided to build an extra, helmeted head option for my Khârn as an extra flourish, both because the Forgeworld version has two options as well, but also because 40k Khârn is defined so much by his iconic helmet. So here's my take on a Sarum Pattern officer helmet:

Fun fact, I actually like this version even more right now -- which, to be honest, feels slightly backwards, seeing how finding that bare head was one of the factors that led me to building my own Khârn in the first place... But yeah, as you can see, he's coming along pretty well.

The base has already been built as well, and is currently awaiting paint:
