There is no denying the awesome work done here on terrain.

Ah the thunderbox, Gorgeous work there cam.
See someone is putting their reader's digest subscription to proper use.

Trees & stone walls look great just as you see in the railway magazines!

Matches the cottages perfectly!
Really great stuff as usual.

The little details you put in Cam, are one of the things that make your terrain pieces so memorable.

Not where I should be

Thank you everyone, much appreciated. Love the comments.

Well RL being it's usual self, but sticking at it, just not as fast as I would like.

Here is a quick step by step on how I am doing these terrain bases...

Laminate floor boards, which can be bought very cheap if you get the end of the line, I paid £1 per box (1.2m sq.) 5mm thick MDF.Cut them down to rough size with a circular saw, but if you are patient you can cut this with a knife. Trimmed up the edges to give a slight slope...

Then I get a piece of 10mm thick foam, ( I buy this off ebay, it's underfloor heating insulation foam) cut a bit smaller than the board.

Hot glue and PVA glue to stick it down.

For this base I want a small wall going around the outside, so I cut a line 10mm in all the way around except where I want the gates..

Then out comes ye olde blowtorch, and a bit of "sculpting" can begin...

Where I want the wall to stay I shield it with a non-flammable piece of metal...

A minute later I have a contoured piece of ground...

Next for this little piece I need some expanded PVC 3mm thick. and a rough grid, it is meant to be rough for a reason.

And a bit of scratching around with a pointy stick and I have something on the go here..

Well hop forwards to a few licks of paint and here we have a WIP shot.

Also gradually working on the cottages.

And the last couple bases tarted, thats another 2 tree bases, and a smithy.

Thanks for looking in and hope you like. Let me know.

Terrific work Cam! And terribly prolific. I'm always amazed at how original, innovative and _fast_ you work. Apologies if you've mentioned this already and I missed it, but is this town in aid of a specific project for someone, or for a game coming up?

Not where I should be

Thanks Meer_Cat, It is for twinner and friends in Canada, they have a channel and requested a tables worth of AoS terrain in my style, I am very honoured and love the challenge. Of course the biggest challenge is yet to come, how the hell am I getting this lot posted to Canada!!!

Just a quicky sorry just remembered, been asked several times about prepping the foam, Most of the time I hand brush a oaint and PVA mix all over and then maybe will rattle can it, I sometimes airbrush it with a half decent acrylic, And sometimes I don't mind the texture I get from the rattlecans. There is also coating the foam in plaster or hotglue, giving it a very quick once over with a flame (blowtorch) forms a skin and is very hard. So you see I am a bit all over the place on it, but the main go to is hand brush a paint and PVA mix all over, it is easy and really sticks well. Since I am funny in that I will often apply many different layers to a project, like priming the basic, then adding gravel and painting that, then adding flock and painting that and then static grass and putting a wash over that, all that builds up to a crusty mess that is durable and I hope looks effective.

Not where I should be

Thank you all.

@ Josh, I am honoured, and that is the aim of my efforts, to inspire, I ain't necessarily any good, but if I get you thinking and doing then I have got it sorted.
@ Dave, Seen it done a few times though I do my own twist as usual.
@ DrH, Thanks bud much appreciated.

OK got a serious question for you.

Have a look through these pics and please let me know if I need more, and if I have missed anything, or I should add something. Some is obvious like roofs on the cottages, which I will work on, but my mind is flighty to say the least and I am having to concentrate quite hard on this now. I want to get it shipped before the Christmas rush, so within the next couple weeks.

Pure photo dump...

Some of the questions are:

Do I add foliage to the trees?
I know I have to match the grass a bit, but how hard do I try, I mean not all grass is the same, some is greener, usually in the next field.
Is it any where near enough, this is sat on a 4 x 3 board at mo, and I have been asked for a boards worth! which I would guess is a 6 x 4, so if this lot is spread out a bit is it enough?

Thank you for all the support, and really appreciate your thoughts. Some I might be covering any way, but it will not hurt to have them confirmed.

What about adding a town hall building? Or something to do with merchants or a bar? Old haystacks...a chariot...?

I've thought I was enough flabbergasted with all the former pics...but the fallen tree is for me the pinnacle...true stroke of genius!

And yes, add fallen leafs...no actual foliage needed...that town has something of deserted and lifeless feel about it, so leafless trees fit the bill...but some lost leafes would be good...
Also what about a cow carcass?

Wow Cam that is an impressive lot of terrain. Please do not put down your skills they are way above what you think they are.
I dont think you need to add anything for a fantasy game, the grasses not being the all the same makes it look more natural. Not everyone has a golf course for a lawn. As for the trees I like the starkness of them without foliage, it makes the town look more haunted or lonely. And you know how much the slime fountain appeals to me..

 Camkierhi wrote:

I can't say how much is needed for gaming, I just don't know. More the merrier is how I think.

However, as Vik mentions, you have homes and a church, windmill, tavern (if I remember right), but no shops; every village needs a corner shop / post office.

Do I add foliage to the trees?
It appears to be an autumn theme you have going, with fallen leaves. Trees can't have both (although maybe add an evergreen, there's always one somewhere).

I know I have to match the grass a bit, ...
I can't see any major issues with the grasses. You could add patches of each colour to bases of the other colours (not all expanses of green grass are totally uniform from edge to edge). They don't all have to have an even distribution of every colour on every base, just a little corner here, the edge of a path there...

That's a pretty swell set-up. Is that all of the wall sections you'll be making? You might consider some corners and/or at least one gate.

A Smithy? A place for Police Constable Plod?

I'd leave the trees bare and add some fallen leaves at the bases. Autumnal. Why not be seasonal?
