Ultramar

this is my first tutorial
note that i'm not the very best of painters
but this is just a general out line of what to do
now i'm not good as RAFF
or even Abe at the war college

First off: Base coat
a good base coat can make it a lot easier to paint later on

in the above picture i used a black base coat
you could go for white
or what ever colour you want
it doesn't matter all too much
i like black because it adds low-lights and makes things look more dark and foreboding

the next step is laying down a simple layer of paint on the flaps
because i'm an ultramarines nut i choose Ultramarine Blue

this is a real basic layer
neatness isn't a factor

and next we come to the doors

note the dark angels emblem
the drop pod isn't one i built
i traded it with a friend
but anyways...
it's just like the flaps
neatness is not an issue
once you're done with the outside of the door the paint on the flaps should be dry and ready for a second coat
this time try and be neat

inside doors

same as before
one coat
no neatness
follow up with giving the outside of the doors a second coat

flap details

i painted the receding parts on the flaps boltgun metal
also while you have the metal out you should paint...

the walkway

the harnesses

and the thrusters

to add a little flavour into the DP i painted golden yellow on the edge on the doors

and dark angels green on the top of that centre bit

now repeat until you have the desired effect
once finished with the DP take a thin layer of a mix of skull whit and what ever you used and add a little bit on the edges
here's the finished product

and there you go
try not to criticize me too much
and remember...
ALWAYS THIN YOUR PAINTS!!!!

I've been playing Dark Eldar since before the hype came out about them, so I guess that makes me a long-term player

Just a small tip, have you ever tried a black wash on the boltgun metal? It gives great effect.

i applaud your attempt to educate your fellow gamer.

As far as base coat: Be sure to tip that model and hit it from all angles (waiting for it to dry each time before doing so) so that you get complete coverage of the primer/base coat...

Nice tutorial, but get better pics, nothing ruins a good tutorial like bad/blurry pics.

Nice guide, but things which are patchy like the yellow do several coats. Also paint damage is nice best way to do that is black with mithril silver over with black left around the edge.

Having a drop pod army, i totally understand the whole drop pod painting bit.

However, i have found that the drop pod is a kit that is about a million times easier to paint in pieces. I build the doors, but leave them off from the two halves of the bottom (which are also not glued together.) The main fins are also painted separately, as well as the harnesses, which can be partially built before painting, but should not be attached to the center console. The main turbine at the top can be put together, but should also be painted separately.

Overall, I am a proponent of painting before assembling, but I can understand the opposite view with some models. However, if your drop pods doors are going to be operable, you basically HAVE to paint the drop pod in pieces, and only put it together once everything is painted.

Here is my drop pod after it was painted and then put together

As you can see, you are able to put a lot more detail into the interior if it is painted prior to assembly
