Do you guys pre-post missions? What's the format? Is the sportsmanship just 0-10 rate it how you want to or is it a well structured checklist?

Thanks

Why do all these GTs want to charge 60 bucks just to play?

It's not that I don't have money for it, it just seems a little absurd.

They normally have to pay for a venue and don't do it for charity out of their own pocket. Even with that kind of fee a lot of tournaments take losses in their first few years.

$60 is right for a GT style event, but it is hard to shell out for this event.

They are not advertising them at all, and if it was not for the GW Events calendar, no one would ever hear about them. The people that are putting it on are from the Bay Area, and still a lot of people there never knew about the Conquest Ragnarok that was held there.

People do not want to pay $60 sight unseen on a tournament that has never been held before and without any feedback from the people who are running it. So far they are doing a horrible job with these events. Is it any wonder that they had to cancel the Las Vegas one?

Look at the threads for Bolter Beach and the Nova open and look how the event organizers are publicizing their events and answering all questions. They are forth coming about the scenarios, and the details of the scoring.

This post was the first sign of life from the event organizers which is a step in the right direction, but we will see how they are with their follow up. They have till the end of May to try to make this event work.

Thanks for the questions Hulk

Missions - Normally not posted. But the basics are: Win/Draw/Lose for 15/10/5 points. +1 to 5 more points for completting objectives.

Format - Swiss. Round 1 random, round 2-5 by battle points.

Sportsmanship - 4 check items and a 0-6 personal oppinion.

Hey Y'all,

Just to clear some information up. The ConQuest GT's are owned by Avalon Game Conventions. This is not a Bay Area group, but the do hold con's in the Bay Area as well as other areas up and down the west coast.

In January of 2010, 2 weeks before the Seattle Slaughter I was asked to come on board to help run these events. On such short notice it has taken me some time to get settled and start getting to the point I felt comfortable advertizing and getting the work out.

Although I will be the Head Judge for most of the ConQuest events, I am not the Tournament Orginizer. I can answer some questions about rules and stuff, but others I'll need to forward to the TO to get answers for you.

I'll try and keep an eye on the forums to answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for any input.

For missions are they out of the book or are they TO created missions. This matters because they can be severely imbalanced and posting them early helps mitigate that by taking feedback or allowing people to adjust. If they are just out of the rulebook then it's fine. Thanks for the response.

The basic missions are out of the book for the most part. The bonus points are for completting objectives like killing your opponets general or capturing table quarters or holding the center hill, stuff like that.

So standard KP's, Capture and Control, and Seize Ground w/standard deployments (i.e. DoW, Spearhead, and Pitched Battle) with added bonus points?

If this is the case then it sounds good to me.

Most of the missions are pretty close to the book missions, with some special exceptions here or there. For example:

Caputure & control with spearhead deployment with both objectives being placed in the center of the table quarters NOT being used for deployment.

Or Sieze ground with 5 objectives, one in the center of the table, then 1 each in the center of each table quarter.

The only mission that rubbed me the wrong way was a killpoints mission in Seattle, but after the negitive feedback I doubt you'll see that mission again.

IMO one of the best things Conquest has going for it are the missions, enough difference as to not just be out of the book, but not wonky enough to become totally unbalanced like some of the missions I've seen other tournaments run.

Kill Points do have a modification on 1 mission. Units from 275-349 points are worth 2 kill points, and units over 350 points are worth 3 kill points.

For Seize Ground some of the missions are set number of objectives not random d3+2.

Deployment is out of the book, no change.

I am not sure if there are concerns about attendance, but unless the organization is concern that providing more complete information will actually reduce attendance, it is my opinion, that if more information provided in detail more people would sign up early.

I will probably attend, since I am local, but the lack of complete information makes me feel like either a) the information does not exist, indicating a lack of preparedness, or b) the organizers are scared that the information will scare people away, which is a bigger issue if so.

So I ask, why not just be open and disclose everything regarding the missions and sportsmanship scoring?

It is my opinion, that being more open about these items earlier in your marketing will actually increase attendance and early purchase. (which makes for better overall event planning)

Thanks for the input.

Sportsmanship:

Check all that apply

1 Point: Was your opponent prepared? On time with all game accessories (dice, rules, templates, etc) and a copy of their army list for you to keep.
1 Point: Was your opponent fair? Measured correctly, consistent in die rolls, settled rules disputes amicable.
1 Point: Was your opponent friendly? Introduced themselves, treated you with respect.
1 Point: Was your opponent fun to play?
0-6 Points: On a Scale of 0-6 rate your overall experience playing your opponent.
(6 = Outstanding, 4 = Average, 2 = Poor, 0 = Very Bad.)

Missions. Of the 3 or 4 large GT's I play in none of them post missions early. We will not be posting them early. And yes, we do change them a bit from GT to GT.

Hope that helps.

How will painting be judged?

What is prize support?

That helps. Though you might want to consider disclosing more information earlier, since looking at the attendance of SIS2 and the SF Conquest GT, some of these events might want to change things up to try to increase attendance. I know you guys are following a pattern, but something to consider in the future if the attendance of this event is less that hoped for. It's a bit of a false analogy, I know, but not releasing missions, to me, is like offering tickets to a "rock" concert but not telling anybody who is playing.

Not a fan of the overall opponent experience for sportsmanship points, as this is game-able, especially if we show up as a club, but it is what it is, I guess... (and thats the last I will speak of sportsmanship scores in this thread as it has all been said before )

Again, I have a 90% chance of showing up...
but this is simply because I want to have a chance at playing some folk I don't get to normally play.

Games Workshop supplies Prize support. I do not know how it is calculated, but I'll ask.

Paint Scoring:
Judge Section:
Basic Painting (worth up to 25 points) Check One Box.
0 Points: Army is not fully painted. This means that there are more than a couple models with prominent areas of plastic, metal or primer showing.
10 Points: Army is almost fully painted, but there are a couple of models with prominent areas of plastic, metal, or primer showing.
15 Points: Army is fully painted, but only to the three-color standard of base coating or looks sloppy or rushed.
25 Points: Army is fully painted beyond the 3-color standard for base coating and demonstrates effort in painting, including shading/highlighting.

Additional Painting (worth up to 10 points) Check ALL that apply to the bulk (90%+) of the army.
1 Point: Painting is Uniform. Not a mix of schemes, styles, and looks.
1 Point: Basic Painting is Clean. Base colors are painted neatly.
1 Point: Clean Highlights. Lines are neat, dry brushing is appropriate, inking is controlled and not sloppy.
2 Points: Advanced Highlights. More than one layer of highlight, which may include shading, highlights over inking, blending, etc.
1 Point: Painted Details. Model details are painted such as eyes, buckles, and jewellery.
1 Point: Well Painted Details. Model details are painted well (clean, have highlights).
1 Point: Artistic Details. Models have squad markings, banners, and other details beyond painting the basic models.
2 Points: Exceptional Artistic Details. Any artistic details and flourishes are done exceptionally well and impressive in scope.

Basing (worth up to 5 points) Check ALL that apply to the bulk (90%+) of the army.
1 Point: Based/Detailed: Bases have basing materials (flock/sand/tiles) or details painted on them.
1 Point: Highlights: Bases have clean highlighting (shading/dry brushing). The edges of the base are clean (painted or not).
1 Point: Extra details: There are extra details on more than a few bases (multiple basing materials or artistic flourishes, helmets, skulls, building rubble, etc.)
2 Points: Awesome presentation: Taken as a whole, the bases unify the army, help create a story, or are otherwise outstanding, original, or impressive.

Conversions (worth up to 5 points) Check ALL that apply.
1 Point: Minimal: The army has some elementary conversions (head and weapon swaps, arm rotations) or a couple interesting swaps. 1 Point
1 Point: Minor: Units have multi-kit conversions including head and weapon swaps. The conversions must be for more than a few models in the army, such as entire units or all specialty characters and models in the army.
1 Point: Major: The army has a few difficult conversions (including those that use things such as putty, plastic card, drilling, sawing, minor sculpts, etc.) executed well. Alternately, the entire army features very well done multi-kit conversions (see above).
2 Points: Extreme: The army has some extreme conversions, which could be: a scratch built conversion or sculpt of an entire model, a large amount of models with difficult conversions (see above), or the entire army is extremely converted.

Other Appearance (worth up to 5 points) Check all that apply to bulk (80%+) of army.
1 Point: Display Base: Basic based & highlighted or detailed display base.
1 Point: Advanced display base: The base goes above and beyond a shaded and highlighted display base and includes elements that stand out and/or unify the entire army presentation.
1 Point: Something Special: There is something above and beyond about a model's painting, the display base, a conversion, or anything else that catches the judge's eye. This can be a single awesome model, an exquisitely converted unit, a great back-story or some other element that really pops.
2 Points: Overall Appearance: Overall appearance of the ENTIRE ARMY is just amazing! Everything works great together to create an awesome scene or conveys a story.

Penalties
-2 Points: Army list not displayed with army.
-75 Points: "Did you paint your army?" answer is "Yes", but it is proven the player lied (yes, this will affect the overall score).

Hope that helps

'Ard Boyz on June 12. It is unfortunatly on the same day as the Quake City Rumble that I'm playing in, so no 'Ard Boyz rd 2 for me.
