I did this tutorial last year for Astronomican and decided to throw it up here. I tend to sculpt most of my woman soldiers these days, but this works well for those that don't want that kind of work.

'I have an abundance of parts these days, so I decided I will do something with some of them. I will make a tutorial on how to create female Cadians, a big part of Cadian fluff that is not currently covered by the GW range. Now so far we have had two forms of female Cadian. Over the top ones with massive behinds, busty chests and adult movie star features, and we have then had ones which look like girly boys, with female heads on male Cadian bodies, with the odd deformed chest plate. So I have decided to have a bash at it myself. I want to produce a model that is realistic. A model that is a woman in Cadian standard issue uniform.'

The Torso

1: First, get yourself a Cadian torso. Any will do.

2: Then get rid of the entire belt area. Clean it up a bit, and then file the area that was above the original belt into a new belt. At this stage you should also file down the abdomen plate. This will make the chest plate appear a looser fit, meaning it will be about right to contain the bust. Filing the abdomen plate and belt further back will produce the appearance of a larger bust. Don't go over the top though. Most Guardswoman will likely not be massively impressive in this department due to the torturous psychical exercise routines the Imperial Guard are likely put through.

3: When it comes to the back, scrape the back strap a bit so that it will join with the belt.

4: Scrape or hollow out the neck join a little more. This will set the head lower. It is also a good idea to file the back of the collar a little.

5: If you want to be perfect; the time to break out the green stuff is now. Add a small rectangle of green stuff on the belt for the belt buckle. Push a line in the centre of it. When it has finished setting, add a tiny blob of green stuff to the centre of the belt buckle and gently shape it into a circle. It is important to have a moist sculpting tool to prevent sticking. Also notice that I have filed down the belt a bit more. This is because I was comparing it with a normal Guardsman torso. You should do this to get the size right.

Legs

1: Get some Guard legs. Be sure to use the Command Squad Cadian Legs. They are slightly smaller, so better for this.

2: Cut off the legs from the bottom of the shirt.

3: File the legs a little. Make them less bulky. Also file the shoes. Make the feet slightly smaller.

4: Put it all together! Hollow out the bottom of the shirt bit slightly and pop the legs in. The shirt should be hollowed out to be around 2mm deep for the average gaurdswoman. This will make the model slightly shorter. The more you hollow out the shirt bit, the shorter the Guardswoman will be. Then attach the torso to the finished legs. You might need to file and do some green stuff work for a snug fit. Nothing too major though.

And here we are at this stage. A model that has a more feminine anatomy, and is different from the male guard, and yet still fits in with the uniformed feel of the Imperial Guard, the ideology of one unified mass of troops.

The Head

1: Get yourself a female head. I got this one from Hasselfree whom sell decent quantities of them on metal sprue. At this point you should sculpt any scars or markings you want. I, for example, added a eye patch. Remember; when making eye patches, do not go over the top. The cloth must not be too thick, lest you make it look like a head band with a targeter hanging off it. And remember that most of the strap will not be seen when the helmet is on, so only bother with what will be seen.

2: Next you will add the 'cheek plates'. A common feature of Cadian helmets, these pieces are easily done with extremely flat pieces of green stuff. A bit of filing here and there to straighten it up will be what is needed when it is dry. Remember; having a Cadian head nearby for this stage will make your life a whole lot easier. It is always good to have reference.

3: Then gently pry the plates slightly off the cheeks themselves, thus mimicking the standard style. A bit of glue might need to be used to keep them from falling right off.

4: Next add a thin line of green stuff over or under the chin. When this has set, add a tiny 'blob' for the chin guard. Shape it a bit, using a Cadian heads as reference, to produce the final product. Remember to make it smaller then the ones on the men. If you don't want your Gaurdswoman to be wearing it, simply wait for this stage's work to set, then peel the strap off, using super glue to keep it down, to give the effect of it hanging free.

5: Next, hollow out a Cadian helmet. Make sure you have hollowed it out quite well. Then simply glue it on the head. If you want, you can lop side the helmet to show that it's straps are loose or not done up. Remember to dry fit the helmet before glueing. This way to can be sure you have hollowed it out enough for the perfect fit.

6: Then glue it to the torso. You might want to adjust the collar a little, but apart from that it should fit right on with a bit of glue.

7: Fill the gap in the neck up and your done. And here is another picture of the male and female soldiers at this point.

If you are afraid of all the modelling, you can just add the helmet on without the green work. It will kinda look like this, though bear in mind that this is a tank commander's helmet:

The Arms

There are two methods for sorting out the arms. I will run you through both.

Method A

1: Get an arm.

2: Hollow out the back as shown in this picture.

3: Neaten it up with some filing.

4: File the area of arm under the shoulder pad back slightly.

5: File the arm to be slightly more slender then before. This should finish the arm.

Method B

1: Get an arm.

2: Chop off the shoulder pad.

3: File the area where the shoulder pad once was into sleeve. Get rid of the shoulder lump whilst doing this.

4: File the arm to make it more slender. Focus on the elbow, as it is often large on bent arms.

5: Attach it do the model using blue tack. This is important for the next step.

6: Glue on the shoulder pad. The arm being on the model will help you get an idea of how it will fit on. You can use ether a hollowed out shoulder pad, or take one off the baneblade kit.

-----------

Both arms on the model.

When it comes to equipment, all the Cadian stuff should do fine. However, I strongly suggest picking smaller hands. Check the Catachan command squad for hands that would fit best for your Guardswoman.

I have to say, it is still hard to tell male and female apart - the difference is very subtle. However, this is how it is in the RL milirary - with everyone fully uniformed, it takes a little extra time to read the clues and distinguish male from female.

You seem to have the right idea here, though, and I look forward very much to seeing the end of the tutorial - with hands attached, and if we're lucky, with painted models for show at the end of the article.

A great tutorial for those that want to add some female Cadians - and have them appear realistic which these definitely do.

This tutorial is at it's end. As I said, I did it back in 2009.

Excellent tutorial. The fact that the bewbs are not molded into the body armor is a plus.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

Have to say this is rather good. Lots of small changes which all add up at the end.

Not so keen on loosing out on the height, but it would add variation (which is good).

I personally like to remove the eagle from the chest and add a very small amount of height to the chest armour using GS (probably hardly even 0.5mm), then add the eagle back on.

I'd not thought of thinning the arms and legs, and the smaller feet is a great idea

Overall a great tutorial, thanks for sharing

Loosing the height works imho, and the variation as Silver suggests will make for greater variety in the army and look good on the battlefield.

This is, by far, the best female Cadian I've seen so far. Whether all that work is justified on a 5pt model I don't know but to add a bit of variation here and there it really is excellent.

I'm very grateful for the website lnk as well, as those female heads are much better compared to some sites out there.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

No. I think I might have looted the model for bits, I'm not sure. I might make another one off the tutorial and paint it, if there really is a demand for it.

That's a sharp looking conversion. I appreciate the subtley of it. I really thought I was going to see greenstuff bewbs when I clicked the link, but this is classy.

It's also an insane amount of work to do in any quantity unless you're really, really into this sort of thing. I can appreciate that too though

There once was a debate on female armor.. can't remember where.. but the guy that end the thread used a pic of Milla Jovovich from The Messenger and the message "nuff said" I think it may have been one of the RPG.net forums...

Anyway I like these too, I have quite a few female catachans, for my 1st and Only, but I may jack this to add some more to the Cadian based models I use..
