Subject: Silly question- third party models at independent tournaments?

This might be a silly question, but are third party models allowed at independent tournaments, such as on the GT circuit this year? Or, are only GW models allowed, since the events are for GW, even though they're not run by them?
About to upgrade my army and considering some other model sources... these would be for several entire units, not just a single model. However, lately I can only play in tournaments, so if even independent tourneys don't allow non-GW, I'll probably stick with the basic GW models.
Thanks!

Only each tourney/event organizer can answer your question, as it might vary from event ot event. GW has not released any rules (that I'm aware of) for the TOs to follow.

^^ exactly. But chances are at least in my area you hav to have gw models no one locally allows non-gw in tourneys for large numbers. occasioally you will see a one off conversion that follows the cool rule, but that is certainly the exception.

What Don said. For instance, at the Open I could be convinced to allow non-GW models, but you'd have to give a good reason when playing a GW game (i.e. my army is 80% GW but I made these awesome possibly award-eligible scratch built vehicles!)
Just talk to the T.O.

Like others have said, no hard and fast rules from GW to TO's, so it's going to be up to the individual TO's at each tournament. Each TO will vary slightly in their veiws and reasons. My own are:
-GW is providing a lot of support in the way of prizes and other benefits. It would be rude to accept that support, and then allow someone to field an army of mostly non GW models. GW has said many times they are predominantly a miniatures company. Supporting tournaments is a way of supporting miniature sales. Players showing up with non-GW models does not support that, and too much of it might lose the tournament the support of GW.
That said, I'm not opposed to some non-GW models in someones army. Is it a very cool miniature that works well in the unit? Is it a great hero model that is obviously what it looks like? Some people do conversions that are mainly scratch built or sculpted from greenstuff, and I'm fine with those.
What I don't like to see: "I bought these cuz they wuz cheap". "These dinky little guys hide in scenery better" "I like throwing non GW models in GW's face cuz I hates them" (All of which are answers I've been given over the years to 'hmm, interesting, why would you use those models and not the GW ones?'
So I allow armies to be 'Mostly composed of GW models, especially if the non-GW models work with the army, are nice conversions, or add to an over all theme that shows time and work'.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Did you break the news to them that such models also have a reduced LOS?

Mikhaila’s covered it pretty well, though IME most independent events are quite open to third-party models. Particularly for stuff like units GW doesn’t make, for example Thunderwolves, or Drop Pods before there was a model. I’ve seen full armies allowed, though, as long as they were reasonably WYSIWYG and attractive.

Thanks for the comprehensive responses, guys! This might sway me against it, since I'm mostly playing in tournaments these days due to lack of time for weekly gaming.
It was definitely not a "these are cheap" "these hide better" or "I hate GW" reason . Just some awesome (and expensive) models... still tempting, but I might stick with the standard ones for now after this feedback.
