Some of you asked me to share my weathering process on the aquatic yellow for my Pirate
IG army....
Although this is the most basic of techniques figured you guys may be interested.
You will need
Standard Brush
Wash Brush
Bit of Foam works fine
Foundation Yellow
Scorched Brown
Mithril Silver
Gryphon Sepia
Devlan Mud
Badab Black
Step 1
Prime Black Brush on Foundation Yellow (took me two watered down coats to get a nice color however subtle variation in the yellow yields more realistic results)
Step Two
Take your foam and break into a random little pattern and take out your scorched brown
Dip foam partially into scorched brown and stipple onto a piece of paper / pallat until most of the paint is gone test this out a few times before commiting to your model to get the hang of it once you do you'll realize it is quite easy.
Stipple the model using the foam in a random fashion... less is usually more and try to concentrate on areas of natural wear and tear...I like to go with about 20-35% of the exposed area for a battle worn look but do what looks good to you
Should maybe look something like this
Next I take out Mithril Silver using the technique described above. The reason I use mithril silver is it is a bright colored metal and the fact that it is a cool metal vs. the warmer scorched brown provides a nice but subtle contrast that is pleasing to the eye.... feel free to expieriement with different metals and use what makes you happy. I hit about 10% of the scorched brown areas and keep it very subtle.
Next I wash the model three times
Gryphon Sepia 100%
Devlan Mud 30% in recesses
Badab Black 10% in devlan mud recesses
In the end it should look something like this
Sorry for all the bad pics my camera is w/ my fiancee and I am stuck with an iphone.....
I used other advanced weathering techniques in my models but this is fairly basic and should be easy enough to do your first time. You can also do this same technique with almost any color combo, and feel free to change steps around and try new things out!
I use Oils, Dusts, Testors Dead Flat and a product called rustall to get the exact patina but each of those techniques deserves a tutorial of its own...
Hope you guys found it helpful
Heres what it looks like on the models....
