Subject: Imperial guard - Trench themed (updated Sept 15) Heavy Bolter Emplacements, and some orks
|
 |
Been Around the Block
|
After a long stint away from warhammer and minis in general, I have started up again. I was reading some of the 40k novels and it got me interested in the 40k universe like never before. The novel 15 hours really sold me on the plight of the IG and showed me all the character they had. So with renewed vigor I am working full steam to build a WW1 style trencher army and getting some of my old orks finished up as well.
My imperial guard will be feature halftracks instead of chimeras and troops based around trench warfare. After seeing Dave taiolors work
http://davetaylorminiatures.blogspot.com/2009/02/rummage-through-archives.html
I was sold on converting all the troops from the bretonnian men at arms. Each base section will be done up like the buttom of a trench with greenstuff sandbags. I haven't works with greenstuff before so should be interesting.
So to start things off, the penal squad. The bodies are bretonian bowmen, with heads from microart studios.
Instead of the regular Chimera I went with something a bit more low tech. A converted half track. The is a guardsman who will be standing in the back aiming the multilaser, but he will not be put in untill it is painted up. There will be 2 trucks in total.
this last one isn't related to IG. I have converted a land speeder to be one of the trucks for my ork army. I really like how it turned out and will be looking at getting more to fill out the rest of my trukk needs.
Next time: First I will be getting some better lighting, My colors are all over the place and I haven't even paint anything yet. Next I will be Assembling the main squads and CCS.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Thanks for the good reviews so far. One of the big reason I decided to post this on Dakka dakka is the forum is very active with lots of good responces.
Sorry for the mix up with the source of my heads; Poipo32 is right those are from max mini. I do recomend Maxmini's stuff, its very good deal for what you get. There ork and goblin heads are my favorite. However I am from canada and shipping from the site is to expensive so I bought them from ebay and the seller had them listed wrong. I bought heads and packs to kit out my penal legions. But for some reason I didn't take pictures from the side so all the packs are hidden. I will have to remedy that next time.

The main part of the theme that ties in the trench works is the the bases and the looks of the troops. Regular troops will have ww1 style helmets since I will be useing the brettonian men at arm heads/helmets.

Fantastic novel. I am really suprised by the quality of there books. Any time in the past that I have read a book based on a game I have been disapointed.

to help give a bit more of a ragtag feel I have 2 half tracks of a different make. One will be enclosed but this one will not.
This weeked I will be getting some more work down. I should be getting the bodies for the rest of my men at arms soon, and I will be completing the 2nd chimera and the bases for my heavy weapons team.

Just finished up my first squad and a heavy weapons team.
The heavy weapons team are setup with with magnets so I can switch between las cannons or autocannons. I haven't really done much work with greenstuff but thanks to this tutorial I think I did a pretty good job.
http://darkfuturegaming.blogspot.com/2010/02/green-stuff-sandbags.html
Here are some entrenched weapons team. With a couple of those packs I was talking about earlier for extra supplies.
And now for my first squad. It certainly is a pain to cut each arm to fit the men at arm overcoats but looks good. All we need now is a little putty in the elbows on some of them to help blend everything in.

Thanks for the tip. I will bump up my exposure next time. Big reason I am keeping a log on this is to help improve my work as I go along
Looks like we were both impressed by Dave Taylors work. I saw these types of troops on his blog and was really inspired.

Although the WD article that Accolades post shows the army in good detail; much nicer. I am even more impressed with Daves work now.

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only
I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.

I will have 2 more IG guard squads ready in a couple days, but in the mean time lets take a detour with my new Necromunda squad. These are made with Urban Mammoth minis. As well I have upped my picture taking setup to get better light and I like the results.
Bit of a rush job on this squad to get them ready to play this weekend. But more importantly I got to try out the metals I will be using for my IG.
Overall the lighting is better then before, but still needs to work on my lighting and balance skills.

Hey, all it's been a while since I've had time to put into my little grey men. I sure am surprised to the see dates on some of these posts, but ever onward... even if its just a little bit at time.
So today I bring you some more guns for my entrenched troopers. I really like the Heavy bolter emplacements from forgeworld so decided to make my own.
Now that my troopers have some bigger guns to hide behind they figured it would be a good time for some paint.
Hmmm this picture didn't work out so well, a tad small, so ill get a better shot later today and replace it.

and some Orks
I tried taking pictures of the orks so see if different colors looked less washed out but still looks really bright. When I adjust the brightness on my camera when taking the picture it is either too dark or 2 bright, I tried more and less lamps but didn't seem to help. Any suggestions on how to make things look bright without washing out the color.
