Alright, so I just started playing Tau and need some help with a 1000pt army list. I have a 500pt list and want to make it a 1000pt list, here it is:

HQ:
Shas'el
-fusion blaster
-plasma rifle
-targeting array
-HWMT

Elites:
2x XV8 Battle suits
-plasma rifle
-fusion blaster
-HWMT

Troops:
12x Fire Warriors
-pulse rifles

10x Kroot Carnivore
-5x kroot hounds

1x devilfish

-----------------------------------491pts

I have these other models:
1x XV8 Crisis Suit
1x sniper drone team
3x Stealth suit

So, I'd like some help making this a 1000pt list, and i'd like to atleast have one sniper team in it. Thanks a bunch!!

I've been playing Dark Eldar since before the hype came out about them, so I guess that makes me a long-term player

Shapers only give them a 6+ save, I don't think that will help much

Kroot are meant to die they are bubble-wrap for the rest of your army.
In my opinion you should 3 xv8 armed with missile pod, mltracker, and plasma rifle .
shaso w the same build but add a pair of shield drones
10 basic kroot with 5 hounds (A+)
6 fw these guys suck ass only take what you have too
6 pathfinders w devilfish simple modification to the fw your good
the only problem i see is no railguns tau are ALL about the railgunz

Keep the kroot, get more hounds and outflank.

Fusion on the suits "looks" nice, but not functional when you want them away from hth. Plasma/ML is standard.

Sniper Drones compete with the almighty Railhead/XV88's, so I wouldn't keep them- unless you just really want to.

So in short - get a devilfish and 2 Hammerheads.

This gives you:

Shas 'el with PR/ML
2 Suits with PR/ML

10 Kroot/6 Hounds
6 FW/Devilfish
6 FW/Devilfish

Sniper Team
Hammerhead
Hammerhead

Right at 1000pts pending options.

I honestly don't like Plas/missile suits on a 1000 pt list, or at least 2 of them. Twin missile pod/flamer suits (aka Deathrain) work so well, plus they're cheaper. 49 pts a suit compared to 62 pts. 2 railguns aren't enough at that point level, coming from one who thinks you can never have enough railguns. Tau are ranged fighters, that's all we do. Consider this...

HQ:
Shas'El
Plasma rifle
Missile pod
Target array
Hard wired multi tracker

Elite:
Crisis suit team
Shas'ui
Plasma rifle
Missile pod
multi tracker

Crisis suit team
Shas'ui x2
Twin linked missile pod
flamer

Troops:
Fire warrior team
6 fire warriors

Fire warrior team
6 fire warriors

Devilfish
Smart missile system
target array
Multi tracker
disruption pod

Kroot squad
10 kroot
6 hounds

Heavy support:
Hammer head
Rail gun
burst cannons
disruption pod

Broadside team
shas'ui x2
Advanced stabilization system

Sniper team

That comes to 998 points, assuming my math is correct.
You would need one more hound, a hammerhead, and 2 broadsides. I think that's cheaper to buy too but don't quote me on that.

Why not keep the crisis suits together insted of a team of two, and a team of 1?

Ah, sry I should of mentioned, the Commander is basically the same as the one normal crisis suit, they team up so you have 2 suits with the same weapons outfit, you end up with 2 teams of 2 hopping around the table causing mayhem.

As far as all being separate, different weapons outfits hurt their effectiveness. teaming up suits of the same type allows you to maximize your number of shots per turn.

Ahh, ok.

Would I be able to have the PR/MP crisis suit be the bodyguard of the Shas'El??

Don't have him as a bodyguard, that increases the point cost, the commander joins the one man squad (independent character rules), and then it becomes a squad of two, one is just a bit better then the other.
