I got the gist of it, though I'm unsure who/what gene is supposed to be. Enjoyed it though, I'll have to watch the whole thing again sometime.

I thought it was quite good, I always thought that 'Jim' bloke was a bit of an arse.

Spoiler:
The impression I got was that Jim was the Devil, the pub at the end was heaven, and Gene was your 'ferryman of the dead' kind of character. The reason the woman (can't remember her name already!) was there was because she was dead, so was everyone else and Gene tried to keep them in limbo. He now has to redeem himself by helping others along the path to redemption, while beating Jim into the dirt and being generally awesome

A highly satisfactory ending IMO. Good stuff.

Gene hunt decks Satan get in

I just watched it after having one two many halfs, but that were grand.

Genes obtuseness was explained at a stroke, its all down too him guarding souls against the devil. It was either going to be a sci-fi ending or a religious ending, and I have to say thay took the correct path and did it well. A nice bit when bolls said to keets "I will see you in hell" and he just gives a casual "alright" and walks off. And the change in lighting and character as he leads the team off to the lift going down where great.

All in all a nice wrap up to the series, and one I didnt expect.

Didn't see it. On the whole I think it's inferior to Life on Mars, possibly because John Simms is a great actor, though in truth I only saw about half of the Life on Mars episodes. I think both series were rather hyped beyond their worth (I suppose because Life on Mars was a surprise hit). I quite like the Drake character she's hot, but not as good or as charasmatic as Simms. I also like the actor Daniel Mays, seen him in some good stuff but none of it that I can remember. I think I'll watch the last episode it sounds intriguing.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

Inboud...

Just watched it myself. It left me thinking "Bwha...?" for about 5 mins- which shows it is a classic. No predictable outcome AT ALL yet still epically concluded.

Yep! I have to agree with this.
The only reason life on mars was better was because it was fresh and they hadn't used all thier ideas yet.

I thought all the revelations were all a bit sudden but i liked the pub bit on the whole.
It did take some working out though.
And even though it had the ending with another travaler i highly doubt another series as Gene's actor (phillip Glenster?) said he didn't want to do it any more.

And i think dasterdly dave has summed it up well but you forgot that gene was also 'dead'.

So yeah. i thought it was pretty good. The first series of ashes to ashes really wasnt that good IMO, but it was kinda cool at bits. Second series was a lot better, and the one thats just passed was pretty damn amazing

Twas an amazing ending, tbh, I just thought that Gene was just one of them, but had kind of taken it on himself to ferry the souls?

Also, anyone think that Jimbo's song is a hint at a new series? I somewhat hope not because I think now we know the secret, it'd be a bit strange watching it as most of the fun was the mystery!

I don't think there will be, as the actor who played Gene apparantly has said he doesn't want to do another one.

Ah fair enough, I've just heard this from someone today also, I think he's doing a different series with some other people....

I think in that case Jimbo was hinting that this cycle will go on for ever or at least once again

I loved the ending, too many good series bow out with a lame ending which either rushes things or leaves too many unanswered questions. For me things were summed up nicely whilst still leaving a little mystery. Both Phillip Glenister and the BBC have stated that this will be Gene Hunt's final outing as they feel they have taken the character and the story to it's natural conclusion.

The way I understood it is that Gene's world was a sort of limbo for officers who have died but there souls were too troubled to make the final trip to either Heaven or Hell. When Gene died he was young, newly qualified and full of enthusiasm for the job, this meant that he was ideal to stay in limbo to try and guide the others to the entrance to Heaven (the pub) a bit like a guiding angel. Jim, who if he wasn't the Devil was certainly working for him, had the job of turning the officers against Gene and leading them to the entrance to Hell (the lift which only goes down)

Whilst Ray, Chris, Shaz and Alex all made it to Heaven it is hinted at (when Chris says he had a dream of Viv surrounded by fire) that Viv (the Sereant who dies at the prison riot) has gone to hell, this is probably because he didnt get the chance to redeem himself in Gene's eyes as he died with Jim holding his head before Gene and the others could get there.
