@Dysartes: I've been writing for skirmishwargaming.com for a few years. It's bascially my 'gaming outlet' while on my own site (battlebrushstudios.com) I post about painting and wargames events I attend. If you look around, you'll find that I wrote a whooole lot of articles on skirmishwargaming. Not as much lately to be honest, but I keep'em coming. Especially game reviews about games I enjoy. I've had several of these excellent Oathsworn figures in hand. Some of them are huge, all of them are really, really pretty. Great stuff. Me, being weird, am not all too keen on small companies collaborating with Osprey, but I think that in this case (apart from being an economical necessity, I assume) it may work. IF they give it enough space and don't have to cut anything. But yeah, looks interesting. Problem is that I just have so much fantasy stuff already that I don't see myself investing in a whole new range of furries. Do you own the Oathsworn minis and play the game?

@SlavesTooDorkness: Cheers, but you know what GW figures are like: 80% of the work's in the last 20% of details. And there's a reason why I make WIPs mostly group pictures - because on a single basis these wip minis just don't look very nice.

Now for something completely different - Gendarmes d'Élite de la Garde Impériale!

The unit was set up by Napoleon in 1801 and in 1804 became part of the Imperial Guard (old Guard lateron). If I remember correctly there were two squadrons in existence, and their job was mainly to guard army headquarters, keep civil order, protect baggage, escort VIPs, and so on. Sometimes they were also called upon to execute the law (mostly keeping civil order in occupied cities, hunt down deserters/draft-dodgers and general ne'er do wells). By their nature, they didn't see a whole lot of combat, hence they were nicknamed 'the Immortals' in earlier years, but performed well as heavy cavalry when they were thrown into battle.

Originally they wore bearskins, and only were re-equipped with steel helmets in 1815. For the hundred days campaign they mostly were seen with mixed head gear.

I'm painting a bunch of those guys in their magnificent uniforms and in the 1815 helmets. Which look amazing. If it was socially acceptable I'd wear one. :p

Here's some WIP shots:

These are 28mm figures by Perry miniatures. Unfortunately I only get to paint 12 of the chaps for now. But they're pretty already, right?

Apart from that I took pictures of another Napoleonic model. I finally got off my lazy arse and took some photos of the finished 1/16th French Cuirassier:

hope you like

Right, I noticed an annoying thing when I was about to put the Cuirassier back into his storage box - the plume had fallen off!

So the pictures with the dark background now also feature the red plume on the helmet.

...and another size comparison shot with the 28mm Gendarmes d'Élite I just finished:

Here they are: Gendarmes d'Élite on horse with their snazzy 1815 helmets. Just six figures unfortunately, but still good fun.

Perry miniatures; basing will be done by the client, whom I painted these for.

Hope you like them!

@Cosmic: Thanks very much! Yeah, the Lardies often attach great names to their brilliant rules sets. For some people that's a problem who claim that they couldn't take the game seriously if it's not called "Uberfuhrer Kriegscommander". Which is a shame, but you can't please everybody.

@Dr H: Thanks very much! Yeah, I threw any pretention of subtlety out with those. It's crazy chaos figures, why go sombre?

@Dysartes: Thanks, Sir! Uhm....I like to have the most important colours in place, so I get a better idea of what I want the mini to look like in the end, so I usually start with the hair on these, then face and eyes, and then half the mini's done already. Then you can decide on what to do with the rest. Have a look at how people paint the eyes and work out a recipe for that early on. Go with highly contrasting colours, throw out the 'i have to highlight everything to the extreme' mindset. That works for GW figures, not so much for chibi minis who get their contrast mainly from the colours themselves rather than sharp, angular shapes.

1 Nob with Waagh Banner
1 Weirdboy
1 Painboy
6 Nobz
60 Shootaboyz
6 Boyz with Big Shootaz

@Easy E: Cheers. Well, not more killy than all the other painting, I guess.

Okay, I have to admit that for the latest few steps I broke and divided the horde up in "dem boys" and Nobz/characters. There's a slight light at the end of the tunnel on the boys (ammo belts, details like teeth dangling from belts and such and several ribbons left to do, plus final check-up to see what I forgot). Lots to do on the nobz and characters, and then the eyes on all of the models...

Well, not really. The Painboy's only ca.80% finished, the Warboss 90%, the Weirdboy is still pretty much unpainted (just based and the skin's done). So those will be the things I'll work on the next days.

Hope you like dem boyz!

@Cosmic: Thanks very much! Lots of dakka indeed

Right, feels like an eternity since I posted despite the fact that it's been just a few days.

Here's something new I bought:

In my life I played one game of Ronin (Samurai Skirmish things by Osprey. Really, really solid set of rules) and umpired one. Despite this I have a soft spot for wargaming Feudal Japanese things in 28mm, especially for the wargames table design and far eastern scenery. This may be the only period in which I find the terrain almost more interesting than the models themselves.

A few years ago I took this as an excuse to get myself a 4Ground kit (for reviewing and research purposes of course) and was ..OK with it. I'm not big on MDF terrain to be honest. It works in some cases or periods, but always requires some more additional work to look good enough to me. Just a taste thing, I guess. So this time I opted for Sarissa models (because I find pre-painted MDF completely unnecessary given how usually I have to splap on texture to some degree anyway, and so I get to try these as well): The Dojo (for some reason I was sent a Dojo Assault Set, but I won't complain about free stuff, even though I won't use it in any way), the Rice Store set (2x the same thing, basically a granary on stilts), and Torii Gate #2.

So I started with the Torii Gate, because it would require the most work.

The biggest thing to tackle was to make the thing look like it's made from solid wood rather than layers of 3mm thick MDF. I used a mix of milliput and toothpicks cut to fit, all followed by a bunch of sanding (extra nasty with MDF. Another reason I'm not a fan of the material). Fun fact - Milliput and using toothpicks and white glue: Both methods are about equally fast (maybe Milliput is a nudge faster), but the toothpick approach has this nice woodworking feel to it. So pretty much a matter of tastes.

The four outer posts I just replaced with roud bits of wood right away.

On the other two kits, the Dojo...

...and the rice store...

...I didn't have to do quite as much. HOwever, the roofs had to be replaced; same as with the cardboard roof bits on the Torii Gate:

Here's a WIP shot of the buildings:

On the rice store I cut away on the MDF a little to give it more of a natural, hewn look and I'll add some more details later as well as a base. Then I painted on some wood grain to help break up the incredibly even look of the surface. Apart from replacing the roof bits I didn't do all that much on the Dojo. It's pretty much out of the box. I guess I should add a base on that as well and then add some details to make it look a bit more livelier.

Few days ago I was really fed up with the MDF buildings, so I made these here:

I added three more patches of Bamboo forest to the three I made in 2015 and I finally got to paint the Buddha statue I bought two years ago at a 1€ shop (for more than 1 Euro ).

Hope you like the stuff so far!

@Gitsplitta: Sounds promising. I'm currently cursing about MDF while planning to order some more buildings from Blotz... for research purposes of course.

Last night I put everything I got so far on the table to see what I'm still missing:

The writing on the board on the gate reads "Squirrel Valley", by the way. Well, technically I think it's "Chestnut Mouse Valley", but it means squirrel. :p

So yeah, what this table makes appearant is that I need to put the buildings onto bases. This allows for placing scatter terrain and gardens around the buildings, which goes a long way in making them prettier. For these photos I also reworked my existing two 4Grounds buildings a bit. I also need some fields. Either wheat or I make some rice paddys. Both of which I need anyway for other projects.

Currently awaiting a delivery from Oshiro Models with some more scatter terrain, then I can go ahead on this project.

Also! Them Boys are finished:

Here's a sample mob from minis from that batch:

Only thing that's left to do is the Weirdboy. Have to talk details about this one with the gentleman I paint these for, then I'll get to work.

Also!

My post about the ACW Mule Wagon is online now:

https://www.battlebrushstudios.com/2018/06/showcase-american-civil-war-mule-wagon.html

In this I quickly go over building, slightly tweaking and painting this model. Including the tarpaulin! Hope you find it interesting.

@Gitsplitta: Thanks, I'll go have a look! I'm not really getting frustrated, it's more a matter of stopping myself so I can work on what I actually SHOULD do.

Right, here's the final mini of the army - the Weirdboy:

Hope you like him! Just like every single other mini in the army he's a little bit converted. If you look closely (it#s a bit hard in the photos, but believe me, I have looked closely at every single one of those chaps ) there's not two single minis alike in this army. It's really impressive. I didn't build them, I just painted them.

...and then I quickly painted those chaps:

MEC troopers for the expansion of the XCom board game. It basically adds to the game what Enemy Within added to the 2012 XCom video game.
