Thanks a lot, guys! Glad to hear you like the pictures!

I actually came back from Amsterdam full of motivation and new hobby ideas, plus I've also been hit with a heavy case of the Nurgle bug: Those new Death Guard models contained in the new Dark Imperium boxed set have really made me want to take a look at building and painting some Nurglite stuff.

I started out by taking some leftover chunks from a couple of Dark Vengeance Chosen conversions, some Putrid Blightking bitz and a couple of plastic Mk. III sets from the Burning of Prospero box and turn them into some converted Plague Marines that should look right at home next to the new models. So here's what I had after this conversion session:

During my visit to Amsterdam, I tweaked the guy on the right a bit, according to Augustus' feedback, so he ended up looking like this:

As a small bonus, he now looks like he's actually dragging his right leg, which I think is a pretty great fit for a follower of Nurgle!

And then it was painting time! Here's my first completed test model:

But while I was pretty happy with the model, the green was not yet what I had in mind. So I slightly tweaked the formula on my second attempt. And here's the result:

I am actually really happy with this new recipe, and in fact, out of the four colour schemes I have used on Nurglite models so far,...

this one finally feels like what I wanted from the start, so I'll be sticking to it for the coming models. Next in line is the third converted Plague Marine pictured above, and then I'm off to painting this converted Nurgle biker Lord that I've built for a hobby event over at The Bolter & Chainsword:

As always, let me know what you think!

Amazing stuff, KS. I particularly love the conversions -- fascinating, to see you adapt your style to a new chaos god/aesthetic. The results are characteristically weird and wondrous. I've always felt that many Nurglish conversions end up getting lost in muddy/cruddy paint schemes. Yours still stand out sharply and distinctly.

Thanks a lot, everyone! I have to admit I am rather smitten with the new Nurgle stuff at the moment, and with the challenge to make some of my older conversions fit alongside the new "official" models! Glad to hear this seems to have worked out so far!

So, in the meantime, I have started making some changes to some of the Death Guard characters. First up, the Malignant Plaguecaster.

I think the model has its fair share of very cool elements, but it's hampered by too much going on at once, if you ask me, and there are also some parts that I didn't like, so I tried to address those while keeping the cool stuff intact. Here's what I came up with:

The strange cherub-like face has been covered up with a rebreather (the hood even has a small indentation in exactly the right spot, which was an awesome coincidence). I turned the staff into something less toylike. And I do think the right arm works better at a different angle. As for the right hand, I experimented with the option of giving him some kind of casting hand, but in the end it seemed like he needed some visual counterweight, so to speak, to balance out the staff, and the clunky plasma pistol from the Blightbringer I was already cannibalising for bitz just did the job rather nicely.

Here's the Plaguecaster next to my (earlier) sorcerer conversion:

I also had an extra Blightbringer model, thanks to an ebay mixup, and the poor fellow was already missing a few parts by this point, so I wanted to make something cool with the piece. My original idea was mostly to just swap in a power fist and call it a day, but with a master converter like GuitaRasmus also on the case, it felt like I needed to step up my game a bit, so I also carefully cut away the head (keeping it mostly undamaged so it can still be used for a future project was quite a challenge) and made some additonal tweaks to what is now another Plague Marine champion or even a Nurglite Lord on foot:

And finally, I also made some changes to one of the Poxwalkers: I've really grown rather fond of the models, both because the level of detail on them is incredible and because most of their strangeness - such as the strange angles of their limbs, their manic grins etc. - is actually explained really well by their background. Some of the models are still a bit too out there, though, among them the one in the torn hazmat suit. So I tried to subtly improve him:

Now this may not seem like a huge change, but I am far more happy with the model now: Here's what I did:

1. The oxygen tank messing up the model's silhouette was cut off and reattached to the model's back.

2. The hand holding the plague knife was rotated, so it looks less weird

3. On the other hand, the left arm and head were tweaked to actually make them look weirder: The disease is what mutates these guys and locks their joints at strange angles, right? Now in my imagination, the Poxwalkers' movements should be full of weird twitching and spastic cramps -- like something out of Jacob's Ladder or Silent Hill. Which is why I carefully bent the arm to look even more unnatural. And I significantly changed the angle of the head to make it look like it too was subject to the strange cramps and twitches of the body.

As always, let me know what you think!

Great work on the plague marines. I always find it hard to find exactly what you've changed unless you specifically say so because the cuts are all so clean, and the joins all so seemless, there's really no way to tell what you've made isn't the 100% bonafide GW model!

I had an interesting idea that you can borrow if you like: Some sort of incredibly fast, flesh-eating variant of the plague zombies. Look up illustrations of Lovecraftian Ghouls to get an idea of what I mean. Perhaps the disease was a gift from Nurgle to Khorne, which would explain why despite being diseased they are nimble and fast, as well as the cannibalistic tendencies.

Thanks a lot, guys! I really appreciate the kind words!

@ boundless08: Cheers, mate! That is very nice of you to say!

@ OnlyWar: Hmm, that kinda reminds me of GuitaRasmus' approach to building Possessed (called "The Strain") for his older DG army.

So here's one last conversion for you, and then I guess I need to start getting some paint on things

All the way back when the Putrid Blightkings were released, I used some Blightking bitz and an AOBR plastic Terminator to make a conversion. However, the model ended up in a strange place between a regular Plague Marine and a Terminator in the end. Pretty cool, but also slightly confusing. Now with the very real scale creep of the new Death Guard models, and with the help of the last leftover parts of my extra Blightbringer, I was able to turn this guy into something that nicely fits the theme of the models I have built so far. An alternate Blightbringer, if you will:

So while the model started out as a slightly goofy proof of concept, at least now he can be used alongside the rest of my Death Guard models.

Here are the three characters I've converted so far:

Loving the details and the little changes you've made to the original models, incredibly inspirational if I could just properly learnt o work with greenstuff.

I've got a few small cases of changes on my own blog for the Poxwalkers, nothing major but I also found a few wonderful things I could have done by the time I had already converted half of them and base coated them all. Oh well. (just updated it today for a few minor changes on some of the marines too to make them stand out).

The plague caster conversion is top notch and I'll definitely be doing something similar when I get around to him in my own collection.

I really like that final paint scheme you decided on for the plague marines, what colours did you use and how did you go about painting it? I might wanna steal that ;P

Cheers, guys!

@ Marine-With-Heart: I actually really like the tweaks you've made to your Poxwalkers! The chainglaive on the leader is an inspired touch that I may just have to steal And I am getting such a "Private Joker" vibe from the Poxwalker with the goggles and the Cadian helmet

As for the recipe for painting the Plague Marines, it's basically a slightly tweaked version of a recipe found in the latest issue of WD. Here goes:

- undercoat with GW Mournfang Brown spraypaint
- sponge the areas that are supposed to be rusty (silver) metal with GW Ryza Rust
- sponge the same areas with GW Leadbelcher as needed
- paint the fleshy areas with GW Rakarth Flesh
- paint the armour panels with GW Deathworld Forest
- wash the armour panels and the fleshy areas with GW Ogryn Flesh (or Reikland Fleshshade)
- highlight the armour panels with GW Ogryn Camo
- paint the armour trim with Vallejo Tinny Tin (or GW Balthasar Gold)
- wash the armour trim with a brown wash of your choosing
- highlight the armour trim with Vallejo Bright Bronze (or whatever the suitable GW equivalant is)
- add a mix of GW Druchii Violet and GW Carroburg Crimson to the recesses of the skin as needed
- highlight the fleshy areas with GW Rakarth Flesh and/or GW Pallid Wych Flesh

I think that's about it.

In the meantime, I've been working on two smaller Death Guard-related projects:

One, I have the three snapfit "easy to build" Plague Marines on their way to me, and my plan is to convert a second Marine with Blight Launcher from one of those, along with the one that is already part of the kit. So I have already prepared a kitbashed Blight Launcher for that:

Really not brain surgery, this one: Just combine a plastic Mk. IV or Mk. III Heavy Bolter with the barrel from a Cadian grenade launcher, throw on some Nurgly bitz as needed — DONE. I am certainly not the only (nor even the first) person to have come up with this idea, but it's pretty useful nonetheless, wouldn't you agree?

Further detailing will have to wait until I actually have the models in my hands, though.

I've also replaced the strange, molten face on the Plague Champion with an equally disfigured - yet hopefully cooler - countenance. It's really small, though, so the photo is slightly fuzzy:

Cheers, guys!

So yesterday I received my box of "easy to build" Plague Marines and had to start working on a second Blight Launcher Plague Marine. Let me tell you though, these should also carry a "hard to convert" label, at least if you are trying to do something a bit more involved: I felt acutely reminded of the rigid monopose Plague Marines of the early 90s

Anyway, here's my attempt at building a second Blight Launcher Marine:

I knew from the start that I wanted to use the Plague champion as a base model for this, but boy did the model fight me every step of the way: The original pose is just weird, and I ended up carefully sawing off the entire upper body in order to tweak it a bit.

I also slightly revamped my Blight Launcher, in order to bring it even further in line with the "official" design:

I also started on the second Blight Launcher Marine, although he has mostly just been tacked together for now. The one change I made was to his faceplate, as I didn't really like the way the tube directly fed into his helmet, so I spliced in a rebreather:

So here are the two tweaked Plague Marines:

And while I was already at it, I gave my converted Plague Champion a slightly more Nurgly power fist:

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I really appreciate it!

work on the Death Guard models continues in small increments, as I keep chipping away at those Plague Marines. Here's the next guy in line:

I wasn't really feeling the wood-elven looking headcrest, so I carefully shaved it off and spliced in something a little more classically Nurglite

Speaking of which, I also replaced the forehead horn on my Blightbringer-based Plague Champion. It's a very small change, admittedly, but I still think it works a bit better:

I have also been working on the next Poxwalkers:

You already know the guy on the left. The middle one is actually perfect, in my opinion, and a rather lovely model! The guy on the right received a tweaked weapon, an idea I lifted wholesale from the Mystarikum, as I simply love the "Realms of Chaos"-style look created by the different blade, and I just happened to have a similar Empire flamberge knocking about.

On a related note, I recently received a nice little bitz drop courtesy of fellow hobbyist Aasfresser:

Among the bitz are some early 90s plastic berzerkers (say what you will about them, as far as monpopose models from the early 90s go, I think they're pretty great!) and a plastic CSM from around the same time -- I've never even owned one of the latter before, and while the model hasn't aged all that gracefully, I do think those were pretty much ahead for the curve for their time, especially when compared to the pretty atrocious 2nd edition plastic Space Marines.

There are also all kinds of chaotic bitz and bobs and, as I discovered to my delight, a creepy embryonic rat from a Skaven kit -- I'll make sure to put the latter one to good use on my INQ28 AdMech retinue

@ Anvildude: Cheers for the feedback, mate! Not sure I actually want to change anything about the blade, though: It's an ancient bit, and both the detailing of the blade as well as the actual plastic are so soft that there is very little room for error, and I don't really want to lose the shape of the blade to a cutting mishap

In the meantime, here is yet another addition to this alarmingly growing Death Guard project. But in all fairness, it was always clear that a Dreadnought would have to be a part of this at some point, so yeah...

The thriftiest option seemed to be to go for the Dark Vengeance Helbrute as a base model -- well, that and I really like that particular model: It's fleshy hideousness perfectly goes with Death Guard, if you ask me
So here's what I have so far:

Now the belly obviously needs some cleanup and smoothing over, but the general look is there. The above pictures are in greyscale because I actually used a mix of GS and Milliput that ended up making for a vile, pistachio-ice cream colour Oh, I also used that tin-foil trick again, so the belly remains a separate piece, which should be super handy for assembly reasons:
