Last year a rumor/announcment was made that GW was going to be making a WW2 minatures game, presumably to compete with FOW. Any more news on it at all? I seem to recall the source being an article in Miniature Wargamer or something similar. I think I heard it on the Worlds End Radio podcast.
thanks a lot

Zero news of any type. I'm chalking it up as a total rumor with no basis in fact.
Considering that Battlefront Miniatures is filled to the brim with ex- GW vice presidents and managers, all of whom still have friends and connections inside GW, it's hard to imagine that they wouldn't be aware of it.
It's an odd thing to do for GW. FOW isn't the only WWII game by a longshot, and FOW doesn't really compete with GW games. Very separate demographics with marginal overlap, and very different style of games.
I expect the rumor is just a rehash of old news about "Warhammer Panzer Battles", a game Phil wrote, but was never published, back before he went to work for BF and wrote FOW.

Just look for any of the ww2 rulesets out there made by other publishers and manufacturers, Theres bound to be something to suit your fancy.

A few lines from a mention of the game in Wargames Illustrated 266 (page 4):
"...WAB players from around Europe did battle across several campaign settings and attendees were treated to a bonus surprise appearance when Warwick Kinrade of Forgeworld demonstrated the forthcoming Games Workshop World War II game."
"...the game is designed for 20mm figures although it will work equally well with 15mm..."
"The game is still a work in progress with a release date of "next year - hopefully early on" planned. The core rulebook will be supported by further supplements."
If someone from FW/GW showed up and ran a demo of the game, I don't know how you could dismiss it as a rumor. Why would you expect news and information from GW about a game still in development when they won't even talk about releases for 40K and WFB?

God, I remember about 6 years ago they mentioned a moderm warfare 28mm game...just a rulebook (like 40k converted rulebook to reflect modern weapons)....that went nowhere....

Notice how you gave a bit more information than " Last year a rumor/announcment was made that GW was going to be making a WW2 minatures game" ?
That's how it's very easy to dismiss something as a rumor.
Now, based on what you posted, my assumption is : GW isn't doing a WWII game - FW is. Very big difference. FW will put out a rules set. It will be available from FW only, similar to all the IA books and WAB. (They just announced WAB 2nd edition won't be sold outside of FW. My shops are dumping WAB on ebay, since I won't be allowed to sell the core book anymore.) You'll be able to get the game from FW, it won't be in GW stores, or independent retailers. You won't see support or miniatures for it from GW. GW is not going to push a book that makes you go by miniatures from another company. That's not competing with FOW, that's supporting it.) I'm sure John-Paul will laugh all the way to the bank if FW puts out a book that helps him sell more 15mm miniatures.)

American soldiers in WW2 = guard. German soldiers in WW2 = guard. Russian soldiers in WW2 = guard. And I think the same goes for french, british, japan, and more
men + tanks + big guns + some things that fly!
I do think a 40k sized WW2 game would be cool, especially if it would allow you to use tanks from other companies since there's so many great models out there already. But I don't like the idea of FW doing it with FW's prices and shipping and all that.

I swear there were Tyranids.
Sarcasm aside, it would be cool if they did, but wouldn't make sense as a company atm. Unless they do want to tap into another market of historical gamers.

From what I've heard, it is just a ruleset from FW, possibly some terrain too, but not models. Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and also, I heard it was just one person's personal project rather than any sort of FW-wide project.

That's about all I've heard about it too, Lego.
Which really doesn't surprise me considering the FW guys come from a background of doing scale armour kits and every so often Warwick's stuff crops up in Fine Scale Modeler. About 5 years back he had an absolutely gorgeously modeled Sherman Firefly that made their photo gallery.

If Steel Legion fights Valhalla, it is hard to see a difference to a Stalingrad battle.
Melissia is right that the feeling and look of IG vs. IG is very similar to a WW2 game. That's why so many people "theme" their IG armies around WW2 or modern armies.

Quoted from "The Defenestrator":
"Yes, I don't buy into the goody goody image the Tau PR machine has churned out . They're all dirty cold-blooded space-communists if you ask me! Besides, their shiny, selfless "we love everyone for the Greater Good" vibe is so unfitting for the "lulz we're all badass jerks" future of 40k. GW needs to play up their cold, calculating, "join us or die, and probably still die anyway" Borg-y style. That's just me of course."

It was still going strong in some areas. I'm hosting an "ancients day" next Saturday. A bunch of guys that play WAB, FOG, DBM, DBA, etc all wanted to get together and I volunteered my place. With all the new plastic armies coming out from Warlord, WGF, and other manufacturers, WAB had been picking up. Only thing holding it back was waiting for the new edition of the basic rulebook. Sadly, none of the stores supporting WAB can now sell the rules.
