CHECK THIS OUT........

I found this on a local shop's website......the recently had a painting competition and these were the 4 models entered. I do not have one entered and was kinda shocked by the results from just looking at the pics....

http://www.nerdvanastore.com/paint.html

How would you have voted?

Confused a bit, were these first time painters too? Or is the photography just terrible?

Not to sound too high'n mighty, but, I wouldn't have voted for any of them, I mean they are...well...badly painted, or just the photo is doing them no justice at all.

was the store's first painting competition and some of the painters were first timers I understand. I know the quality isn't too great but you can see the models well enough to tell......

Overall they seem bad, the website is not set-up very well, the pictures suck.. I hate to bag on anyone but a little more time spent on the website and finding a hobbyist that is good at photography shouldn't be hard. Also a full listing of rules would be cool. One of my "Local" shops has several age categories for their painting comps, and some of those young players paint way better than us oldies.. But knowing it was first timers between the ages of 8-12 helps a judge.

Painting competitions are really hard to get a true understanding on how they judge the figure.

In my experience, during the GW chapter painting competion last year 2009, there were only two really good entries at our store. I stayed at the store the whole 8 hours we were allowed to paint and my figure was very detailed down to it's lava basing. Not to toot my horn but I would say my figure was better than table top quality. I even sprayed a matte clear seal before I submitted it. The other well painted mini was a really detail painted mini. Both our minis had the same color scheme except he painted dragon scales on the leg armour. Well, he took first and I took third. Yes, third! The second placer was what everyone called the "rock marine". This was figure submitted by one of the guys I know. He started off painting a tiger stripe pattern but could not get the right effect he wanted. So, he got fed up and put PVA all over his figure and dropped it in his basing material and submitted it for judging. I told him to at least open up the eyes or give it a wash so he can say he painted it. Nope, he submitted it as is and took second place.

I wouldnt say they are all bad. Compared to what we see in white dwarfs and in GD comps, yea they look not so good. But for average players, Id say they look pretty close to what I see everywhere.

I personally would of picked #1. It was better looking by a long shot

Um those aren't very good. 4th place looks like a bunch of random blobs and second play is really blobby do. Like to much paint. I can't really tell what 1st place looks like and 2nd place has way to many colours going it looks like a rainbow and orks look terrible like that.

I would seriously guess that this was a contest for the ages of 8-12, beginner players/painters. although after having had all my figs in storage and not working on them for a year, my painting skills suffered a lot, so maybe not.

The paint seemed chalky and blobbed on. Hmm, not the best I've seen but certainly not the worst. We all start somewhere and looking back, some of my older models look like this.

Pictures online aren't always the best way to judge a paintjob. Particularly when the pics are as bad as those are.

Meanwhile, can we please steer away from just criticising the miniatures? The question asked was about which you would have voted for, not whether or not they were all potential golden demon winners.

So was it really necessary to post a thread as a vehicle for people to $h*t on other people's painting?

None of the people whose work is linked are asking for feedback from anyone here.

This thread is in bad taste imho...

I was just shocked at the results. I play at this store often. I was NOT posting this as a vehicle for anything, just curious if others felt the same way I did.....number 1 was the best model hands down but number three got the judges vote because the base was somewhat cooler......

The pics don't do the models justice...number 3 and number 1 were te front runners by far but number 1 should've won by a landslide... that waagh banner nob is awesome when you get a look at it in person. not blobby or sloppy and not too many colors....

thanks,

For the record I was being a web-design and photography snob.

Also I would have loved to see the models in person.

Its a rather small town- so it looks like a shop that jsut has a few players. Its between Memphis and Nashville, so the more competitive types will likely head to GW headquarters...

All I have to say is, all four of them look better than the throngs of bare, grey plastics that I continually see on tabletops. Forget about the multitudes of headless and/or armless models that litter gaming tables across the world.
Best of all, ALL FOUR of these models have been based with a scenic flair. Kick ass for them. All four or 'em.

You guys are pretty hard on first time painters.

I think the best of the lot is #3... the base is pretty cool, although I wouldn't have used a hairy head because the flow of the hair betrays the motion you're trying to imply.

I'd probably vote in this order but with these pic is hard to cast a vote/comment:

entry 1 (seems the best with some attempts at drybrushing / using washes)
entry 3 (base looks cool)
entry 2 (meh)
entry 4 (looks like its made of gummy bears glued together)

I dont think some of you are thinking of what age the people are who painted these.

There's no reference to age there so we can't really take that piece of information into account while judging.

Also I know people younger than me that paint way better and I also know people older than me that can't paint a miniature to save their lives. So age is not really that much of a factor, unless they are really, really young.
