Lone Wolf Sentinel Pilot

Hey,
For an 1,5k army list, I hope I can add some fast tanks so...
I was kinda wondering what your experiences were with the fast tanks.
1: Which tank do you prefer?
(Hellhound, devil dog or Bane wolf?)
2: What suits the idea of a gunline IG?
3: Worth it to add in a 1.5k list?
Thanks for helping me out.

1) Depends who you're facing. Hellhound will be good against orks, nids, hordes in general. Devil Dog is an AT tank, and Bane Wolf reduces all those fancy MEQ saves to 2+ poisoned.
2) Probably a HH, although a Bane Wolf might be good for zipping around plugging gaps in the line.

Hellhounds are nice because they can fire and maintain their distance.
Banewolves are super-dangerous to disembarked infantry, so they offer a priority target to keep the heat off of your other units.
Devil Dogs... well I've been trying them out and I'm not super-impressed so far, but I also haven't been fighting against their primary prey: mechanized armies.

I like Devildogs w/ Heavy Flamers. Nice, cheapish, and flexible. It's good for plugging a gap, or placing earlygame pressure on car parks.

I take a single hellhound in 1500 point game, as my gaming group is full of tyranids. it absolutely rapes. anything short of meq dies SO bad, automatic hit, 2+ to wound and pass armour save means if you get 12 hits, 10 models dead. now thats impressive. Hellhounds can get ultimate hits on large squads, and can burn around corners, AND if you shove on a multimelta on the hullmount, they are awesome for shots of opportunity. in a perfect world i would have 1 HH and one banewolf in the same squadron, both with multimeltas. they then pose a threat to both MEQ and anything below, whilst having enough multi melta weight of fire to pose a very decent threat to tanks. whats more, if you happen to have a penetrating hit scored on ur little squadron, you can allocate it to the tank that will perform worst for the task at hand. are you right infront of a space marine tac squad? kill the hellhound! are you facing off against a horde of orks, or some high priority lootas? kill the banewolf, keep the hound! do you need to instant death usarker creed, jarran kell and all the regimental advisers and orderlies? keep the hound. its very flexible, light on points (i compare everything to 5 man terminator squads pointswise) has excellent light infantry protection, and is fast! and the added bonus is the chem cannon on the BW is a defensive weapon! move and fire yes please! and can someone please tell me what devil dogs are good at? multimeltas have a better chance of hitting and exactly the same stats minus the small blast, therefore devil dogs must only be better at killing infantry than normal multimeltas? what am i missing here??? i would only ever employ one when killing a bunch of obliterators, for instant death pass armour goodness

I like to use 2 hellhounds in tandem. 1 with inferno cannon and the other melta cannon. They can really make your enemy squeamish when they start plowing towards his shiny elite troops and vehicles. If left intact by turn 2/3 they can inflict major damage on your enemies flank. And even if they get destroyed can fulfill a good role of drawing fire from the rest of your forces. Buying time for them to maneuver into more favorable positions and firing ranges.

@ Jaon: I would acctually prefer a Devil Dog with a Hull Mounted H. Flammer to your Hell Hound with a Hull Mounted Melta when hunting Mechanized units. The differance being the blast on the Melta hit, this way you're upping the area of effect on the stronger hit while still maintaining close to the same effect with the Heavy Flammer.
Basically this is for when you have MEQ's jumping out of thier truck after being moved. Shoot the truck with the Melta blast and some of the troops get caught in it, the effect on the truck is the same plus the troops who got caught and you still fire the Heavy Flammer at the truck catching who ever is in its path.

Ah, i cant say i agree with that. that would require you to move 12 to get within hull mounted heavy flamer range, meaning only being able to fire one weapon. sure, you'd pop the transport, but most meq squads have a tendancy to have some pretty bad close range AT at hand, and a heavy flamer is entirely inadequate at that task even if it can fire. So to fully utilize your situation, the enemies would have had to disembark less than 9" + 6" = 15" away (9 for range of flamer, 6 for range of move and fire all weapons) and not have killed your devil dog. What id prefer is to fire the multimelta at the transport and any already disembarked troops would be caught in the flames of the inferno cannon targetting the transport as well, if the troops hadnt disembarked, the tank would not be able to target them.
The added bonus of a Infernocannon is the ability to place the template anywhere, its a true killer for squads in a line or behind cover.

Thanks a lot for the advice, I really like the idea of hellhound and devildog behind eachother driving through the enemy.

The regular hellhound. It can do very unfortunate things to lots of models very easily.
The bane wolf has the disadvantage of not letting you twist the template sideways, and has a WAY shorter range, and the devil dog is just crap. Insignificantly better against just a couple target types in just a few situations, and pathetic against vehicles for its price.

None of them. Your opponent is coming to you, remember?

It depends on the list.
