They seem like a pretty good army, I was really thinking about starting Fantasy with them. I ended up deciding on High Elves instead.

Love Love Love the look and fluff, but just so terrible. I bought the battle force and an extra box of knights and use them in my Empire army.

I love the idea of the army. However I don't know the latest rules, I don't know how good or bad it is.

I'm not at all involved with Warhammer Fantasy, but I'm not really digging the look of the army from what I see on the GW site...

No real opinion. They're a fun army, look decent enough, but I sometimes feel like they're the realists in a fantasy game, the Empire has this almost cartoony fantastic feel to them, whereas Bretonnia has a very, "real" look about them. This is broken up with certain models (Pegasus Knights, Griffons, Grail Relaque, etc...) I think the models don't look "Warhammery" enough.

No opinion as I just started Fantasy. I both like and dislike how the units look. The mold themselves I like, but the individual color schemes bother me a bit for whatever reason. Pegasus knights are a neat idea though and the theme is nice.

I voted 'Nothing Special'. With Cavalry switching to a different role in 8th Edition and having one of the oldest Army Books in the game, Bretts are not what they used to be. I think that a skilled player will still take you to town with them.

I voted overpowered, because they look like it. I'm picking up fantasy with them after the starter set comes out.

They're overpowered against any army that doesn't have a ton of gigantic beasts or gunpowder.

For those of you who don't play Warhammer, their "base" units all have 2+ saves.

Really good idea (French peasants in warhammer!) but are just such a horrible army rules wise. The models resemble medieval French soldiers and peasant militia, which is great, but they are so underpowered. And especially now when we have armies of Daemons in plastic, they get ripped to pieces in seconds.

Problem is that their Knight units relied so much on the previous edition's "non-step up" rule, bash away the first rank and win combats. But I can see them still doing good. Just that their standard knights in Core will be less.

But who havn't needed to change up their army during 8th?

Their initiative is a big problem. Even with the charge they aren't going to do all that well if they are facing anything with decent strength. Their foot elements are really bad, but at least they don't auto lose against fear and terror causing units.

Honestly I don't really like the current books fluff. Fantasy Anglo French medieval army, I like. Grimy peasants and heavy handed social commentary, I could do without. I want GW to call their peasant levies peasant levies, and not men at arms.

A real man at arms was a professional soldier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man-at-arms. Men at arms would be better stated as dismounted knights, so a heavy armor shield guy with some hand weapons, flails, or morning stars would be better. Still have the peasant levies, but call them that instead.

Used to be a big fan of Arthurian legends and love the Grail stories so they were a consideration for me.

Would at some far flung distant affluent future still collect them even if not competative.

Notabot, I'm not an expert in mediaeval warfare but that sounds right.

They're my only Fantasy army, but the fact that the codex hasn't been updated in so long, almost 8 years now, leaves them completely uncompetative unless you "cheese" your build. It's really the only way to be competative right now.

And I totally agree with the poster above that said he didn't like the grimy dirty peasant thing. In earlier editions, they were regal knights protecting their citizenry, and the peasants voluntered to be Men at Arms, indicating a professional force. The fiction took a wild swing though, and made the peasants be abused, inbred, mutated half-human things that the Knights basically "kept" like cattle on their lands. It neither makes sense, nor is fun to play. Hell, the way the fiction describes them now, even as a Bretonnia player, I want to see them get wiped off the board. lol

Pretty much what I expected. Makes me kinda sad. I like 'em. I think they are one of the best balanced and fun armies that GW ever made. (Probably why they haven't been updated in a while) but they suffer from the lack of balance every where else in the game. (Does that even make sense to anyone besides me). I think Cryonicleech called it when he said they are the 'realists' of WHFB. Oh well, it's not like I'm going to toss them out the window, so maybe I'll break them out after the new army book, or maybe I'll leave 'em in storage. Thanks for all the responses!

Hi DakkaDakka,
I really like the Arthurian and Hundred Years War designs and fluff for the story. I always thought Empire was a bit too Renaissance for classical fantasy, but with Bretonnia we can have both kinds of human cultures in the story.

Only...GW, bring back Repanse!

I love Bretonnians and have 2500 pts of Brets but it's mostly a knight army. With the new rules I can't see them being as effective as they used to be untill they get a new book. I am however very interested in fielding a peasent/men-at-arms army as they are both pretty cheap units so the horde rule can be put into effect. Bowmen up fron shooting and taking charges with their defensive stakes, men-at-arms and Grail reliquae in the middle led by a Lord on foot, a BSB on foot and a couple damsels of the lady, Trebuchets in the back firing away, a couple units of knights to protect flanks. I think it would do pretty well

Have only played a few games of 8th, but strangely have watched quite a few games lately with Brets.

Seems like they got really hurt by the new ruleset and are in need of a new book to bring them into the present.

As already mentioned, their charges are significantly blunted by initiative fighting, enemy step up attacks, lots of magic that bypasses their armor advantage (Metal, I checks, S checks, reducing T, etc.).

Very cool models, though, and I like a lot of their current fluff/feel.

Fluff wise they are pure awesome sauce. I really, really dig the Pegasus Knights and the Damsels, both of which really scream "High Fantasy Heroes" to me. They are totally the next army I'm going to build, mostly so I have a loaner army for my friends (my other armies are Beastmen, Chaos Warriors, Daemons, and Dark Elves -- I need some good guys!). Ruleswise they seem to suck on the reading of them, but I haven't actually played them yet.

Already I think the rule forbidding Characters mounted on Royal Pegasus from joining units of Pegasus Knights it stupid beyond belief. I hate that rule so much I'm building my army -- which is a Parravon themed army (Parravon is the duchy from which most Pegasi come from) -- in total disregard to it, and will simply beg other players to waive the rule in the name of good fluff.

Duke Cassayon of Parravon, whose heraldy is the or pegasus rampant on a sable field, should totally be able to fly into battle with a half dozen pegasus knights following his charge, his battle standard bearer and a damsel at his side.

They really do need some more unit types though. Basically you have Men-At-Arms, Bowmen, and then 18 varieties of Dude On Horse With Increasingly Ornate Armor. They need some knights on foot, peasant skirmishers, battle priestesses, siege engines, I don't know. Something to give them a bit more variety.

Peasent Bowmen can become skirmishers, if they had a battle priestess they would be to much like the Empire with the sisters of Sigmar and they do have a siege engine. it's called a Trebuchet but I do agree that more is needed, infantry knights would be cool.

On the topic of the Trebuchet I know that Stone Throwers have become S3(9) now but does the Trebuchet stay S5(10) since it says that's what it's strength is in the book? I mean if it said it was a normal Stone Thrower then I'd know. If it is still S5(10) I see it being the best Stone Thrower in the game besides maybe the Hell cannon.

I had totally forgotten that the Peasent Bowman could be skirmishers. Doh!

As for siege engines, I meant MORE siege engines obviously. The trebuchet is nice, but a ballista and trebuchet would be nicer. And I'd like to see an actual siege tower/battering ram.

Yeah but unless your playing a special scenario (like the on in WD a few years ago about Bretonnians and Wood Elves defending a castle against a huge Dark Elf force) siege towers and battering rams aren't going to be that usefull ya know?

Ballista would be cool, I think they should have a champion of the King.

I really like the look of them and most of the models are solid. Plus I much prefer low model count armies so I'd way rather do Bret than Empire if I were to do a human army.

Mainly what's keeping me back is I don't think I could do them justice painting-wise.
