We have a lot of smart and talented people here...maybe it's time we start giving them some (good) submissions.

Sadly that can't happen. Tammy Hayes (former 'Eavy Metal painter and now ex-employee) is on record as saying that by policy articles are only allowed to be written by Studio Staff nowadays. 'Eavy Metal artists, other staff, and certainly external third parties are FORBIDDEN from writing for the Dwarf.
  I know for a fact that statement can't be correct unless it was a very recent descision, because I have some friends who had their article on drop pod tactics put in the Dwarf. Also, Xtapl had an extremely good article on Dark Eldar published there.
  When was this policy supposed to have been initiated?

Uh, considering that Xtapl's DE article was in WD 309 (a year ago) and, as far as I can tell, the drop pod tactics apparently appeared some time before that (well over a year ago). Doesn't sound like such a policy would have had to be initiated very recently at all...

Hello long time reader, first time poster.  Did anyone pick up Fanatic Magazine?  It was everything White Dwarf should be, the sad thing was it was only about the (cool) specialist games.  It was a bit smaller and a little bit more expensive, but you got rules, bat reps, panting.

  The run down of a random issue (#4) that I grabbed was...

<!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->

<!--[if !supportLists]-->

New cover art work

Editorial

3 pages of new stuff

a page telling the reader how to submit articles! They wanted player help!?

8 pages telling players how to ally Warmaster armies (with rules)

4 pages of gothic Eldar fluff with rules for their new ship and fleet.

6 pages of Necromunda Nightfighting rules with new wargear, and 2 scenarios

10 pages of a new epic army (Baran Siegemasters Imperial Guard) complete with fluff and rules

8 pages of detailed instructions showing the reader how to build epic fortifications

2 pages of letters

4 pages telling players what J.J is <strong style="">thinking of changing[/b] in the mordheim rules

8 pages of Gothic tactics, with individual ships broken down.

Ask lord borak letter page (useless, but funny)

2 pages of bloodbowl fluff

6 more pages of necromunda rules for treacherous conditions.

4 pages of Mordheim fuff followed by 2 new sanarios.

Alternative rules for playing bloodbowl in a street.

15 page inquisitor battle report written in story format (its inquisitor so the story format makes sense.)

2 pages telling you that “you want to play nurgle in warmaster)

3 pages of ads

8 pages of current epic errata. (when the new version was only released a few months prior.)

1 page about modeling in general

back cover is a reference sheet for the new epic army list.

112 pages of content!

The staff at specialist games is still putting out better quality stuff than their parent co.  What gives?  Why can’t big GW listen to little GW?  They were putting out this quality publication less than a year ago.

The drop pod tactics are in White Dwarf 316 for May 2006, bro.  That makes it quite a bit less than well over a year ago.

Ahah, quite right. I missed that while looking through Gee-Dub's clunky back issue content summaries, since I've long since stopped buying the rag. Regardless, IIRC, White Dwarf has a 3 month lead time from when the magazine is finalized to when it's in our grubby palms the month of it's release (with only very, very rare exceptions being made). Though I'm curious to know if there were any such fan-written articles in any of the 4 issues since.

My buds were approached by GW to do the article, as well as a couple others after that in conjunction with some in house writers.
One of them would still be doing submitions, but real life intruded with it's own demands so he's pretty much out of the loop for a while.
I know they were asked after that pod article to do a battle report with a 6 dread army vs. a zilla 'nid force.

Hell, I'll play that one against myself...

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

No more outside articles? Something must have changed recently, since I remember Tom "Commander Y" (at Bolter and Chainsword) Schadle writing a nice article on painting and technique after he won the Slayer Sword in LA a bit ago... Not this last LAGD, but the one before...

I guess that would be more than a year ago now.

Some of my favorite articles were (bear with me here) the ones written by the British fellow who plays Fantasy, and he wrote about his gaming club and things he noticed about the game, with plenty of little asterisk'ed asides and notes. Very funny to read and made the game personal.

Ahh yes, It is Mike Walker I believe you speak of.  Those were always my favorite articles as well.  I loved hearing about the intricacies of the game as seen by him and his gaming group.  In fact it was for mostly that reason that I started playing fantasy many moons ago.

Well.  Given GW's attitude to rules, the fact that they broke it doesn't mean it never existed in the first place.  They'll always find an exception some how!  Maybe they were using and old copy of the Codex White Dwarf Submission Rules when they accepted the Drop Pod article....

Well, I was quoting from (probably dodgy) memory Tammy Haye, who'd know more than I would. She was making the comment (can't find the quote now) explaining why the old style Masterclasses would never reappear.

Tammy has been gone for some time now.. and Jeff Leong is a local gamer here.. His articles were awesome.   When did Tammy make this comment. AS of July 5th (my last day with GW as they terminated the part time position) they were asking for articles in the US.. in fact a local friend was doing some conversion work for some conversion articles ..

as for masterclasses and painting, it would be nice to get some step by step from the studio, but we get those in black gobbo now, so with everyone crying no repition, it's a moot point..

either that or you are honestly just being a tad bit overpessimistic?  they do accept articles, but with the lack of proper "motivational goodies" given in return the average gamer doesn't want to do it anymore..  think of it this way..   if you received merchandise in trade for your article and later were asked to do the article with no compensation, the average guy is less likely to do it.. even with the bragging rights of being in white dwarf.. and with the current dakka dakka readership of that mag going down, the bragging rights wouls be sorely lacking .. ergo..  no articles submitted, no articles published.

I miss new rules and army lists. I also miss the old style Eavy Metal, where instead of showcasing a Army or new release, they showcased a painter and had a dozen or more of his paint jobs, regardless of if they where the newest figure. Granted this was in the earily 100s (issue numbers) and they didn't have old figures (not really), but would love to see more stuff like this. Battle reps are great too.

So I want
* New Rules
* Old Style Eavy Metal
* Battle Reports
