Oh, I seriously would have bought a subscription if he gave me a reason to buy it. Seriously, I am not kidding.

He just couldnt find it in his own concsious to lie to me all the way to hell and back and I really respect that. To be honest, even though I didnt buy the subscription, I have a new found respect for gw, or the person who took the call at the very least. I am glad to see some feewill when it comes to salesman ship. I Cant sell people things like automatic electrical cat toys when I know full well all you need is some catnip and something that makes a crinkling noise when you squish it. Catnip sells itsel and thorough knowledge of the product helps, especially when your enthusiastic about the results. Whitedwarf cannot sell itself even with the help of a troll. No matter how enthusiastic e may seem, there just plainly isnt a good enough reason to subscribe.

Now add some killteam articles, some necromunda/battlefleet gothic stuff, and I am on it like white on rice, or malfred on jester.

Here's some comparable hobby/specialist magazines and their subscription prices:

White Dwarf (GW): $6.60 ea (Cost on subscription: $5 ~ 24.4% savings ): Full colour

No Quarter (Privateer): $5.95 (Subscription N/A - Short print): Full colour

Dragon Magazine (WOTC): $5.99 (Subscription: $3.33 ~ 44.5% savings): Full colour

Fine Scale Modeller: $5.50 (Cost on subscription: $3.95 ~ 28% savings) - Full colour

Hobby Japan: $10.00 (Subscription N/A - Import) - Contains: In-depth scratch build projects, dioramas, military modelling, hobby show reviews. Full colour glossy/newsprint hybrid magazine - roughly twice the thickness of White Dwarf.

Newtype: $10.00 ($8.09 - Online for ~20% savings) - Contains: Anime reviews, manga content, glossy/newsprint hybrid magazine. Price includes monthly Posters, DVD and/or Toy giveaway. Oversize format.

So... as far as I can tell, from a pure pricing standpoint, and subscription pricing standpoint, White Dwarf isn't really out of line. However, when content is compared against the other listed magazines, White Dwarf is uh... kind of hurt by its tunnel vision like focus. I've seen people compare White Dwarf to Newtype as a specialty mag, but Newtype has loads of giveaways every month and regular features such as monthly exclusive comics, which White Dwarf can not match. If it was priced similar to say, Dragon Magazine, nobody would have any complaints.
By pricing yes, but when you take content into consideration, wd dont stand a chance in comparison. Even Dragon and newtype are both catalogue type rags, but they still give very insightful reviews for fans. I am a GW fan, and I dont see the point in subscribing when I can simply read dakka, warseer, bolter and chainsword, dysartes, etc , for a fraction of the cost or for almost free (after paying the net bill).

The hobbyists that frequent these boards make me glad I havent completely forsaken GW, as sometimes I literally get chills reading some modelling or tacticsarticles that very intelligent people post for the good of the community, and they make sure they accurately posrtray to the best of their ability what the subject and we can interactwith it.

GW is the complete opposite in every way.

Did you ever call back to find out about no purchase necessary?

No,but I called Cort jensen (Consumer protection attorney for the state of montana, and is a gamer as well) and tipped him off to see whats up with that. He said his first reaction is that is not legal, but he said he would have to look into it to see if they use some *insert legal jargon here that hellfury doesnt understand* loophole to avoid the caveat of purchase exemption. Just let the bulldogs do the work.

or I guess I could call, but I like how Cort works. He loves exposing fraud and illegal activities in business practices. Listening to his stories really makes you want to work at his office.

Let us know how that lawyering goes. If I can win all of the battleforces without subscribing to WD I will. That's a deal that seems resonable to me.

And if they have roofs in hell, look out!
And if they do, they'll certainly be on fire.  So that's twice the reason to watch out.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Less blood, more orgy.

Either way, you're still going to be dealing with a lot of atomic ferns. Which are still better than a WD sub.
