Rambo (all of em) He wipes out whole armies all by himself. Seen the preview for the new one coming out and he's like 60 in the movie and still whoopin butt.
Saving Private Ryan is my choice for 'best for depicting how horrible war is and why politicians shouldn't send 20 years to it.' But, I can only watch it every few years.
Kelly's Heroes is my choice for 'most entertaining and a movie that I can watch over and over and enjoy.'
Dr. Strangelove needs to get some love. I guess it really isn't a war as much as the end of the world though. "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here - this is the war room!"

I thought The Thin Red Line was pretty tremendous.
Starship Troopers made me want to stab myself in the face bone.

Ill have to agree on 300 same with Rambo.
We were soldiers was pretty well done. Also it wasnt a movie but band of brothers as well
This is silly! Buttons are not how one escapes dungeons! I would smash the button and rain beatings liberally down on the wizard for playing such a trick!
It's not my favorite, but I'm not sure if anybody has mentioned Enemy at the Gates. While the second half is sort of meh, the first act shows an incredibly terrifying view of war.
It was only a TV movie, with ricky schroeder, but The Lost Battalion is a great WWI movie based on actual events. It's one of my favorites, and it's a shame that more people haven't seen it.
My personal favorite might have to Gettysburg. It's a great movie, well done, with some of the last great Non-CGI battle scenes of our time. After visiting the Battlefield itself, the movie only gets better.
I'd also posit Glory in top 5 pre-modern wary movies, and goes well with Gettysberg.

Pearl Harbor: Ruined by a love story
On the one hand you can have Tora, Tora, Tora with their magnificent 1-1 set of the Nagato forecastle and on the other you have the CG power of the Disney lame duck, which one you´ll go to see?. I cant say enough on this and and piece of crap. I´m a WWII navy buff and I was so excited with the coming movie that my father bought me a bootleg copy from NY months in advance of the opening in Europe, in restrospective I´m glad he did as I did not waste my money going to the theater.
As some critics said at the time....
"a two-hour movie squeezed into three hours, about how on December 7, 1941, the Japanese staged a surprise attack on an American love triangle,"
And I´m not going to rant more because if I start on the movie Hell will freeze over before I finish scalping this chaos spwam.

"Starship Troopers" and "great movie" mentioned in the same post?!?
The end times, they are near.
It's a fun movie, yes, but not a great one by any stretch of the imagination.
My favorites:
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Black Hawk Down
The Patriot
Enemy at the Gates
The Memphis Belle
A Bridge too Far
The Great Escape
The Dirty Dozen
The greatest though?
Band of Brothers
While not actually a movie, it's made of enough win to easily beat any combination of the rest in any Lesbian Turkish Oil Wrestling match you can set up.
And twice on Sundays.

After watching SST my brother once commented that Hollywood got the rights from the novel to avoid being sued by GW because the true title of the movie must be IG chronicles.

I see you are familiar with The Hater.
Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
It is a Soviet film from 1969 called Освобождение (transliterated as "Osvobozhdenie" translated as "Liberation")
Hard as hell to find and long as hell to watch (what russian movie isnt though?) clocking in at nearly 7 1/2 hours long.
Here is a You tube clip excerpt for the Battle of Kurskaya:
Sadly, it is completely in Russian and no subtitles available.
It doesn't matter though, as I speak Russian and can tell you its a piece of soviet propaganda about communisms complete and utter triumph over fascism told in way that would make Stalin blush from such dramatic embellishments. The music is quite russian and very bad. If you can find the version with german music, it is a much better watch (though still no subtitles)
Real IL-2's, real Stuka's, real Tiger I's, real T-34's....en masse! Not to mention real locations.
Its is seriously and without a doubt, the best war movie evah made. This thread may now be closed due to the finality of my statement...
Apocalypse Now is head and shoulders above the rest.
FMJ is also quite good.
Saving Private Ryan is a piece of drek. I can't even see Adam Goldberg in other movies now without seeing that weird scene with the Handsome German homoerotically stabbing him. Between that and the decision to cast Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom, you have to think Speilberg has some real "issues."
