Agree. This is why it is desirable to have a tradeoff between movement all-out (Run / Cruising speed & Flat Out), shooting all-out (Heavy & RF long / static), and doing a bit of both (Assault & RF double / Combat Speed).

Its like the chess argument about game design. Imagine a hypothetical chess that is played with half the number of pawns as the game we know. In that case, the queen is overpowered. The obvious choice is to remove the queen. That removes variety and options from the game at no real gain in simplification.....a better choice is to double the number of pawns.

And this is precisely what GW is doing: the Queen is HQ/Heavy and Pawns are Troops.

I agree about the tanks moving and shooting. Obviously fluff wise they do, but game wise they dont. Maybe they would become overpowered if they could move and shoot everything like in the fluff.

Is it really overpowered that a Predator Destructor can move and fire it's Autocannon and Heavy Bolters? I haven't really noticed that being a problem at all in my games.

This thread reminds me of a rant I once went on about a year ago to my friends. It went something along the lines of "If I have the ability to make a microwave gun or harness the power of plasma in a rifle form why the F would I run across the battlefield with a staple gun and a letter opener to fight a 12' tall effin demon!?!". My friends thought it was funny, but I was being quite serious.

Anyways, it is more than possible to add a touch of realism (it would seem more like common sense in this case, but we'll give em the benefit of the doubt) to 40k without making it "too complicated". Seriously, people were playing Rogue Trader and 2nd edition just fine and there were a ton of rules. Don't get me wrong, I like that we don't have to have all kinds of cards and counters and markers all over the table now, but that doesn't mean we need to go in the complete opposite direction.

Or how about WHFB? I know some of you hate fantasy, but those rules have tons of depth to them without being crazy overboard and I hear fantasy players saying that this is the ruleset that finally got it right. Granted it took them 25 years to do it, but damn, it doesn't mean GW can't cut and paste a little complexity over to 40k.

It would seem I got a little off the OPs topic. Tanks SHOULD be able to move and fire all their weapons at different targets. Something to the effect of: Stationary gets to fire all weapons at different targets for full effectiveness. Moving half means you get to fire main weapon at full effectiveness and other weapons at -1 BS all at different targets. Full movement means all shots take -1 BS but still can fire at different targets. Is that so difficult?

Well, a Tau Hammerhead Gunship may not have the most weapons, but take the upgrades Multi-Tracker and Target lock and you can fire and move as a fast machine and acquire different targets.
of course, with a maximum of 3 weapon systems, not the best tank...
Yet a Multi-tracker and a target lock would be useful on a Land Raider or Leman Russ
