Do any of your local churches have religious advertising outside?

I see it in some places in London. I see it on the Tube (underground) as well.

In my neighborhood, there are so many frakkin' churches that they don't need to adertise, except for the whackos who come around sticking pamplets in peoples' doors. I went around behind them one day, taking the pamphlets where I could and throwing them away. I told them I was doing it to. It seemed to make them want to stay away from me, because they haven't come to my home for the last five years.

I thought *I* liked to start fires. If you don't want them to come to your home, why don't you just put up a no solicitation sign and ask them to not come there again? Does your neighborhood have a no solicitation policy? If so, you may have justification for what you did, but otherwise, I think that was completely uncalled for. What gives you cause to believe that you are the arbitriter for what other people should be exposed to? Would you be so opposed if they were soliciting for something that you believed in? You might be an idealist, but I'd bet at very least you wouldn't be coming on the boards to kvetch about it.

There are many churches, some evangelical, within a walking distance of where I live, and I've yet to have a solicitor ( Well, for religion, though I have had your usual magazine sellers). Where I lived previously I may have gotten two or three in a year, all of whom were polite. In all cases, a simple, no thank you, sufficed. At no point did I feel a need to follow these people around, wasting my valuable time, tearing up pamphlets. I don't know the situation where you live, there may be a lot more solicitors, but I seriously doubt that what you did was the ideal solution to the problem.

There are a few church billboard advertisements though they tend to fall into one of two categories: the church that is fun and totally cool with everyone or they are bilingual and have Spanish services.

There are so many things wrong with this, I won't go into it. I'll only suggest that if discussing one religion over any other isn't okay. Then discussing any religion isn't okay.

I think you just answered your statement typeline. Outright attacks on any religion, depending on the posting, may rise to trolling. Hence my friendly word. Should you have an issue with that remember, this is indeed a message board about toy soldiers and related non-electronic / electronic gaming.

OT has generally and graciously been allowed more leeway. However, even here the Dakka rules apply

Rule 1: Be Polite
This seems obvious, however many folks can sometimes forget that common courtesy goes a long way to lending respect to both you and your opinions. Just because you don't see the other readers' faces doesn't mean they don't have feelings and won't be hurt by rude comments. When you read something that you find silly, rude or insulting first assume that perhaps there is more to the post than you initially thought. Re-read it keeping in mind that tone and inflection is difficult to convey in written form. It may be that the person is attempting a joke or is exaggerating on purpose. It is best to politely request clarification before accusing someone being ignorant, a liar, or worse.

If after clarification you still disagree with the person then politely outline your points. Try to avoid name-calling or even implying insults wherever possible. These tactics generally only inflame a situation and lead to what are known as "Flame Wars." Whenever a flame war starts it usually ruins a perfectly good discussion. Others will lose interest in the thread and the discussion board in general if this kind of interchange is found here.

It also should go without saying that swearing, profanity, sexual references, etc. are strictly forbidden. Remember that we have readers of all ages.

Argument on the merits and staying away from flaming looks to be ok. (note this thread has not been closed as an example). I'll note both Ragnar and I regulary post here and are both MODs. We both have very different views (online, I'd bet good money we're a lot closer in real life) and clash. But since being MOD I can only think of two or three threads that have been closed. So its pretty open here. Just remember where you are and that there are a wide variety of different people on this board, not just the relative number inhabiting OT.
