FWIW, the list I'm painting up:

Librarian (The Avenger, The Gate of Infinity) 100
10x Assault Marines (1x Meltabombs, PFist) 220
10x Sternguard (8x Combi-Melta) 290
Drop Pod (Deathwind, Locator Beacon) 65
10x Sternguard (8x Combi-Melta) 290
Drop Pod (Deathwind, Locator Beacon) 65
5x Assault Terminators (3x Lightning Claws, 2x Thunder Hammer) 200
10x Tacticals (Power Fist, Plasma Gun, Lascannon) 215
Drop Pod (Locator Beacon) 45
10x Tacticals (Power Fist, Plasma Gun, Lascannon) 215
Drop Pod (Locator Beacon) 45

The Fists in the Tactical squads might be a poor choice of points.

The idea is that the whole list can sit in reserve, and the Terminators and Assault Marines can Deepstrike on any of the Locator Beacons as needed.

It's a pretty obvious list, a toned down version of the one Stelek posted a while back.

SG should be taken for what they are: A points intensive, mobile, high lethality 10 wound T4 3+ unit that has the unique ability to kill/severely maul any other unit in game. No more, no less The way you choose to employ them will dictate the required level of survivability.

They should be supporting your heavy attack units - Dropping preds, termies running down assault ramps and assault marines. Either killing threats pre-emptively or engaging units threatening your committed heavies.

Dont be afraid to let them die in place, just make sure the loss of a large amount of your limited combat power had a proportionate effect on the battle. Making the points back isnt what its about, if you strand his termies in the middle of no where or destroy the center of his gunline and exploit (forcing him to redeploy), it was a good trade.

As far as keeping them alive if they have been given a return ticket goes. I always take a lib, the importance of mobility just cant be stressed enough (both offensively & defensively). Dont automatically combat squad as they come out of the pod, you need bodies to retain combat power after they take casualties, be that from enemy action or gate mishaps and to protect the lib in CC. I always take fists, they are not a defensive tool as such, more of a deterrent and means of not being locked in CC indefinitely. - Im on the no gating out of CC side of the fence fwiw. Moral high ground and all.. yes im a better person/player for not relying on poor GW rule explanations hah!

Being a fresh faced new user, take anything i say with a large helping of salt.

Ct.

I was looking at running 10 man Sternguard with a drop pod and Librarian and using them to eliminate any threat to a Redeemer loaded with Thunder Hammer Terminators and Vulcan.

Does Vulcan let you count your combi-melta shots as twin linked? I would assume so, but it just occurred to me that it may not.

Plasma is both highly unstable and highly fun.
