That is really great work!!! I have one comment - to make it look real I would include some weathering over the artwork to look as if it wasn't just painted on. If you want the just painted on look then I would have some area around the art clean of the weathering to look as it the area was just cleaned for painting.
Just thoughts on work that is already looking great!

Freehand for dummies huh? Where's the tut for "people who have club feet for hands"? :-P Good work. I wish I was within an order of magnitude of your skill.

Awesome tutorial! Unfortunately my hand is shaky and can't get small details or stay "inside the lines" too easily. That's why I love painting orks and SM.

"Not to offend anyone - but am I the only one who finds renaissance-ish type paintings on a tank to be a little silly and out of character for the 40k universe?
I could maybe see the Sisters of Battle doing something like that... but Space Marines strike me as too "War and prepare for War" to care about art.

Space marines are not mere warriors, they are monks and scholars too. Often being masters of various arts and sciences as well as with weaponry.

I agree schmapi. While I cant do 2d art like this I am an above average 3d painter and I am not a fan of this type of art on the models. Please dont take this the wrong way as like I said I can not do 2d art like that, but the overall quality of the paint job on the rest of the tank seems to be lacking.

Note: Must actually be a good artist before hand. Failing that, get someone else to do it.
Yeah freehanding isn;t so much a skill that can be taught in a simple tutorial like this. It's a delicate process thats far beyond a 10 step program. You need some basic idea of artistic composition, and in artworks such as this, human anatomy is a must.
It's an awesome tank, by no strech of the imagination am I denying the skill that you have for this, or that yes, this tut does have a methodic structure indicitive of making this process easier, but as I've been siting, one must first have some skill in freehand painting. This tutorial will not help you there...

@ Warhammertabletop; I use a normal number 2 pencil man. The problem may be one of two things. Is the primer completely cured? Give it a day or two before trying to draw on the surface. Also you don't have to push very hard so don't apply too much pressure. Something else it could be is (I don't know how to describe this) there is different brands/kinds of number 2 pencil even though they're both rated at a grade 2. I use the wooden ones with the more "grainy" lead inside. The kind that is really "smooth" and the wood around the lead is kind of "spongy" will not work as well. Best of luck.
@ Lormax; I can't wait to see jesus with a lasgun on a baneblade!

This tutorial (or the WIP thread) was what got me signed up to Dakka.
I've had a go on my CSM Rhino top hatch... It is kind of ok from a distance, but I think I will have to strip it and start again I think.
Had a nice devil pupetmaster and puppet picture I was basing it on. I think much practice is required before I get anywhere close to your standard

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"
Is that followed by a pile-in move?
That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"
Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round? |

I can see what you mean but a lot of the Chapters are reputed to be phenomenal artist, notably the Blood Angels fluff places them as some of the greatest and most stylised artists in the galaxy.

Yes and some of these tanks are supposed to be thousands of years old and treated like holy relics. This sort of artistry is very in keeping with the sci-fi dark ages that makes up the background for 40k.

This. I sometimes think and chuckle about how many squeeky clean, fresh-off-the-lot Land Raiders you see. If it was a chimera, that's a different story (still churned out and wrecked by the thousands), but Land Raiders are venerable relics from long-dead eras of man's history; They're borderline sentient for cripes sake!
Besides, most 40k vehicles bigger than a Raider are basically flying/rolling/floating cathedrals; I doubt many of them lack majestic frescoes like this.
