Just buy the codex of armies your considering then play with them on vassel.
Thats what I did with the Demon codex, and i'm glad I did, as I really really dont think they are the army for me.

P.M. me for rational Eldar Advice, both on list construction or Tactics.
Also feel free to query me about rules from the Eldar and Space Marine codices, as well as the General Rule book.
Mech Eldar army of the Craftworld Din Cassian currently at 17-6-7.

I've pretty much done that already. Decided today on Guards. You need at least one squad of veterans.

Just one? Not a vendetta but a Valkyrie? You had better swap out the Hellstrike missiles for the multiple missile pod to make it an anti infantry Transport that can move 12" and shoot everything, otherwise its not so great (12" and shoot either a multilaser or a single shot S8 AP2 ordnance)
But even then that puts it at the same point cost as a vendetta, so you should just take the vendetta and let Russes handle hordes.

Sorry, I meant Valk/Ven. Its more about the $70 Can cost to buy multiple that inhibits me. I figured it would be better to buy 1 Valk/Ven + 2 russes and 2 transports, than 3 Valks and 1 transport.

Well dont forget Valks can carry 12 models (except ogryns) so you can use those as your transports if you feel like it. They arent dedicated transports like Chimeras, but you can start the game with guys in em.
All things considered they're better transports since you can move 24" and deepstrike the guys inside out if need be.
Just a thought.
But yes, for the cost of a valk/vendetta you can almost buy 2 chimeras.

I have yet to play any games with my valks but on paper anyway it seems like a Valkyrie with rocket pods is the best way to go. Like, if you have a Vendetta with all lascannons, you can't shoot them all if you move too much, but the rocket pods will count as defensive weapons so you can, say, shoot both rocket pods plus a multi laser at a unit and you'll tear it up real good.
Also the heavy bolter door gunners seem like a cool idea but those won't count as defensive weapons so they'll have the same problem as the vendetta guns. I wish they would have let you do heavy stubbers or heavy bolters in the doors.
You could probably do a couple of units in chimeras and then something special in the valkyrie that you want to get across the board fast, maybe some meltagun vets that you can fly in and drop behind a tank

A valk with rocket pods is best for mobility, but I use Vendettas because I run across Nid MCs with 2+ saves a lot. Plus they can be anti armor, anti termi, or anti MC in addition to just killing random stuff.
Still I see where you're coming from. Typically I run 2 vendettas and 1 valk with missile pods

Wouldn't I end up paying roughly the same once shipping was factored in? I might save 20 bucks, but have to wait like a week or two?

Ooh, stormtroopers. Thats a tough call really. I havent used any ever, mainly due to budget restraints, but with their new loadout of S3 AP3 18" Rapid Fire guns, they are limited in use.
I always imagined that if I ran them, theyd be the infiltrating type that have pinning shots for their first shooting.
But I digress, they're an expensive unit that isnt really necessary. I'd suggest buying pop together guys or heavy weapons teams instead.
Looking at your buy list, you'll have to run the 2 squads in the battleforce as veterans to actually play (2 Troops). But thats not so bad, as they can shoot better.
As for buying from online retailers, Maelstrom has free shipping, but yes you'll be waiting a week or so for the figs to arrive. TheWarStore.com does a fair job of getting them to you in 3 days or so, and they offer 20% discount on just about everything. I'd check them out.
Keep posting anymore questions you have.
Oh, and I think Luna has IG stuff shes willing to sell, but you'll have to ask her.

K, say if shipping is around $25 .
You order $380 , at 30% off thats only $266 + $25 shipping , total of : $291 instead of $380. $89 saved.
But if you order from maelstrom , they give free shipping , just pray to not bump into canadian customs.
They bit off a large chunk of my money last international shipment.

As for buying used models, assembling them from scratch is my favorite part, so thats out of the question
What would you suggest to take their place then for $50-60?

Like 25% savings for a mech SM army.
Thanks guys for the online suggestion. Found a place in BC that would save me roughly $100 Can (30% off everything). Takes 2-3 weeks to ship though, and higher shipping cost than any other site ($15 + 3% of order), but I guess I don't have to worry about it getting jacked up at the border.

I'm buying a new guard army as well: check out ebay for a deal every once in a while... I have a retailer that sells 20% off retail price with free shipping... unfortunately US residents only... but I love it its like having a local game store even though I don't. What part of canada? maybe I can sneak across the alaska/canada border for a game.

Hmm, an Air Calv/Armored Company mix would be completely different from what you are used to. Let me write up a list, and I'll even see if I can fit in Storm Troopers (because they might work here...). Company Command Squad, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 105 Veterans, 2 Grenade Launchers, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 155 Veterans, 3 Meltaguns, Demolitions, 130 Veterans, 3 Meltaguns, Demolitions, 130 Valkyrie Assault Carrier, 100 Valkyrie Assault Carrier, 100 Leman Russ Battle Tank, hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 150 Leman Russ Battle Tank, hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 150 1000 This was a bit of a squize for a 1k list, but man does it pack a punch. 2 Chimeras, 2 LRBTs, 2 Valks and 3 Vet squads. The Valks each take one of the Demo Vet squads, and they are your dedicated anti-tank (and they're damn good at it too). Valks provide fire support and a distraction for the Leman Russes (who are your dedicated anti-infantry). The other Vet squad claims the objective or gives some fire support while the CCS tries to get to a good spot to order Bring it down! for the Vets. It'd be really awesome to use the Storm Trooper models for the 2 airborne vets. Just a heads up. By the way, this ( http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1080005&prodId=prod1400031) is where you get those Meltaguns.

Thats a pretty sweet list. I usually run 1500 now though.
My only concern with this is, wont I be missing out on capping power for objectives?

You should have plenty of time to pick up the Vets and put them on objectives. They aren't suicide units. There were actually somethings I wanted to do with that list at 1500, so give me a minute and I'll get back to you. Company Command Squad, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 105 Veterans, 2 Grenade Launchers, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 155 Veterans, 2 Grenade Launchers, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 155 Veterans, 2 Grenade Launchers, Chimera with hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 155 Veterans, 3 Meltaguns, Demolitions, 130 Veterans, 3 Meltaguns, Demolitions, 130 Valkyrie Assault Carrier, 100 Valkyrie Assault Carrier, 100 Leman Russ Battle Tank, hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 150 Leman Russ Battle Tank, hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 150 Leman Russ Eradicator, hullmounted Heavy Flamer, 160 1490 Right, you get a new tank to bust people out of cover (helping you clear objectives). I wanted to get the Valks upped to Vendettas, but honestly the Vets they carry pack so much of a punch it doesn't really matter. You also solve your infantry problem, as you start rubbing against your 6 troop slot max (after this, get an infantry Platoon so you basically free up another 5 slots). So, now you are up to 4 Chimeras, 3 Leman Russes and 2 Valks. You have to play around with the ground Vets weapons though, those Grenade Launchers are just fillers and you have 10 more points to spare. I am not sure how I'd fight this list at 1500, which is a good sign.
