And the book you're referring to is Sabbat Martyr, the end of The Saint cycle.

I can't remember who the author was but the books are good. Read 2 of them and love em'. Cain can be a really funny character sometimes, especiallywhen it delves into his thoughts.

Biggest problems with the GG books are that the characters are all soooo cuddly and invulnerable that the death of Bragg came as a punch to the gut followed by a miserable feeling, which was a good move. The other problem is that Abnett takes a theme (Normandy, Market Garden or Stalingrad) and thickly applies this to the story, to the point that it reads more like a thickly written 13-year-old fan story based off the source with the Germans replaced by chaos and the Garands replaced by lasguns. I generally stopped reading after Traitor General, I've got Armour of Contempt but put it down after the first three chapters, it was just too ugh for me.

As for Cain, they are written by Sandy Mitchell.

I feel drawn to the power of the Cain books now...

Some of the fights are bound to resemble historic events, just because there are so many of them. Should he have avoided writing about guardsmen fighting tanks because it happened in WW2? And drop landings because its similar to what happened at normandy?

Sure, Abnett's writing isn't perfect, but it's entertainment. Also, if he killed off all the characters at the same rate as is realistic there would be no-one left. Then people would complain that they liked the characters and didn't want them to die :S

No matter you do, there will always be SOMEONE who can complain about it.
