That may be true, but really? "In order to release new armies we have to get rid of old ones!"

Hell, why not get rid of Space Marines then, you'd free up a LOT of space, I swear.

Or how about just having fewer redundant kits out on the shelves. Why does a store need 3 tactical squads on the shelf, they can keep the other two in back, and then just pull them when people ask about it. It always struck me a good amount of front of the store space is wasted on redunancy like that.

because they're SPESE MAREINZ. It's some sort of sales plan, ever notice how most of the space for 40k is taken up by SM. Usually a lot of the same ones a few times. While other races have the normal one box, maybe two, with the rest in the back (just a guess, they could only have SM ). So when people come in they see stuff like Tau, Eldar, Necrons, DE, etc and then see the SM wall. For new players common sense would say that the new player would probably pick up the SM. Not that common sense would say that picking the SM army would be a good thing because of this. It's just lots of big colourful boxes seems to get the targeted audience properly.

But, I'm going to make a guess and say that the Hammerhead and Devilfish kits are redundant

Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

I have to reiterate that this wasn't an interview I had but a fragmented conversation held over the middle of a tournament game that he was watching me play, and I was only half listening.

I thought I disclaimered that. =p I'm sure he said a lot that I missed, but the things that stuck in my head were "senior promotions" "switched with space wolves" "have read the codex" "have seen the new models and they're awesome" "first part of 2010" "limited store space so when something goes on the shelf, something else comes off"

I assembled that into the best report that I could, crap that it was. Didn't even dawn on me to ask good questions, I was focused on winning my game. =p

Why not make all the space marine variant sprues "direct only" and ship them out in plastic bags? Surely that would save a lot of space.

About to eat your Avatar...

Do people still play WH40k solely on the whimsical hope that there will actually even be a revival of DE?

Sounds pretty odd...

Personally, I'd blister pack the tank upgrade sprues and just have the basic tank box on the shelf. (i.e. rhino on the shelf in a box - razorback/predator/vindicator/whirlwind sprues in plastic pack like templates).

That'd save a load of space. Less space for races other than marines but still space saved.

Saying that, it made even more sense when the tank conversion parts where a blister of metal bits and they didn't do it then....

I'm tempted to edit the title to add "about Dark Eldar" in so we can get J.H.D.D. to pop by!

I still can't believe that DE haven't shown up yet.

SOMETHING must worry GW about them...

We have a winner!

Sounds like someone was pulling Dash's leg. Nearly all of GW in the US is based in Maryland, unless they've done some serious restructure the only people they have out west are regional store managers.

My guess is that someone was trying to act like a big shot when they are a nobody.

Think about all the rumours that start off with, "I was talking to some GW [manager, redshirt etc.], and they said..."

Just goes to show...

Redundant? GW could have saved shelf space by repackaging their plastic space marine range so that you bought 1 or more combat squad boxes and upgrade sprue boxes for the rest of it. They could've done the same with all the SM tanks, and ideally every other range. They would've saved a lot of space on a lot of shelves this way.

Now whose to say?

Personally, I started playing Space Wolves recently for the sake of Russ. Can't wait for the new codex. Why did I decide to play wolves though? One reason: Dark Eldar aren't FOR SURE getting a codex anytime soon. They were my second army hopefuls and I couldn't manage to pull out my wallet to buy them when I knew Space Wolves were getting an update in october. Moral of the story: Get a third army when Dark Eldar are released and actually, FINALLY, get a 2500 list painted up while waiting (though that's 8-10 drop pods TT.TT).

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

Am I the only one whose FLGS sets up special displays to pimp the new codex? When Space Marines came out for 5th, right as you walked in, you were bombarded with a special display of drop pods, codices, and SM boxes.

For IG, it was codices, valks, new plastic guard, etc.

This is what I assumed was meant by "taking an army off the shelf." Stores will only dedicate X amount of their space to large stocks of the popular new stuff, and pimping them with special displays. If you release more than one codex at a time, they won't have the room to do so for both, and if you release them in 1-month intervals, stores won't bother as they won't have time to sell down the extra stock.

Either way, you probably hurt your sales overall if you can't advertise the new stuff like that.

Random observation; anyone else think the shelves in GW stores are too shallow? If they made them twice as deep they could have some of the boxes for things in the same army stored behind each other AND carry more stock! Shocking I know.

Then they'd have the space to stock a wider range of armies.

I think Dark Eldar have officially entered the realm of Duke Nukem Forever. I swear I've heard the same statements from Jervis Johnson and George Bussard about both those products.

"They're coming."

"We scrapped an idea and are restarting, they're coming."

"They've been pushed back on the release schedule, they're coming."

And on it goes.....

Have you ever looked at the shoddy crap they use for shelving? that stuff barely can hold the models on them.. I've been in a store when half it's stock hit the floor when the wall/shelving failed.. yeah, that was funny.

H.B.M.C. wrote:The whole one army in, another one out doesn't make a lot of sense. Aside from the reduction of blisters I can't think of an army that's been taken off the shelves. We even still have DE on shelves here in Oz. And if this really was the case, what was taken off the shelves when Daemons came out? When Orks? Marines? Dark Angels? 'Chaos'?

statu wrote:i think what he meant was, when new stuff comes out, eg all the new DE models, they need to remove the old ones

That's an interesting interpretation. Don't exactly know how you read this:

"...every time a new Codex and army comes out, another army must come off the shelves."

... as meaning that one when one army comes out the old models from same army must leave the shelves.

Well a lot has gone direct so maybe that is it. Rather than a whole army they are piece mealing us hehe.
