Balanced guard the way I see it is not devoting to a style. Not a gun line, army has lots of movement. Not mec vet, as I have a platoon footshlogging it. Have a good sized out flank force but not excessive. Have a good core of tanks, but not the only thing. Basically 3 separate elements, tanks, footslogging and out flanking element. It just does not fit into any of the other dakka type lists. Close on a few but elements of all of the popular lists.

Perhaps they're trying to "spread it around" to different venues this year? I really don't know whether Stan didn't want to host it (doubtful) or whether they just didn't ask him...

So what's happened here? Orks were top tier, so I heard long ago, yet CSM leads with a considerable margin followed by SM? What happens to the game at 2500 points that makes it change so?
Is it the versatility of SM/CSM? It makes sense that in larger games, armies like Eldar that depend on certain units fulfilling certain roles can be picked apart by target priority and left hanging, but is that why?

Lash spam is a great army. First you have double lash... Lash pretty much has unlimited range practically speaking -> 12" deployment minimum + 12" move + 24" range; so the princes can reach completely across the short length of the table unless your opponent deploys in the far corner, which is typically not the case since missions always seem to have objectives.
At 2500 points the lash player can afford to take 6-9 Oblits plus plenty of great troop choices (Plague Marines & Berzerkers). They can design their entire army to be mechanized except for the lash princes and Oblits. The lash players can put more shooting into the army with landraiders, predators, vindicators and Noise Marines.
So typically lash armies will have the most scoring units plus the army is solid all around. Great at movement, shooting and close combat. It's a tough combination. What will be very interesting is to see how lash spam versus lash spam matches turn out. Will these matches tend in end as draws? I think so since the players that have made it this far are all pretty darn good and the armies will most likely tend to be carbon copies for the most part.
SM = Vulkan SM for the most part. These are easy armies to play, they can shoot well and thunder termies are a really tough nut to crack for anyone except C'tan.
I see mechdar as the dark horse. At first I thought these armies are not viable but I was dead wrong. I could easily see mechdar winning it all. Their skimmer tanks are still rock hard, very mobile and very shooty.

I dont think any of that matters.. It will ALl come down to how GW messes up the tournament for the third year in a row :p Last year was a totally illegitimate victory (Im not even getting into the rule questions, but merely the slashing of an hour of game time from the final round).. and year 1 had insanely unfair missions.. Yes, ive been in the finals all 3 years so I know what its like
My mechdar has done amazingly well so far scoring 1st place in both rounds, but we'll see.. My army can take on chaos just fine, but vulkan marines is difficult if they take psychic hood and lots of terms.. its all about matchups

Ive always said it's all about matchups. You just have to deal with the format the best you can. The thing is matchups are a function of how one type of army performs against another. You know there will be a lot of lash spam this year... it's more popular than ever. So far no one has had any issues with the missions and I think that most likely it won't be an issue at the finals. I respect your experience but things change from year to year.

Hasn't been my experience so far. I play dual lash and I've run up against some other good dual lash players and none were draws. It typically goes like this:
- Mech lash beats non-mech lash
- In mech lash vs. mech lash, the one with more sorc's wins
- In mech lash vs. mech lash with same type of lashers, whoever pops transports fastest will take it.
Of course, luck and skill will factor in, but all things being equal will lead to that process line in general.
