I have 11 years of space wolves playing under my belt and do own 2nd ed dex.

Frankly it doesn't bother me. People are alwasy excited about the new army, the ones that get something out of it will stick around.

I am a little bothered by the popularity of chaos "counts as". We didn't use the chaos codex rules to do wolves when yours was better you stay away from ours now. But even then I don't particularly care.

Why does it impact on you in any way shape or form GWAR what other people are using?

@Gwar!: You didn't reply to this:
Let's take this Scenario,

"I've listen to Rammstein for 3 years and I'm a fan of their stuff" -Me
and then
"I've listened to Rammstein for 3 weeks and I'm suicidal for their stuff, I got a tattoo, an offcial mug and I have the Lead guitar's underwear that I bought off of Ebay" -Some other guy

Just because I listen (in your case play) to Rammstein (Space Wolves) for a longer time does not make me the bigger fan.

You just replied to this part of it:
If I'm not mistaken, common sense tells us the world is flat. . .

Instead of trying to deflect the post, and avoid answering the full content, why not answer why a noob can't be a SW fan? Here's a hint: It's not about how long you have been a fan, it's about your devotion/mindset to them.

I've been playing Wolves for a while, and it bugs me slightly that everywhere I turn I'll see someone's "counts-as" Space Wolves list. I liked playing Space Wolves because they had a fairly obtuse codex with lots of weird little things that nobody else understood. However, I don't really play with a large group, just a couple pals. I don't think I'll see another Space Wolves army for a good long while anywho.

this bandwagon will be short lived as the space wolves codex will be hard to play. people will want all the shiny bits then realize that their army is no good.

The wolves codex is not that good and the good builds will be pretty boring. This is my prediction come back to me in 6 months. I bet I am right.

I pondered about maybe buying the codex and trying the Wolves, since I really liked the novels I read about them. However, the fact that I already had vanilla marines kept me from actually purchasing it.

What I find interesting and a bit sad is the fact that every list I see here on Dakka takes HQ:Rune priest (sometimes the choppy HQ for a change), Troops: Lotsa Grey Hunters, Support: Lotsa Long Fangs. Even the counts-as CSM/Squats/whatever. As I said, I don't own it, but are those the only viable choices in the codex? Then I think the bandwagon will slow down rather quick. I mean, where are the Blood Claws, the cool and individual looking Wolf Guard Terminators and stuff like that?

Maybe I'll try them out in two years or so, when I finished building my other armies.

And Gwar!, really, kudos for staying with the wolves so long, but first being bitter because they lost their punch over the editions and now stating that two units out of the new codex are amongst the worst crap in the 40k universe in the "worst unit" thread...be happy, there IS a new codex, no need for new bitterness right now.

Okay interesting situation here, i am starting wolves (kinda of again but really for the first time) When i entered the hobby back in third edition i managed to start both my chaos army and wolves at the same time.

Shortly there after i left the hobby due to lack of funds, being a teen without cash and an expensive hobby is not fun. Now i have re entered the hobby with my chaos army abuot 6 months ago and lo and behold Space wolves comes out, am i hopping on the bandwagon?

I really never got to make a great start on my wolves, i have logan, the old njal model and 5 wulfen thats it but yeah am i a bandwagoner?

That aside, i really don't think it will matter the true space wolf fan boys will stick with them and will stay with them when the nids are dropped, power gamers will jump, but the purists and hobbyists who love wolves for their fluff and oppurtunities will carry on with them, even if they continue another army at the same time.

Agree on your points, Winter.

And I think you have to differentiate a bit between the people that see JotWW and Grey Hunter stat/rules awesomeness and go "NEED TO BUY CODEX!" and the people that are generally fond of the Space Wolf fluff and army style and that think "Hey, a new codex. Might be the right time to finally start this SW army I have thought about for a while now."

I, personally, would see me somewhat in the second group. It looks like a strong codex, but I'd definitely get that army for the fun of building, modelling and painting nice, individual, cool Space Marine Wolf models....yeah, I'd need a Blood Claw squad just for that "RAWR! GOTTA FETCH THE STICK!" attitude.

...darn the thought of just building a squad of wolves just for modelling fun and practice and to have something cool on my shelf starts to rise up again. *grumblesneedtopaintotherstufffirstgrumbles*

I bought the codex the day before it came out (evidently UPS wont deliver to my hobby store on saturday ), and I gotta say, I like what I saw. I like the fluff, but Im not to terribly big on the models (I play Salamanders). But would making my own tweaked Venerable Dread "count as" Bjorn the Fell-Handed count as bandwagon? From the fluff view it would work, cause the Salamanders are also a first founding legion, so its possible that we could have a dread that old, especially since Salamanders take better care of their stuff than every other chapter, Smurfs included

Ok. So suppose that I started playing the game about midway through 4th edition. At that point the SW book was already rather outdated. Because of that, it wouldn't really catch my eye as a new player. Maybe I liked the models and the theme, but I wouldn't really want to bother using a book that doesn't function properly within the current ruleset. Because of this, I go with a different army. Now the new book comes out and I get excited about the SW again because they've got an updated book to fit the current system. This results in me starting a Space Wolves army. Am I bandwagoning?

Even still, someone who started playing at around 4th edition wouldn't really take much notice to SW because the book was old at that point. People see the new book and decide they like the army, so they want to build it. How the hell does that classify as bandwagoning? Thats like singling out someone who is just starting the game (so al lthe codexes are new to them) and reguardless of what they pick, pointing at them and accusing them of bandwagoning. That is slowed.

The people who are jumping o nthe bandwagon are the people who want to use just the rules from the SW book and run wild with the whole "counts as" mess. They're doing this most likely because they think that the rules in the SW book are are stronger than the rules in the original book they were using. They probably see SW as the new "ZOMGBROKENHOTSAUCEWTFBBQ!" and want to be all about it, but only so they can win more games. Either that or they're actually playing Space Wolves now, but their motivation for it is strictly becuse of the rules/to win games. These are the people who are on the bandwagon. People who actually like Space Wolves as a result of the new book (by that I mean the theme, models, feel, etc) are just fine, and it is very silly to call them out as "bandwagoners."

***Note: I've been playing the game since early 3rd edition, this is hypothetical. Also note that I definitely do not think the new SW book is at the top of the the raning system in terms of powerlevel (just in case it felt implied in some parts of the above post).

The problem, Caffran9, is that some codicies don't do their armies justice. Pure Khorne Chaos is a big example. Some codicies don't exist, but people will find other codicies to make it work. Squats for the Space Wolves, for example; Night Lords actually work better in the Codex: Space Marines; Traitor Guard are forced to use the actual Guard Codex. The vast majority of entire-army-counts-as is not to gain an advantage, but instead tell a story properly. The fact that we have to do that is a failing on GWs part, but such is life.

In before the lock....

As a guard player since the 3rd ed list, I can feel your pain, Gwar!. That being said, I AM having much more fun with my guard now-a-days...

Pslotha, image macros do not a cogent argument make. What Gwar! is saying is that there is a a decided part of the community which follows every new codex to see if it's power-level increases, while there are those who have stayed loyal to an army even in the bad times. The long-sufferers have every reason to resent these fair-weather fans. See also: the Boston Red Socks.

Oh come now Gwar. It wont last long. Soon they'll all be slobbering over the new Nids, and then over whatevers next, and you'll be the one who has the old models, and the newer models. You'll be the one who, in 6 months time, acctually has a reasonable sense of whats going on and how to play 'em well. Most importantly, in 6 months time, you'll have a whole heep of Tyranid-N00bs to Pwn back into extinction.

When you call an intimate moment with your partner "the Assault Phase"

Is that followed by a pile-in move?

That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"

Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round?

Haha, this seems pretty damn childish. Grown men are unhappy that other grown men are buying the same toys as them, because they had the toys first, and they really like them more. It's not FAIR! Do people really get upset by this kind of thing?

Gwar, no-one is making you play the other 'fake' SW players, does it honestly bother you that they are buying models? How do you think people should qualify for the 'right' to buy and play with space wolves?

@I-Bounty-Hunt-The-Elderly.
One thing that i noticed when the new Tyranids were released last time was that lots of people go an but the "same toys" but dont acctually put they're heart in it, or their heads. What the problem is is Impule Buying, which causes a Stigma on the existing experienced Space Wolf players.
The judgment made on Gwar for playing the same army as all the aesthetic-based fools out there is fundamentally unfair.

I've been playing Wolves since the end of second edition... I still miss my Wolf Lord with terminator armour, thunder hammer and storm shield with warp jump, combat drugs and medi-pak.

I don't begrudge the new players taking on Space Wolves. I have so many models that I'll be buying very little and someone has to keep GW afloat. I only had to look the army list over to realise that a lot of the "shiny stuff" was over costed for its power level. Grey Hunters, small quantities of Wolf Guard, Skyclaws and Swiftclaw and Long Fangs are the way to go. My Wolf Lord on bike is essentially unchanged (although with WS6 he probably won't need his wolf tooth necklace anymore) and I'll just make a Wolf Priest with jump pack to keep the boys under control.

Taking too much shiny stuff makes for small armies. Wolf Guard terminators should go with storm bolter/wolf claw combos for 38 points. Cheap and cheerful with a chainfist or two to deal with armour/high toughness.
