Indeed, Vindicators are the best bet vs a Monolith.
I'd run a pair of them.
Their high strength blast can instantly kill Warriors and Immortals.

I would suggest to read up on the WBB rules. That helped me out a lot. I don't play Space marines, but have chewed up many a necron player. If he is destroyer heavy just st8s to the destroyers. Also, watch for tomb spiders and lords with res orb. If you pop a spider trailing behind some warriors, all the sudden the warriors wont get there WBB, if you knock over the whole squad. As suggested, the vindicator is great for doing this. You can cause enough saves that a warriors squad will get significantly thinned. Also, get in to close combat. Landraiders, and rhinos. As said Power weapons destroy these guys. Just remember to kill the res orb if Lord is not attached. One might think because Necrons have gause technology they are great at killing vehicles, but this is only a half truth. I have found using a mech army tears them to pieces. Why? They really dont have great vehicle killing units. IMO. I play tau so i am babied a bit. Still, I saw a buddy of mine table a Necron player and he did the whole drop pods/mech army. Think it was end of turn 3 too. Think about this Necrons are marines with better survivability and better base guns. You can try to force a ton of saves, but in the end you need to kill knock over whole units at a time in order to prevent the WBB.

Build a fire for a man and he will be warm for a day; set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.
Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain.
Sly Marbo doesn't go to ground, the ground comes to him. |

People keep saying necrons got nerfed in 5th ed. I never thought they were a strong army to begin with, but I am not sure where they got so nerfed...
As to how to beat them...Make friends with a guard player, play an allied game. Boom, done

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake. |

To be honest and fair. Every non-assault type army got nerfed with the run rule given to all. Eldar felt the hit the most, but still a necron army feels the pain also, being a shooty. There are other things that hurt them and other too, but to me getting your opponent charging you on turn 2 changes everything.

the biggest hurt to necrons is that glancing hits no longer can kill vehicles normally.

The glancing really killed gauss... As a bonus, things like wraiths get to turbo-boost and flayed ones get to outflank, but with EVERYTHING going to CC how can an army who's base I is average 3 with a model cost of at least 22 points stand a chance?

I understand that, but I still say run ruined all shooting armys. Glancing was big too, but it could be off set by getting 3 rounds of shooting or more. Despite what people think Necrons are pretty bad in melee combat. It almost voids your points and when playing a necron army you cant void your points at all, because your units already cost so much. One could also say that while other armys have gotten upgrades new units and all kinds of new toys necrons still have a lot of the same units they have had for a long time.
I am critical of them because I really think they need and update almost as bad as dark eldar, and i have been holding out to buy a necron army to see what those changes might be.

They weren't so much strong as they were mindless. You could build almost any list with them and do ok. Not great, but ok. You had your monolith spam which was alright because the monolith is a giant armor 14 death engine, but even in fourth and third this list died to people routing it with phase out. In my opinion, the best list in fourth and third was as many warriors as you could take, two lords with, res orb, and a veil of darkness. March it all at your opponent in a giant block and veil when necessary. It worked because the basic necron weapon killed anything. Enough shots took down infantry, and with glancing capable of destroying tanks you didn't have to worry about varying your list. You weren't great in combat, but you could survive and tie up the enemy and maybe veil away and shoot him.
But in fifth you can't kill vehicles on the glancing table. Add to that (and this one is the big one in my opinion) now the minus to your leadership in combat resolution is calculated as the difference in wounds. So now those squads who could tie up an opponent eternally with their get back up roll or simply veil out of combat are being run down with negative 3's, 4's and 5's to their leadership in combat. And when Necrons are run down they do not get a we'll be back roll.

I do agree with you actually. Shooting armies don't do nearly as much now because of all the mech spam, new CC characters, new vehicle rules (flat out, etc). What I see with necron is that they're incredibly slow, which is very fitting for them of course considering the fluff. But without being able to shift quickly it seems so easy to be overrun and outflanked. And I think necrons are pretty bad overall in CC too. I have seen a gaunt squad survive against a warrior squad for 3 rounds or more just because they're slow. Wraiths are wonderful but I don't know how many I've slaughtered with lots of S4 shooting. Destroyer lords are nice, but they never have much support if the whole army isn't full of the jetbike units like scarabs, wraiths, etc.
Your reason for not buying necrons is the same reason I am only buying troops for my dark eldar army. I want to see what's going to happen with them before I go and buy tons of raiders and ugly wyches.

Vindicators would be very good to back up your force. But one thing I really stress is just ignore the monolith and concentrate on all things that go against the phase out rule. The monolith is a big bastard that if you are taking out enough warriors each time will not fire, so it will just be a floating portal instead of its whip. If you really need to take out big units, just go after any lord with a res orb or tomb spyders just to completetly decimate any chances of WWB.
Also Happygaunt put it best

Pie plates or engaging Necron Warriors in cc.
They will break easier than in 4th ed, thanks to the new cc resolution rule.
