No. Space Marine is something completely different.
Supposedly these are renders from the 40k MMO which is supposed to be out in 2011-2012ish.

I wait with bated breath, like every other serious fluff nut out there.
Really, if you want to look for a game-changing aspect of 40K that will differentiate it from WOW, that would be the fluff (as others have pointed out). The idea and imaging portions of development are already quite advanced. Filling in the blanks with production and balance will be the bulk of the work. Frankly, if they have a technically skilled team (and these illustrations look GOOD), this will be hard to screw up.
WOW is a Hannah-Barbera cartoon with axes. If Vigil go the other direction (grit and darkness), every 40K geek out there is a guaranteed customer.

IIRC this game will focus a lot more on ranged combat, which might be refreshing. I'm picturing DoW Last Stand on a larger scale. I hope the graphics aren't as hi def as these shots depict. WAR has beautiful graphics and suffers greatly therefore. I don't care about chipped and weathered armor, I want the game to be playable. And if this game is going to be another Space Marine feth fest, count me out.

The concept team works on an entirely different schedule to the game dev team - so they probably have concept art for a whole bunch of things. Makes it easier than delaying the rollout because there aren't any proofs to sit on the engine.

Remember, in 5 years graphics will be a whole new ballgame. These models will probably be pretty par or even subpar and needing a retouch by then. It's the mechanics- both software and game progression- that will need to be truly interesting to make this thing a winner.
Many have been predicting that the next MMO revolution will be a game that harnesses user-generated content, both objects and missions, to a greater extent. I hope Vigil is looking to go that direction. With a review board accepting contributions from a legion of obsessed people who already model stuff like crazy in RL, we might have the most quickly-harnessable content-production community possible.

This game is going to be terrible, mark my words. In the 40k universe each individual is a meaningless puddle of matter scattered across a galaxy unfathomable to the individual. Now there will be a game where millions of people can be special and unique little flowers.... The sheer number of ways they will have to take a poo all over current cannon and story will be absurd. It is a military universe, where your whole life is decided for you, I don't think your company commander is going to appreciate you going AWOL to get some "phat lewts" in that instance over there while teamed up with an eldar guardian, an ork boy, and a tau fire warrior! If they wanted to adapt a futuristic GW game to MMO it should been Necromunda. If this is a 40k battlefront type game it will work, otherwise I smell garbage.

I am really looking forwards to how they actually pull this off.
The group-building dynamics from WoW doesn't really lend itself well to the WH40K universe.
"Eldar healer, 2 Guard damagedealers, Inquisitor caster LF Marine tank".
Also no matter what happens a lot of people will whine and cry about the universe not being dark and gritty enough, eventhough said people realizes that the targetgroup for such a game is way to low for true Grimdark.

@FreakyE-
A) My precognitive powers can only be used to further the cause of cynicism!
B) When you watch one game you love (aka warcraft 1-3) get destroyed by a terrible MMO adaptation you get a bit bitter when the industry sets its sights on something else you love.
C) Predicting that 40K + MMORPG won't mix is about as hard as predicting that oil and water won't mix well.

Except they won't make anymore regular old warcraft games. And please just because 10 million people play doesn't make it right. That game is nothing more then a flimsily held together pile of constantly retcon'd and rehashed garbage. Retcon'd and rehashed... well maybe it could work, that sounds like GW fluff! But still my biggest fear with this game is that instancing, and almost any kind of cross racial grouping will make about zero sense. They will have to step over a whole lot of things 40K fans take as written in stone and tear it down to make it work as an MMORPG.

Well, now that I'm back from cleaning the mess out of my jeans, all I can say is this:
Come release day F.Y. 2012, I'll be saying goodbye to the next few months of my life.
Definately pre-ordering this, whatever the cost
As far as mechanics, Aztralwolf, you won't be able to mix races in your groups, play inquisitors, or anything else absurd. You'll start out as a basic grunt from one of a number of planets/craftworlds/whatevers owned by your faction. As far as "phat lewts" are concerned, from what I understand, completing various "Dungeons" and missions and the like will be an instrumental part of capturing a planet for your faction, so you're not "Going AWOL to check out that instance". More along the lines of "We have a special assignment for you. You're to take a strike team and complete the following objectives..."
And before you go "So five thousand people do the same mission until you "Capture" a planet? Boo erns" No. The quest system, as far as a google search has told me, will be randomly generated. That means once a quest is done, no one else can do that specific quest, but rather they'll get a different one that may have the same reward(s)

I think making it battlefront like would be absurd. And Necromunda wouldn't have enough variety imo. There's probably going to be a Order and Disorder thing, so no Ork Boyz and Spesh Mehreenz teaming. And I very much doubt that anything you'd do would have major impacts on the 40k universe. Maybe a good scenario would be a Daemon World on the fringes of the eye of terror?
Anyway, I'm suprised no-one's complained about the Ultrasmurfs yet. First they get a 360 game. Then they get a movie. And now it looks like they're going to be the main space marines in the 40K MMO. Hmph.(Cheers for the pics btw )

@karimabuseer- I read about the 360 game, the Ultramarines model is a just a placeholder. They have not decided what chapter you will be playing yet, so high hopes there.
@metallifan- Well I hold on greatly to my doubts. My gut just tells me it is going to be terrible. And besides I will be too busy playing TOR (as long as it doesn't suck)
