Nail that man's foot to the deck!
As for books: Jaqueline Carey writes a pretty sordid political drama, and a reasonable fantasy setting. It is however a touch racy.

It isn't "Fantasy", but the Histories of Rome by Titus Livy are definitely worth a read. They read like a fantasy chronicle full of epic battles, leaders, speeches, etc. Many modern scholars believe that most of Livy's work is in fact pure fantasy, which would explain why they are such a good read.

I don't read much fantasy, but I can recommend some Sci-Fi if that helps.
The Demolished Man is one of my favorite books.
More Than Human is also very good, as is Rendezvous with Rama.
If you haven't read Flowers for Algernon you should do that too. Its a quick read, but very good.

After looking at my bookshelf I've remembered some fantasy books that I can recommend:
The Malazan Book of the Fallen series (what you get when you combine A Song of Ice and Fire with Tolkien)
The First Law series (noir high fantasy)

Another shout going out for Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.
Sounds exactly what you are looking for and a great back catalogue if you like his style.

As was said before, the Dresden Files. They only get more epic and awesome as the series goes on (And Dresden gets some seriously powerful new magical gear).
I would also suggest you try to finish the Horus Heresy if you've got the time. While I admit that the first three were the best of the series (Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames) the later books sound pretty good. I can't back that up much - I'm only midway into Fulgrim at the moment - but I do know that the next two books in the series ("A Thousand Sons" and "Prospero Burns") are about the Space Wolves and their war against the Thousand Sons.
Oh! And if you're looking for Urban Fantasy, take a look into the Midnighters trilogy, by Scott Westerfeld. It's an excellent series, and the third novel is made of epic during the conclusion.
Also, I'm surprised no one has mentioned this before, "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series is a great read. The latest book (Written by Eoin Colfer, author of Artemis Fowl, another fantastic series of novels) came out just recently, though I haven't read it yet.
Hope this helps!
