Executioner with plas sponsons is my workhorse. In a single 3-game tourney it racked up a body count in the mid-70s against Space Wolves, Dark Eldar, and Orks.

If your opponent makes even one mistake in positioning, the Executioner allows you to capitalize on it. By the end of the day, as mental fatigue sets in, your opponents often aren't on-top-of-their-game enough to not make those few critical mistakes.

And if my opponent wants to attempt to out-shoot me from the "safety" of cover, I'm more than content to let him do so. There is no competitive MEQ foot list capable of putting out enough shots to stop competitive mech IG.

How do you keep it alive vs Termicide and Dreads and such. @ 230 points it seems like a prime target for those kinds of units.

Often I leave it (and my entire army) in reserve.

Similarly, mystics are always in my list as are chimera-borne melta units. Any dread or termicide-esque unit that wishes to pop down for a juicy kill has to run a gauntlet of plasma or melta fire.

My vindicator w/ dem possesion could nerf your defiler.

I find demolisher cannons to be much more killy. They have no problem cracking open enemy tanks and will scythe through any armor.

Sourclams hits it on the head here, though I don't bring mystics, since I don't want to get used to them just to lose them when the new codex comes out for daemonhunters. The "staying in reserve" plan is an amazing victory versus many termicide/dread lists. Sure, drop pod near my board, close to the place my melta vets will come from.

If you have a problem, a Demolisher Cannon can fix it

You find a weapon with a better stat block to be more killy? I never would have guessed =p

The only thing a vindicator has going for it over a defiler is the demolisher cannon, and even that still does not make it a better choice in most cases imo. The vindicator for the points should have multiple back up weapons. A defiler can still stomp into CC firing its flamer (firing its reaper ac until it reaches cc) after a weapon destroyed result. It comes with daemonic possession free as well (and with the points added to the vindi they are nearly the same before upgrades). The extreme range on the battlecannon also gives you the potential to shoot at least once before the vindi ever gets in range, and on larger boards that only goes up.

not to take the thread too OT, if you don't mind me asking, what else did you run in the tourney, tank wise? and what other heavy slot choices do you think complement the Executioner?

My list consisted of 6 chimeras, 2 hydras, an Executioner, a plain jane Demolisher, and 3 Vendettas. Melta squads, inquisitor plasma squads + mystics, autocannon platoon squads, and psyker battle squad.

The Hydra and the Vendetta both work very well with the Executioner. In general they crack open transports, and the Executioner does its thing.

Aside from being an offensive powerhouse, the Executioner limits the options that your opponent has. Oftentimes I leave it in reserves or deploy it behind my Demolisher to deny any good option shooting-wise. Thus my opponent has the option to sit in cover and try to out-gun-duel an army with more than fifty special and heavy weapons, or boldy charge forward out of cover and into the range where the Executioner reaps a bloody tally.

The Executioner is a tool that a good general can just make work, almost irregardless of what your opponent's list presents you with.
