I know, I think that the pun is lost on most people now that it has been so cloesly linked to the chapter. Marines that are Ultra... That are also blue... Ultramarine blue.

Then the whole thing gets double,triple, time/space/language paradox inverted/subverted the UltramarineS blue.

i think there overrated because no one appreciates their core fluff and character but mainly because every 12 yr old has them and they get the cover for every box-set and codex cover now days.

i personally prefer imperial fists over all chapters, but if you really want to make ultramarines cool, make them the tyranid haters they are, or if you want to do it different, make them roman super warriors form sparta and have lots of dead tau form the crusade they absolutely pwnd in

I don't like them for the fact that it's them that are on the box of every SM set. I know it's providing a consistent image and something that's instantly recognisable, but it's just a little wearing. Also they're background essentially saying "they're the best 'cos they're the BEST" is just as annoying.

Having said that, I guess I should hate Tau from the T'au sept, or Tyranids from hive fleet Leviathan (spelling?), or Cadian Imperial Guard, but I don't. Hypocrisy?

Gotta say, it is a pretty stupid name. Black Legion, Iron Warriors, Dark Angels, Black Templars, Imperial Fists, etc are all cliched, silly, but appropriate names. Take a strong, dark or sharp sounding adjective, put it before a similar noun, presto. 'Ultramarines' though? What next? Supersoldiers? The Outstanders? Megathugs?

I hate them because of those stupid 'Gauntlets of Ultramar' (or whatever they're called) The ultramarines go round acting like the chapter of all chapters, making everyone else feel small and unworthy. And yet these uber-fists weilded by Calgar (and the primarch before him?) were taken off of a fell champion of the ruinous powers!

For crying out lound, as far as Im concerned that means they are using a deamon weapon of sorts. (and yeah I know theres no proof of this, but still...) I can only imagine the following conversation:

Ultramarine: "Look at us. Aren't we awesome and loyal and blah blah blah"
Inquisitor: "Yes you are very loyal aren't you. Where did you say you got those big fists from again?"
Ultramarine: "Oh we found them down the back of the sofa. They aren't Chaos Related in the slightest, Honest"
(At which point he panics, runs back to Maccarage and the Ultramarines sit their doing nothing, just like they did in the Heresy. Leaving one very bemused Inquisitor)

There is a Ultra Marine player out our store who is 36 and has 7000pts of lovely painted Ultra Marines, he has read all the fluff for them an is fericly loyal to saying they are the best of the best in the imperium, he actualy refuses to team up in any team game with a none Imperium player. buuuuuut hes also a good natured guy who plays a very well balanced list with Calgar (because thats what ultra marines would do) we do make fun of him, but not because we hate Ultra Marines, its just because we get such fun responses from him because he will quote lines from books about slaying the heritic and such lol, hes not crazy, its all in good fun, I personaly just dont like the bright blue and a hourse shoe is kinda a silly army logo *coughColtscough*

I dont like the super smurfs since their fluff never brounght me into the world.The dark angels to me have great fluff same with space wolfs and the other chapters.

Not really hate, just the inner Chaos Marine of me sees any loyalist and wishes to break their legs and have them whimper back to the imperium like beaten dogs. That and Calgar's 'I throw my bullets so hard I re-roll to wound with UBER GAUNTLETS!' makes me shake my head.

Consider yourself lucky. I have seen probably 20 Ultramarines players, ~90% of whom were twelve-year-olds.

On the subject of the Tau: An Imperium narrator inferred they were using sterilization. He's not the most trustworthy source, obviously, and he only inferred it from the fact that no children were being made (There's other reasons this could happen that don't involve sterilization). If they did, sure, that's bad, but we've seen the Imperium commit the same crime. Mind control? The Tau use a very subtle form of mind-control that's more like indoctrination, but it's hardly worse than the Imperium using servitors in practically every avenue of life. The Tau are not good, but they're definitely much more lenient policy-wise than most of the other factions. I personally think the closest thing to good guys are the Space Wolves, Ultramarines, and Salamanders, as they consider civilians more than mere tools (As the Tau and the higher-ups in the Imperial Guard do).

On the Ultras: They just are on all the products. I used to hate Ultramarines, not because I hated their fluff, but because I saw an army on every box (And when you see something everywhere, it tends to get annoying). Now that I've read a bit of their fluff, however, I have to admit they're a lot better than I expected.

It's the same reason I hate Black Legion Chaos Marines, they aren't the only powerful warband out there. Just the most shown =/

It is just the super common space marine chapter. And it seems so blaah and vanilla. And the temprement of the players.

OK there seems to be alot of reasons not to like them.

On a serious note, at my FLGS, I only knew one Ultramehrens player, and he was the one who got me into 40k. I don't hate them. It is kinda fun to poke fun at them though. I mean, every piece of fluff you read about them is "ALL THE XENOS AND HERETICS HAVE A BUG UP THEIR ASS BCUZ THEY CAN'T B ULTRASMURFS KTHXBAI" and that their worlds are an absolute shiny veritable utopia where everyone is happy, and shiny and golden and everyone is loving and *retch*.

I do find the level of hate directed towards UM amusing at times but other than that it doesn't bother me cause I started them because of the original UM captain (plas pistol & power knife) from years ago, because I liked the look and the Calgar model/fluff were pretty good (even if the fluff was a bit non-existent)

But even I as a staunch fan find the Avatar punching a bit much. But then all of the new characters especially Sicarius as he's based on that original model that got me into 40k. Everyone seems to need something to moan about so the poster boys are as good as any to pick on, that and the vast majority of UM players I've seen - though I default to RG or DH if I have to play against one - are young and don't have the skill or the will to make good looking armies and just have the Calgar model for the rules.

I hate ultras because they are extremly comon and they are pretty much the only flawless and perfect people in amoungst all the grimdark. Being the best makes them ooh so boring. I play with 3 SM players all of which play ultra's, its so dull.

Hmm, maybe because they get so much attention from GW. Get the feth over it. They're only super-humans. Then you add it the fact that most of the forums hate them, and you just feel like you have to go with the flow (of hate).

When I first started out with my AOBR boxed set, I went with the Ultramarines because I didn't know much else. The only other chapter I knew of was the unsupported Blood Ravens. Once you get started with an army, I think you tend to stick with them because otherwise, what are you going to do with those units? You spent time, money, and effort on building and painting them.

Once I got further into the hobby, I started to see how many people dislike the Ultramarines. It made me a little embarrassed to have them as my army. Over time though, I realized that the people who hate them are never very good at cogently describing what exactly they don't like them (other then that they are popular). As someone who rags on my sister for liking Twilight without myself having seen or read it, I can understand that phenomenon, for sure. It's natural to hate on the popular thing and be all internet awesome. People like to tear things down for being successful.

I play ultramarines and I love em. Sure they're the posterboys of GW, but, if it wasnt them, then it would be someone else anyway, and all this playa hating would be the same but with a different name.

I started back in the Rogue trader days, and I read that book several hundred times. Back then, it was all about the crimson fists and Ultramarines and so I picked my side and stuck with it.

I'm not going to be a chump and say, ULTRAMARINES RULE, because they don't. No special rules, no funky history, the whole colour of smurfs thing...I never knew that until the Internet came along.

But everytime I go into a GW and look at the walls covered in boxes painted in my Army, I can't help but think for just a second, all of these are for me...

Isnt that why we all play the games anyway, because we think that its Our game?

So go you Ultramarines, when someone calls you an Ultrasmurf, own it, and throw it back in thier face by being a better player and wiping the floor with them...if you can...

If you can't, then swear revenge for later, content in the knowledge that your taking back the name of Ultrasmurfs and wearing it with pride.

Besides...it could be worse fellow Ultrasmurfs...you could be playing Necrons...

I always thought the hate was because people assumed it gave them "interwebz cool guy" bonus points.

Now remember kids those points can be traded in for whatever flavor-of-the-month army the popular kids are currently playing...

There was recently an enormous thread called "Defending the Ultramarines" or something along those lines that went into great detail on why some people dislike them.

Mainly, it breaks down to a few things:
1. Lots of people resent the attention Space Marines get compared to other factions, and Ultramarines are the SM poster boys.
2. Their fluff has always been boring. They are essentially the template chapter, with no flaws, no deviations from the norm, no unique combat doctrines, just clean and sterile and boring.
3. Matt Ward has lubed up their fluff to the point of ridiculousness, so now instead of being the default Marine, they are the Jesus Marine that is unstoppable and "the mostest" at everything, and every other Space Marine (or any semi-intelligent creature really) are drowning in their own bile they are so jealous.

To summarize: obnoxious, boring and super gay.
