Good work. When you first started him up, I thought that your armature was too bulky, but I think you made it work just fine.

Tek wrote:Seriously inspirational. Great job dude. I think I'm going to have to attempt sculpting now - you make it sound so easy!

Well, it was easy because I already put together the skill set with other projects. For example, the robe was easy because I had already done commissar's coats (which were built off of experience doing scarves). The face was easy because I had already spent a lot of time carving down faces and sculpting in ears, etc. Pretty much the only thing that was completely new to me was the hands and boots.

The rest is just an intensive, scaled up use of all of my other practice.

Mr. Burning wrote:What diameter are the tubes you used for the framework?

1/8ths inch. It was the right size for the legs, but I think I'd use something smaller for the arms in the future. I got it from a hobby store for mega cheap. I have no idea what the original purpose of them was.

Izirath wrote:I think it's a well executed sculpt, considered making a tutorial? I know I would appreciate it greatly, you make it look so easy

So, I'm unsure how Dakka handles tutorials. Is there something specific that I need to do to qualify, or do I just wait for a mod to move it?

As mentioned, ease comes from practice. That said, I'd dare say the hard part wasn't pushing the greenstuff around so much as it was sticking with it. Lots of scratch builds end in half-done abandoned failure (I have a chimera chassis that is in this state).

1/8ths inch (outer diameter). It was the PERFECT size for the legs, but I think I'd use something just a touch narrower for the arms in the future.

So, I'd say the most important piece of advice I can give is to have another miniature to use as a guide. The reason the arms and legs are basically the right length is because I compared it to the length of the appendages of another model. Likewise, the torso and head are roughly the same size as their GW counterparts because I roughly measured them to be equal. Also, the particular way I folded the cloth was based on the model I was looking at, and I spent a lot of time looking at the hands and faces of existing models so that I could have a base line.

Obviously nothing here is an exact copy of something off of the Cadian sprue, but having something to near-mimic ensures that I get something that looks similar to the models it's trying to fit in with (because it's based off one of them), while at the same time looking slightly different.

Hope that helps.

This bit alone very helpful, being inspired by and keeping with the current look of your minis will definitely enhance the authenticity of the model. Its the same in 2d, you want to know the reality of something before you can make it your own. Kudos and great tips. Thank you.

Congratulations, your dismissive and conclusory commentary has provided nothing to this discussion or the wider community on whose behalf you arrogantly presume to speak nor does it engage in any meaningful way the remark it lamely targets. But you did manage to gain experience points toward your next level of internet tough guy.

Yeah. The thing is, though, that I'm an artist, not a businessman (despite several attempts). If you know of anyone who is looking to pick up a sculptor...

Yes, it really is my first scratch build. That said, I didn't decide to just go buy some GS one day and try a scratchbuild. A big majority of the skills needed for this were learned over lots of little projects (you can see some of my GS work here, with the stuff lower down being older).

The only new skills I needed for this job were making a frame (which was surprisingly easy), making a face (parts of which I had already done) and making hands (which, once again, I had some experience with, and was the only distinctly challenging thing of this). Really, this was just me sitting down and actually putting to use all of those other little things I had been doing all this time into just one place.

Thanks. Not only did I do it to show how one would construct it, but also to prove that I had really put it together stage by stage

This, I was worried about the bulk too, but then I thought maybe he was going to be a beefy astropath (which would be sort of cool), but after looking at the end result my worries were unfounded.

Good job!

Really inspirational work Ailaros. I think I'll take the plunge on some of the models I need which have lame GW sculpts.
