Thank-you so much. I really put alot of effort into the skin. I feel the skin is kind of the centerpiece of orks and if you do a good job on it the rest of the mini always looks good.

Here is what I am working on now. Another trukk, twelve more boys, and the warboss. These will complete the compulsory two troop choices and an HQ.

Just got the skin basecoated. Not much to look at yet, although you can see my new favorite painting handle on the warboss. A can of Cambells soup. Tasty and convenient.

Here is the trukk still in the shop. The engine started life as a Tau ion cannon. I hope to put a hood on it as well as fenders on the front wheels, a small roof over the driver, and a gunner shooting out of the back if I can get it all to fit. Also it will have six wheels. I think all my trukks will have six wheels and roll bars to unify the look of several of them. These ork vehicles are so fun to build, but also a challenge to get them to be orky, but still realistic. I don't want them to be slap-dash looking ork vehicle that are unfortunately too common.

I made this little press mold from a spot on the bed of the trukk. I hope to churn out a few copies for conversion purposes by cramming a wad of GS in it.

What is this sorcery, how do you paint the skin of your orks so well? Awesome models mate, my orks looks like crap compared to yours!

Awesome work, I will check this blog everyday from now on!

Awesome work. Your attention to detail is great.

I feel the same way about the "slap-dash" look of ork vehicles now. I've been struggling about what I want to do for my trukks, so I'm eagerly watching this to loot some ideas.

Keep up the great work.

Unfortunately there is no magic trick to do the skin. I Start by basecoating it either Goblin Green, Camo Green, or a 50/50 mix of the two. Then I wash it with Thraka Green all over. Now is were the patience comes in. Using the thraka green all the muscles are shaded as if they are individual pieces. I gradually build up six to ten thin layers of Thraka in the areas were shadows would naturally be cast. This is partly why I like to prime white because you can look at the bare white model and study were the shadows are. Using thin layers helps keep it transparent which creates a smoother blend of colour. I begin highlighting with the origianl basecoat colour then add Bleached bone to this in small amounts highlighting up until I finish with a very light minty green colour on the most protruding areas, usually on the face. It is really about studying how the light falls on things and trying to mimic it. As obvious as this sounds I feel it is the key to good mini painting. I think a less skillfully blended model with the colurs all in the right place will look better then a well blended model with the colours all wrong.

Cheers mate, i'm going to try it out right now.

Well after some testing on two models I have to say that it doesn't work for me. :(

Anyway, we want to see some new pictures!

Awesome really vibrant without being unorky. For tying in the vehicles together don't worry too much. Mine were all different colours as I wanted them to resemble stolen Imperial vehicles and then I added Blue Graffiti and a stylised Flame motif to each one (I call it a stylised flame motif in fact its a crude Red, Orange and Yellow Zig-Zag which appears on them) and they tie together fine.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Wow, some of the nicest orks I've seen. I like the rust effect you did on the weapons of the first guys. And I must agree with some of the others, I admire your dedication in finishing that beast of a trukk with all those small details and still have it awesomely painted!

I'M ALIVE!!!!

Happy to be reviving my old thread. I haven't posted in the last year and a half but I have been painting. Just to prove that I do finish what I start here is the trukk from ages ago. After wiping off an inch of dust I finished building the vehicle and gave it a speedy red paint job.

Stay tuned for some more boys, a warboss, and a bunch of Privateer Press Trollbloods.
