LOVE this stuff.. I especially like the Sawrus. You'll find puns aplenty in all sorts of things as your Japanese knowledge expands.

There are so many neat bits and pieces in hobby stores over there. I was lucky enough to be in Shizuoka when I was there a few years back. Tamiya is based there and Bandai have a massive facility too. I think the massive 50' gundam now lives there if you're interested and not too far away.

I recommend taking what you've made and showing it to the people at your local shop.. perhaps they can introduce you to like-minded souls.

Ok so Gonk is more or less done (sort of). Will probably add pouches and stuff and maybe some spare magazines for his shooters but yeah provisionally he's complete. Also need some tips on how to do fine strings, namely the stitches on his left arm and the laces on his boots. Have plans for future scavvies but I'm not sure whether to paint these guys now as a batch or sculpt them all at the same time and then paint them all (probably the former).

Gonk is looking good. Coral head should be turned into a model armed with a shotgun!

Sculpting.... I have always had a hard time with fine detail thin bits like that (with it wanting to stick more to everywhere but the place I want it). Never tried shoe laces but I would try a small thin rectangle of green stuff where the laces will be. Let is cure for a bit then getting a wet scalpel push horizontal lines into the rectangle to make a semblance of laces. Alternatively roll out some green stuff in to a very thin tube, make it as lace thin as you can. Cut it so that it is longer than the lace would be and place it on the boot. Then press the ends down into the boot leaving the middle part lace like. (I fine grease proof paper excellent for rolling GS on).

For arm stitching... I used this technique for raised scar tissue once. Thin rectangle of green stuff, wider than the the scar. Put it in place then push the sides down onto the model leaving a raised area in the middle of the rectangle (like an inverted T). Then carefully try and blend the areas you have pushed down into the model without damaging the raised area.

Anyway buddy hope that helps. Oh and you should definitely alternate painting and sculpting. I find that if I model a whole project in one go by the time I come to painting I want to move onto something else eg my Eldar, Death Guard, World Eaters. Also from a selfish perspective I really want to see Gonk painted up .

I tend to try to keep colour schemes pretty muted (browns, greys, dark, rusty metals) but I'm going to try to do a lot of OSL coming from the bright green toxic tanks as well.
Peter those sculpting tips worked a charm! As a result Gonk, Inflatus and Mr. Hitchkin (playing around with names for the scaly) are currently on the painting desk.
Epic find in the FLGS today has left Gonk wondering where the top half of his boss has gone (just popped it on a base for scale):

I've finally finished painting on Gonk and Inflatus. Been really busy, which is why it's taken so long! I'm going to add spray lacquer to these so these might be the only photos of them before they get ruined!!!
Not too happy with the paintjob on Gonk but pretty please with how Inflatus came out:

They look great. Gonk's paint job looks fine. As for Inflatus you've nailed it. The lumberjack shirt looks brilliant. He reminds me of the way John Blanche paints miniatures not necessarily the techniques but the feel. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of the gang .

The bases on the chaps look excellent too. They look realistic.

Thanks for showing us your cool stuff. I like the effect you have got on the Elf's cloak (My internet is playing up so he didn't load before I posted the above, so it was a nice surprise going back and seeing him).

Cheers lads! Really appreciated the feedback. PDH you've got it dead on. When I paint, while I do use many of the techniques I've read about on here and other places I tend to get carried away and just do what my fingers tell me to haha!
The lacquer didn't ruin them either, which I was amazed by!
It was the Tamiya Colour flat clear stuff that I used, just a couple of light coats over them all.
They've since received static grass and dry basil to the bases. I know Necromunda's probably supposed to be devoid of plant-life but I really like the imagery associated with plant-life growing on post-apocalyptic terrain.

Finished mini's looking superb jack Excellent sculpting and painting in effect there on both models.

Phew I'm glad you understood what I meant about the "feel" of them.

As for Necromunda and it being devoid of plant life...its not true. We have rubber moss (its comedy watching gangers run and fall on it), wire weed (think living barded wire that hurts you at strength 6) and my personal favourite the brain leaf (that actually grows inside your gangers and turns them into mindless tool for it to use as protection). So while plant life not be abundant or particularly friendly on Nercomunda its definitely there.

I also like your paint style.. it reminds me of john blanche. Esp on the 'wierdo' guy the blues and pinks on his head are beautiful.

Are you mostley drybrushing though? The reason i ask is you style really looks great but where it falls down is on things like shoes, gear and other such accsesory type things. I have a feeling that if you perhaps defined these things with a little more layering type highlights/shading, your minis would really pop.

Just my 2 cents worth. Keep it up as i'm really enjoying the updates.

ATN looks like your question's been answered, that is, indeed, a dark elf cold one head (love those models).
With regards to the techniques I use FTL I tend to use drybrushing only for the final stage when I try to muddy up things like their boots, which is maybe why they get lost a bit. I also tend to leave those sorts of things 'til last and by then I've generally lost interest and put less time into them (shameful I know).
But my general technique is to just use watered down paints and slap them down wherever I see fit. With Inflatus I started out by putting the blue on his skin down and then filled in the rest, trying to work up layers of graveyard earth and bleached bone and then threw some blood red into the mix to get the pinkish shades that you see as I wanted his skin to look almost transparent, like a foetus. I don't think I fully grasp the "layering" technique as I haven't really taken time to fully read up on it/watch videos about it. I tend to find it difficult to get up to those final highlights, which I think are what really make models "pop".
I've started painting the scaly but maybe I'll try watching a couple of vids first to see if I can take him to that next level...

I think the key with layered highlights is patience... drybrushing is quick.

I thought i had already posted how much i like your work , but looking through again , i see i didnt , so here goes , i really like your work, very " contemporary" and almost animated, i feel like you charceters are very well rounded in their design. i would love to see a animation , or comic about them. they dont sceam 40k , which is a good thing imo , creativity is not bound by gw alone , but it helps lol

Unrelated. I hope you don't mind me posting my DnD stuff but there was quite a cool moment in our gaming session yesterday when I noticed that my character was face-to-face with an enemy model that was really similarly equipped. Looked like they were just about to clash.

Absolutely fantastic, ... completely original and unique. I LOVE every bit of it.

Jack - As you know.... I really like your painting style Mr. Fortescue is just gorgeous. I like the random power plants coming out of his skin and the glow from them you've got on the cog .

The chipped metal off cut at the front of his base looks real. Have you used metallic paint or a NMM technique?
