Absolutely... because Wikipedia is not only a reputable primary source, but Games Workshop knew someone would incorrectly use it to find the name of a fictional book...

Nope, that goddess represents: Fertility - The Astartes produce many offspring chapters, codexes & tons of cash War - Herp_a_Derp Sexuality - The raging boner GW gets when they prepare for a new Mahreens "release". Makes perfect sense.

Astarte = Venus/Aphrodite. There were lots of names. Many of the greek/roman gods were associated with war but with different aspects of it. Ares/Mars was all about the savagery, brutality and pointlessness of war as well as about skill at arms and machismo. Athena/Minerva was about strategy and the martial applications of technology as well as weaving, money, etc. Aphrodite/Venus represented the more emotional and petty aspects of war in addition to her other aspects more concerned with love, sex and seduction.

Athena was the goddess in charge of Wisdom, craftsmanship and war. She leapt armoured from the head of Zues. That must have been the Motther of all Headaches. Puts my megrums into perspective.
As a woman she has to do lots of things and is also the goddess of multi-tasking. As I said earlier. she is more associated with defensive and protective aspects of warfare symbolised by her aegis. Due to her wisdom she is also seen to embody the strategic aspect of warfare also.

You could spend forever going over the various ideas and terms GW has "borrowed" from other sources. I would never expect them to get too far into worrying about how accurate or how open to various levels of interpretation their borrowing will lead their fans to obsess about.

Astartes is just one of the two words that combine to make Adeptus Astartes when combined they come up with an entirely new meaning that hopefully has nothing to do with the definition of the word Astartes that wikipedia has defined and also remember anyone can edit wikipedia so this could have just been someone trolling us SM players because they were jealous of our awsomeness

The goddess has been around a lot longer than GW
Astarte without the 's' which I think may have already been pointed out.
They were actually thinking of the song,

Zeus tricked Athena's mother ( iirc Rhea) into turning into a fly, and then swallowed her. Some time later, he then developed a splitting headache. When his skull was cut open, Athena jumped out.
iirc, the whole thing came about that way because Zeus had heard a prophecy that Rhea's daughter would cause him trouble. Or as usual in Greek myths, hearing a prophecy caused the listener to attempt to avoid the prophecy, which ended up actually bringing about the circumstances that the prophecy described...

cutting gene encoded organs out of the dead chests of they're brethren and then planting them surgically in the chests of pre-pubescent teens seems like a rather round about way to go in terms of reproduction.
Right, bald old muscle-bound men planting the seed of their dead comrades into young boys is a very creepy way to reproduce. Automatically Appended Next Post: Eumerin wrote:Ares was the Greek god of war (though Athena was also at least somewhat militant).
It's more appropriate to say Ares was the god of battle and tactics, while Athena was the goddess of war and strategy.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
