I don't mind special characters really. I mean, yes, those undercosted ones are amazing for their points, but I don't see how it's any less invasive than if a tournament said I could not bring a Hydra or my Crossbowmen don't count as Troops. I also haven't stopped running a Hydra (ortwo) in my lists just because lots of other Dark Elf players do as well. Granted, it's not like we have alternatives for the beast, but there isn't much you can use as an alternative for Throgg either is there?

If you allow SC, you only see the same undercosted dudes repeated ad nauseum - Teclis, Throgg, Skulltaker, Fateweaver, Khalida, Grimgor, Wulfrik - and none of the actually interesting, actually special (as in, unique and fluffy not just OMG THE SEX!!) characters. But I digress.

Salvage, quit making me feel dirty!

Although, people taking throgg in a non-theme list I can see as being a little underhanded. But if you're taking a troll army (and not using marauders / warriors and the like for your core, just trolls since throgg makes them core) I don't think it's dirty!

Is Throgg really that insane? I need to re-read his entry, I thought he was just kinda neat with the multi-vomitting (which admittedly did get inadvertantly enhanced in 8th) and making Trolls core.

Well, his vomit breath weapon combined with his regular vomit means that in a single round of combat (once per game), he's putting out 3D6 hits (not attacks) that are strength 5 and ignore armor. In other words, if he lives to strike, he's taking out most of a largish unit of knights by himself on that turn!

The rest of the time, he just has D6 of the above, but it's still awesome (also that D6 is magical). Or 5 strength 5 attacks if you're facing low-armor opponents and don't trust your D6 roll. That breath weapon turn is just a bit crazy with the rules for using it in combat now... so for 175 points, he's pretty beastly!

Obviously, the best thing to do is challenge him and avoid taking all those losses, but then he can just save the breath weapon for later. He's not unstoppable, just a combat monster for a deal of a points-cost. And with most people not taking unit champions anymore, I've found he's able to attack rank and file, or take on a character, quite often. He has died before striking... but if he strikes, there's not much left afterwards.

Ok, that sounds like one of the most broken things ever if he lives to puke. Thanks for clearing that up!

Oh, lol . Didn't expect quite that reaction... but yes, it rather is . Hence my saying he's only really reasonable if taken in theme lists!

Last time someone took throgg I took skulltaker....

Throgg was pretty confident until his head was rolling across the field.

Exactly... although (unless skulltaker has flaming attacks, I'm not sure) he always has a chance to make his regens and still strike, but he's going after pretty much every other combat character out there! Other than GW-weilders...

Skulltaker with a HKB on a 5-6 doesnt care to much about regeneration.

The mental image I get of Throgg squaring up against a gromril clad Dwarf lord and then just barfing all over him before jumping up and down on his poor melted face is hilarious and disgusting.

I like the idea of a regiment of noble High Elves, with the sun glinting off their spears like red flame, their blue and white banners flying in the wind, trying to maintain their dignity after being covered in vomit. And then, a second or two later, trying to maintain said dignity when the vomit starts to eat through their armour.

Or maybe Dark Elves, with remorseless hatred burning in their eyes, some grim and silent, others frothing at the mouth, and soon after all covered in that same vomit.

Really, it's hard to take anyone seriously after you throw up on them. I guess that's what I'm saying.

Or like... 36 whole points worth of slaves!

There really isn't much that can't be dealt with by throwing skaven slaves at it...

Ideally, the WoC player is able to see that giant block of slaves coming, and avoid it...

I'm still slightly undecided on that strategy, though... as I went after a large block with a unit of treekin one time, and pretty much was going to mow right through it in 3 rounds of combat or so (we had to call the game so I didn't get to see). Sure, it's a waste of time... but it gets it out of the way to go after juicier stuff.

Throgg and a full unit of trolls would make quick work of even a large unit of slaves, if he uses the breath weapon. Then go after bigger stuff... however, I'd still rather avoid it and send a cheaper / less killy unit to be tied up with the slaves for the whole game.

Problem is, most of these people running throgg run him in a troll-star in monstrous horde formation.

Coupled with the fact that most skaven players are taking at least two, usually three units of slaves 5x10 its pretty hard to simply avoid them.

Also I dont see throgg wasting his breath weapon on a unit of slaves tbh. (which, if the skaven player is playing right, is all that the unit will get into combat with, while WLC's and WFT's eat the unit)

But I digress, this isnt a lolz how do you beat the unit thread.

Throgg with a bunch of trolls, supplemented with other aspects of the army is a very strong list dont get me wrong. However you need something besides trolls since many players give their killy units the flaming banner as of late.

Definitely agreed here... and skaven have always been a tough matchup for me (with any of my armies), just giving my thoughts on what to do in that situation

true, Skaven are, in my opinion, the strongest army in 8th edition right now...

Sure sometimes their war machines do stupid crap, but for the most part, they benefit the most from the new rules.
