Actually, the first post is pretty specific that you may also choose Store Credit.
If I didn't already have 2 Mega Dreds, I'd absolutely be in for converting one of these into one. I don't really have a desire to convert one to DE, so... I'm out. : (

I'm not crazy about the fact you have to buy the model from them, I get that they are trying to generate some sales but this just seems a bit shady.

What a ridiculous comment. Yes, it's a promotion designed to drum up sales and there's nothing shady or underhanded about it. It's being done in an open, obvious manner without any deception or trickery of any kind. The increased sales subsidize the product giveaway. That's how these kinds of promotions work. No one is forcing or deceiving anyone into participating. Businesses need business to survive, not giveaways that do nothing for their sales. As Bob Fossil would say, "Look reality in the face and lick it!"

Ahh, well count me out then. Just curious, is there any particular reason for limiting the scope of the contest like that other than "because I don't really feel like looking at those?" It seems a bit arbitrary, and also seems that you're losing a lot of sales from people who would be otherwise interested.

The theme of the competition is no power armor (non astartes).
I thought it would be fun to see what other uses we can all come up with for the DK besides the normal one.
It may not appeal to everyone that would normally want the model.

Perhaps it would be best to explicitly state which models are excluded, as the scope has migrated from "non astartes" to "no power armor", which aren't the same thing. I certainly never considered Sisters to be Astartes. What about Chaos Traitors? Daemonic possession? etc, etc.

Sorry for bringing up the fact that the contest seems fundamentally flawed. I hope the winner enjoys making his money back and the not-winners enjoy their fun conversions for use in counting-as a real unit.

The simple thing to do would be just not to enter.
Personally it's a good excuse to have a go at converting. If you're worried about parting with $60, you may be in the wrong hobby. Unless you haven't noticed, the web is awash with other races players wanting to use the model as something else, so I'm sure there's plenty of interest. Personally, I don't like the model. What I do like however is that someones giving people a prod to get them to change it into something they do like. If I was in the US, or was a customer of spikey bits, I'd be on this like stink on something brown. I just don't see the need for such spiteful comments, when someone's simply trying to promote his business.
Some people take the reins in this life, open a business, do something they like. Other people sit at a keyboard for half thier lives, angry at everyone else who's done something with thier life. My point? Chillax, go do something nice. It'll smooth out those rough edges
Great idea, why don't you come up with an alternative contest - put your money where your mouth is?

You also bring up the wonderful logical fallacy of "If you can't make a better version, shut up". Good work.

Not at all.
But I can't agree with your critique of the competetition, unlesss you can put your money where your mouth is. "If you can say this is crap because XYZ", you gain some credibility. "If you can say this is crap because of XYZ but here's what I've found works", then you've got my attention. I see no evidence of any competition organisation from you, and nothing to suggest you run a business yourself, so while you're free to harp on about how bad the idea is, I'm still free to disagree.
A quick example of putting ones dollar in ones masticator. I run a commission painting business. I want people to use me. In order to get people to use me, I haven't derided the work of others, nor simply said "I am awesome, use me" - I have given people the opportunity to decide for themselves by calling the shots on some of the items in my portfolio, like a dry run comission. It gets people into what I'm doing, and lends me a bit of credibility when they see examples of how I would work for them.
Replace your inferred "if you can't make a better version, shut up" with a factual "If you can't make a better version, at least try. If you can't try, at least be constructive"
Naturally, it's your right to disagree with the above - you might find more support however if you weren't so vitriolic.
