Indeed, and don't get me started on the amount of 'pro-painted' stuff on there, which if it was pro-painted must have been done before the advent of paintbrushes and painted using a crayon.
All I can say to some of them is, fething hell mate, things must be pretty desperate where you're living if you're relying on that for your income

$800 authentic copy?
It's funny how it seems everyone feels their bad paint job is worth tons of money, There's always a few miniatures that look like they were painted by a 12 year old with outrageous starting bids because they feel they are a pro.
The paint job has to be very good to be able to get more than the origional worth.

Hmmm! Interesting! The one thing that strikes me is his willingness to include a Codex Assassins with the Diorama in German...
Have dozens of old WH40K books and the original Diorama was made by a GW 'Eavy Metal Team Member in Australia if I remember right... Will double check it... I know it was NOT a German Creation.
This is more likely a Copy of the original as I know beyond doubt that the original still takes pride of place at GW's HQ at Lenton Lane in Nottingham... Its a part of their museum.
Definatly NOT worth $800... Not for a copy!

OI!
That said, there are some real polished turds out there. I don't see a problem with selling painted minis, it's akin to commission painting after all. Where I do see a problem is auctions like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Orc-Warboss-40K-Pro-painted-/300542769694?pt=UK_Toys_Wargames_RL&hash=item45f9beba1e
You got that mini for what? a fiver? You haven't even drilled the barrels out. You're about as pro as a bout of flatulence on a first date. Don't charge 40 quid! And economy delivery! You're sending a pro painted mini is a frikking jiffy bag? Seriously?

well, it does say, "It has even won a price in a German White Dwarf Issue."
The funny part being price, not prize. If I pay 800$ for something on the internet I like the ad to be grammatically correct.

Haha
I guess my post was kind of harsh, my main beef I think it with the incorrect use of the term 'pro'. 2nd most irritating behind 'pro', and found throughout the blogsphere, is the over use of 'commission'. 'I was commissioned to paint this mini' - no, one of your mates couldn't be arsed to paint that model, and so asked you to paint it for him. Stop making it sound like you are some kind of engineering company, taking on a year-long project for some multinational company, with huge sums of money changing hands

Indeedly.
But on the flip side of the coin - if you want to buy a mini with a great paintjob as a gift or whatevs, how exactly do you go about searching it on ebay? Do you pop in the search bar "painted" and wade through mounds of minis that are just being sold as not having been stripped? I think "Pro" does provide differentiation for those buiying, but then you've still got a problem with polished turd syndrome.
From a sellers point of view, you've got three camps:
1 - I Paint, and it provides a considerable amount, if not all of my income. I treat painting as my job and make a living from it - good or bad, it's how I feed myself.
2 - I Don't paint for a living. I do not rely on selling my work to eat and pay my bills. I may have the skills to go pro, or maybe I'm semi-pro, but to be honest, I just wanted my auction to show up in peoples search lists.
3- I over value my work, or I have no grasp of financial value. If I'm doing this for a living, I've made a dramatic error in judgement. See my back? It used to have a shirt on it. I will ask extortionate amounts for my passable work. I will make no additional effort. I haven't even bothered to think about what condition you'll recieve it in as I have decided to post the item economy delivery. Occasionally people will buy my work, so I'll just keep doing what I'm doing.
As a seller, "pro" is a good way of getting your work seen and allows you to charge more. As a buyer, "pro" is a good way of looking for minis that are for the most part, finished to a high standard and make a great treat for yourself or others.
It's a massive grey area. All I'd say about pro painted is YMMV. There's always going to be honest folk, and there's always going to be people who would shiv you for a quid. An equal amount of both parties have the chops to call themselves pro.
I'm rambling.
I don't even know if that post had a point. Did I have a point?
I need a cup of tea...

Hmmm, he downgraded the price to what is now, at least, arguably in the ball park of their actual value.
He still left up his laughable breakdown of the value of each of the various units, but at least now he's not acting like a Buy it Now of $100 is value shopping, so good on him.

Here's a guy offering his services on ebay, claiming to have won GD trophies:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ARMY-COMMISSION-JOB-/250800427838?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a64ded33e
My name is Karol Rudyk. My minis won several GD trophies. On this auction did not buy any army or figurines. This auction is for commission job.But only the service request. Not cost for painting. If you want me to paint your army contact me, by ebay message or my mail karolfenris@wp.pl and give list of minis to paint and I prepare list of costs.Below you can see examples armies painted by me in past. This armies are not for sale on this auction it is only example. You can bid auction if you order me paint your army . It let you give me fedbeck for paint job.
I think there may be history here, but someone cross reference that name he is throwing around.

i'm not sure why "FREE MODELS RARE" would be in all caps in the title except to mislead a buyer into buying a free promotional card and walking into a GW store to be disappointed.

For the record, Karol is legit and very talented. However, I don't recommend either advertising commission work via eBay or obtaining a commission service this way.
Latest episode of the Precinct Omega HobbyCast covers how to choose a commission-painting service in some detail as well as giving tips on how to get into it yourself.
http://precinctomega.podbean.com
Broadly, I would say that real pros don't sell work on eBay. But we all need a quick cash injection, sometimes. The trick to picking up a real pro-painted mini, though is to follow painters' blogs and twitter feeds or to look at the front page at CMON, as that's where the real stuff can be found.

i think that would be grounds for a "item significantly not as described" ebay complaint! that penny is technically worth more than the card since that card was free and doesn't even have any stamps on it! also, the shipping price should be 50 cents since he'll just put that in an envelope with a stamp!

R.
That is slightly broad!
It's a good starting point for someone trying to check general reception - selling a few painted minis and testing if people are interested in thier work, however I also feel that following a blog is much more likely to result in a better experience. People who ebay a commission are asking for confusion. Is the price I bid the final cost? Am I going to have to fork out more as the job goes on? Are those pictures in the ad works from the artrist, or ripped? Is the artist going to be good to work with or a complete tool? Those who auction thier services be it legitimate or not face a bit of a smoking gun.
Following a blog cuts out that kind of crap. You know the work is legit, because you will more often than not see in progress shots, and general musings and other convincing ruminations. You get a better feel for the character of the artist, thier working style and the time in which they turn around a project. You get a wider gallery, and usually clear prices and plenty of explanation. I don't know about anyone else, but my invoices also contain my contact details and address, whereas with a negative ebay experience, you've got to wade through a whole process and let them handle your complaint. At least with an invoiced job, you can always drop by to have a chat with the artist.
I've listened to the podcast, and I echo your sentiments. Especially the warning that this is not a path to wealth and greatness! I think that's where a lot of people are falling short of the mark. It's generally well known, at least to the people in the craft, that it's mostly done out of love and when you see merchants peddling mini after mini after mini etc, then you generally get that negative feeling.
