I can second the Cain novels-I've just started Cain's last stand, and I can say I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire series.

And come on, in what other novels could you have blue-painted Tau supporters exclaiming that "they may take our land, but they will never take our freedom!", cheerful Inquisitors, Comissars who shout "WAAAAGH!", or Tech-priests that hum nursery rhymes?

The Cain books do appeal, I liked Flashman a lot.

With those Heresy books, do you have to read all of them in order? I've heard some of them are stinkers...

I'm curious about this too... are some of them able to just stand alone by themselves without having to know elements from a previous book?

The first three in the series are roughly a trilogy. (though I read them 2-3-1 and don't feel cheated by the decision)

All the others are stand alone stories, though it will generally benfit you to be familiar with the overarching Heresy storyline in a general sense, it is hardly needed.

Not really "you have to read them all in order". They kind of hop around in terms of timelines.

For example: Descent of Angels takes place before the Great Triumph, and Fallen Angels kind of/sort of happens around the middle of False Gods.

It's also to important to realize that some of the books aren't really meant to be "oh here's the story of the Heresy entirely" and more "Here's why this aspect of the Heresy happened".

Again: Descent of Angels/Fallen Angels and Legion both come to mind here.
