One melee unit out of how many other things that can effectively take on paladins?

basically that.
Paladins are, perhaps, the ultimate Deathstar. assuming they are used properly. staying in cover to help against the Hig Str low AP shots.
only TH/SS terminators can take them on with confidance(and they will probably be severly damaged by the ordeal)

And even then, depending on the loadout of the Paladins, the Terminators may even bite it. If there's a character with rad and psychotroke grenades, don't even try it.

but even with cover bubblewrap come to mind if I put a rhino in the way you can assualt it shoot it but you can't get at my stuff. And then they get elimnated by more lascannons and melta and I could put a sqaud of meq in conga line to block so you have to assualt my bubble wrap and take another turn of fire.

I doubt I would need the second block they would probably be gone early and if they've got a transport to actually reach the fight then their oh a 800 points so you dont have much more of an army. And if their walking or dsing then I can kill the 20 other guys you have and kill them at in my own sweet time. Brother Thunder

You understate the importance of 3+ cover and target saturation. Really, how many lascannons and meltas are in your usual lists to wipe out a 7 man paladin squad w/ attached ICs in a single turn? more so, what army are you playing?

but now those Vendettas have a dilemma.
shoot the Paladins, or the Psyflemen pumping all those Av12 killing Str8 autocannon shots into you.
and if you are running enough vendettas to make the 3+ cover negligible then the Gks certaintly have enough to afford Psyflemen support.
Paladins NEED support to work. the nice thing is that at 2k+ they can afford it.

my personal support for my paladins are scouting interceptors and psy-riflemen dreads. If I get first turn, those vendettas won't even get to fire any of their guns. Yes, I included a Daemon Hammer for this reason!

Well I play wolves and for your information I could bring for a 7 man paladin sqaud with a librarian is 15 lascannons and 4 meltas which should deal with them and thats to match their points. I could also then match your other stuff eqaully and change heavy weapons after I wipe your pallies from the face the earth as the lascannons should cut down 3 pallies with your cover. But with 9 wounds one could kill the librarian to and thats without adding rhino melta. And all of the sudden you've got a puny five plus invuln. Oh and lots of if's in their brother thunder.

the Libby would be the last person getting wounds put on him.
unless those 15 lascannons are all coming from the same unit, there is no way to have Lascannons wrap around to the libby. and then he has a 3+ cover.
and the unit doesn't lose Stealth immediatly. it lasts for a turn.

Paladins are great, for any one to take them down they need to divert a very large amount of fire power to them leaving the rest of my army to walk up and kick them in the nuts.

Hell, if I wanted to be a real about your guns, I could outflank my paladins rather than footslog them. That and the fact you are focusing all your fire on my paladins and not my interceptors or psy-rifle dreads is doing exactly what I want you to do. The worth of paladins is not only are they a beastly unit in combat, it is that they also play mind games with the opponet on the other side, which our theoryhammer so far has shown you fell for hook-line-sinker.
DO you see their worth yet?
EDIT: PS: if your SW list is running 15 lascannons, then I am pretty sure that once my interceptors hit your lines, there's nothing you can assault back with that would do any damage to them.

problem is your spending like 800 to a 1000 points on your paladins so what is the rest of your army?
ah what are we playing you've got what 20 interceptors.
p.s. this argument is stupid because it's if you bring this i'll bring this and so on and adios it was thought provoking and opened some stuff to me on GK and I like to argue so I dispute points.

We are aruging the effectiveness of Paladins, dude. Even the more experienced GK players are saying they have their place, that they are not worthless as you say. Also, the same argument can be made for the nob deathstars that are usually very effective. 500+ points are wrapped up in a single unit, where's the rest of your army? the answer is the same.

why dont you run a unit of pallies with 4 psycannons, you could combat squad it and get a very but very shooty 5 man squad and a good cc 5 man squad. IMHO. also pallies will suck a lot of enemy fire you could use them as distractions, althought not cheap distractions.

Compare a paladin with a halberd to a wolfguard battle leader with terminator armour, which one is a better buy?
Matter of fact compare them to any 2 wound hqs and see if you think they are a good buy, dont forget you can swap weapons for free or add a psycannon for twenty points.

Would rather not have 300+ pts sitting it out unless the whole army is does such. Plus pretty much all GKs can deep strike, so it goes without saying.

I see what SweetLou is getting at, reading between his capital letters.
The majority of discussion on Paladins that I have read seems to skim over DS as an option, and that's assuming that footslogging isn't the general focus of the conversation.
I expect to be dropping most of my forces in using servo skulls (which are an amazing buy!) I'm confident that enough Pyscannons and SBs shooting when I land will have me eating just a few meltas, las cannons and a lot of small arms which will feel like nothing more than a refreshing shower. I'll have most of my Paladins around on the next turn and will proceed to munch on enemy jerks in combat. If I can, I'll multi-assault in hopes of finishing combat in the enemy turn.
Deep Strike with its inherent risks and benefits is very worthy of discussion. I don't think it's an obvious given to be taken for granted.
