This is why everyone should have a D20. Assign each model a number, 1 through number of guys in the squad. If you roll a number above that, reroll.

Is answering rhetorical questions normal?

I was just implying that this is not an issue worth getting in a fight for.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe.

AW - if you then read the context, it was in relation to the model in range of the assault being the one removed at random - if only half the squads have a power that could make this happen, and it is a low probability occurence in the first place (certainly the number of times only one model is in range to assault when I play is very low) then yes, it IS highly unlikely.

Just get out a d10 and assign each guy a number...roll until the number lands on a guy that is still alive. It's annoying but solves the issue of odd numbers.

On a side note...for anyone who has yet to experience GKs...I perils 4-5 times a game...get used to it.

if justicar is dead and for some reason you have 10 models=

assign the models numbers 1- 10.

roll a d6

if you roll 1-3 its someone from 1-5

if you rolled a 4-6 its someone from 6-10

this gives you two groups of five. How do you roll that on a d6?

easy

roll another d6, ignore 6s and roll again

so if you rolled a d6 and get a 5 on the first roll its ones of the models from group 6-10

if you roll a 3 its model number 6,7,8 so model 8.

if you rolled a 2 on the first d6 and got group 1 then rolled a 6 you would simply reroll and lets say you got a 1 so it was model 1...

you dont need a d10, just reroll numbers for models in any instance that do not exist

Or you invest $.50 in a d20 instead of spending 10 minutes to explain to your opponent what the hell you just rolled.

There is a difference between "random" and "arbitrary."

Your example is an example of "arbitrary," not "random."

Alternatively, have your squad roll off. Track the model who rolls lowest, and re-roll ties.

+1.
Simply roll a different dice after giving each GK a number. With GK, even a D10 should suffice.

I just saw a bunch of Grey Knights playing rock-paper-scissors Ginyu Force from Dragon Ball Z style to decide who dies.

They both won the game

somewhere in the webway

im sticking with using extra bases. paint a number on the bottom of squad. 5 man squad gets numbered 1-5 and so on. if i peril, i get my "draw bases" and add the apropiate corosponding numbers to a hat. opponent blindley draws one. bingo done, no convoluted multiple dice rolling, just a single draw.

although for this to happen, the SRG has to have died, either by other attacks or perils, and then another periils must occur to that same unit. unlikley to come up.
