Nice detail I overread the first time: New scenery in July! Hoping for the High Elf terrain from the army book (tower, building, columns, well) and hopefully not another human skull tower or chaos skull temple.
LunaHound wrote:I havnt played 8th edition yet but is it correct that i can field as many character as i want ( k mages ) aslong as it stays under the 25% allowance?

25% commanders PLUS 25% heroes, so up to 50% for mages!
BTW Warhammer has no need for apocalypse as the FOC is unrestricted and allows for games of large sizes already.
This is a magic supplement, not a big game supplement.

I'm hoping we see something unique as far as creatures go. Right now there are just a few archetypes for monsters and some monster diversity would be cool.

As far as magic goes... I'm not necessarily a fan of the system as it is right now. The main reason for this is because magic does not scale with game size. With little exception, a player has the same number of dice in a 500pt game as he does in a 5000 point game. If the magic system is getting redone or added on to, I hope that we will see some rule that balances points with magic.

Just my thoughts

Yes...but your winds of magic dice don't scale. What are you going to do with one die per mage? 1-2 mages is the practical limit, and that's really only to ensure that your randomly generated spells include something useful (I laugh when I face a single L2 mage and he gets pure junk for spells) The real boon of 50% characters is putting a fighty hero in each regiment to boost LD (and damage output, but that's secondary) in low-LD armies.

As for monsters, I want EVERYTHING in plastic:

Basilisk, Griffon, Chimera, Hydra, Lamia, Phoenix, Manticore, Roc, Dragon, Wyvern, you name it, churn out the plastics!!!! (I'll still only field 1-2 per army, max, and zero for my empire forces, but I want to paint them all)

same number of dice in a 500pt game as he does in a 5000 point game

Hmmm...if GW sees folly in that, it'll be for economic reasons...being limited to 2D6 plus channeling (and a hard limit of 12) is really a disincentive to play larger games...which would require more models, generating sales for GW. The renewed emphasis on large blocks of troops sells models, but the magic system is a drag on sales...

Agreed. 3k is the most that is able to play with the magic currently. I generally run 2 mages in almost all my lists. My doc list has a unit of horrors as well, so technically 3. If there were ways to get around the hard 12 cap it would be adventagous to take more mages. but getting off more than 3 spells a turn is tricky.

I only ever run one mage, if a slaughtermaster can be called that.

So it's never a worry. But once i run a bigger list, it's two which isn't bad for me. But it's not exactly good overall.

I see it the other way around. Since 1 spell can wreck your day at 2k, it drives the want for a larger game within a controlled environment. That same 1 spell can still be frustrating at 2999, but mitigateable, and manageable. With as powerful as magic really is in this edition.... Magic doesn't become unuseable until 4,500-5k. Then the system needs to be re-scaled, we found that by adding an additional d6 per 1500 points past 3k seemed about right.

4500 was roll 4d6, opponent gets highest 2d6.
6k was roll 5d6, opponent gets highest 2d6+d3
7500 was roll 6d6 opponent gets highest 3d6, so on, and so forth.

I like it. I have always though about adding magic items that would allow a boosted magic phase. Something expensive, so generals have to take lord level wizards to field them. I have to say though, that I like a straight increase in the number of dice even better.

Runnin up on ya.

Yeah, an expansion and dwarfs and ogres will be left out; I'm sure. Ogre magic's mostly buffs and we have models for all our "monsters" and Dwarfs don't use either unless they have some uber-rune.

Just like with that 40k expansiion last Summer that just focused on IG, I guess my money's safe this Summer too.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

That is exactly what I was thinking as soon as I read my email from GW a few minutes ago. Unless by "fliers" people meant dragons, demons and griffins (or daemons and gryphonnes in the alternate GW spellings) and the like, Summer Of Fliers would appear to be a bust.

Pic on the right looks like a Cockatrice. I am suitably intrigued, but my armies are fairly small scale and Warhammer Apocalypse is a bit beyond my small playing circle.

In fact reading it back, the table effects sound more like Warhammer Planetstrike. Yay plastic Monsters though

I reckon dwarves will get some big machinery to match the monsters. I'm anticipating some kind of massive flying battleship affair, or maybe something similar to the Anvil of Dooooom, but bigger, and more powerful.

No idea for Ogres. They are not an army I am familiar with so I don't want to speculate.

Or, it could be happening a month or 2 afterwards. That's the thing about the stupid way GW hypes things.

I hope this expansion is supported longer than something like Storm Of Chaos or Eye Of Terror. In the "old days" of 2004 and before such expansions were never supported more than a couple years and then all the projects hobbyists may have done relative to those expansions were rendered obsolete as far as Warhammer game rules were concerned. Fortunately, Apocalypse, Cities of Death, etc. seem to be something GW wants to see remain part of their core system long-term, but that's a relatively new concept for the now roughly 30-year old company.

Anyone played WaR? Theres a big blinkin Cannon in the Dwarf starting area. I can see it now, kills Monsters stone dead in a single shot, wipes out half a Horde unit in a single bounce.

It really depends on which monsters they release, although it likely wont be more than five. The only armies I can see having a problem with Monsters are Tomb Kings and Dwarves, the rest I can see using beasts in some form. They'd have to have either plastic Slayers or some amazing Explosive Axe Cannon Ballistae Flamer Volley Mortar Catapult. Tomb Kings will need their Bone Giant or some equally undead monster.

I don't see where there's a problem. They are getting a monster kit in May, some other armies are getting them this summer. Some already have them. No problem. And no more news for a while obviously. Bye to this thread.

This isn't a Summer Campaign, this is an Expansion. This is going to be more like Planetstrike and Cities of Death than Storm of Chaos or Lustria. It is the new approach to things with the core games. They don't want to do those themed campaigns anymore that are just good for a summer. The goal now is to have actual supplements that are long lasting when people want to play variant games.

Dibs on not having to play 'Storm of Magic' - magic is the single biggest problem with 8th, and I for one would less of it, not more.

Hurray! More things for Warhammer that I do not want more of. (magic and giant beasts)

We need to have the "summer of re-released rank-and-file". That would be a great summer.

New Terrain does sound good though, and I would like to see new monsters, even if they do let Trish sculpt them.

I like how they call it summer of magic, but we mostly seem to get monsters.

Just call it summer of monsters then

Hopefully the terrain will be usable for everyone & 40K too.

Indeedy, it has Heroic Killing Blow and according to the Rob Cruddace interview on the GW website, was designed to be the ultimate monster killer (Flashman sighs and packs away his freshly painted Abomination).
