Exactly. I don't think he got where he is by luck alone.

True, I definitely pack melta to deal with AV14, but that's besides the point - like Reecius said he doesn't run into Land Raiders often in tournament lists, and this is a tournament-winning list. With Land Raiders out of the equation, pretty much every other AV14 vehicle out there that he would encounter (Battlewagons probably) will be AV10 on the back.

I voted reecius SW will win before I looked at his list... then I was like hmmm maybe not, it may just end up being a draw or possibly a lost if GK gets first alpha-strike on those typhoons, dreads, and/or razorbacks. I dont doubt reecius's skills and list making, but I am lobjectively ooking at both players as equals and the GK list is pretty mean looking.

@just Dave
People criticize my list sometimes and that's their right. I don't mind, I've had a lot of success with it and I think that speaks for itself.
@thread
the razors are with the long fangs in case of dawn of war so that I don't lose too many turns of shooting. In other deployments, the grey hunters just hop in.
I don't care for Las plas razors myself except for BAs. I find I am always moving my tanks and prefer the increased accuracy of twin Las or the versatility of twin assualt cannons. To each their own, though.

Oh yeah, that's fair enough Reece, of course. Although it's their right, I'm not sure they should. I guess it's due to the amount of success you've had with it and how it's a really well-rounded list. That's just me I know, but still...
Honestly, I'd struggle to find any holes in your list. I think I'd opt for Living Lightning over Storm Caller, but that's it. I'd go for a 2nd meltagun too personally, but as you said, you rarely face Land Raiders.

Wow, didn't expect that outcome.
jy2's fortitude dreadnoughts and transports is a force to be reckon with. So many tanks getting weapon destroyed, wreck, and blown up!
Once again, Crowe single handily decimates whole squads. This time he racked 1 Long Fang squad and 2 Grey Hunter squads. Had the game continued, I wonder if that 3rd Grey Hunter squad would have suffered the same fate.
Well done jy2! Congrats.

Yup, well played, Jy2! You thoroughly kicked my ass in that game.
I made two huge mental errors that cost me the game.
1.) I brain farted and thought his dreads could only stun Bjorn. I knew they were strength 8 but for some reason I thought auto-cannon and instantly assumed they could only stun Bjorn, so I bum rushed Jy2's lines with him thinking that I would take out his dreads with Bjorn. In my mind I figured I'd have to weather one turn of psycannons and then I'd be in combat, wreaking havoc. That obviously didn't work out so well, and I basically handed the win to Jy2. Had I not done that, it would have been a draw at worst.
2.) I forgot about fortitude. I have not been playing much lately and only played Grey Knights once before this and didn't encounter fortitude. I was going through the motions of stunning a vehicle and then moving on to the next target. I totally forgot that he could ignore the effects of stun or shaken.
So well played to Jim on a good win and a fun game. I know my Wolves can take that army (although it would be a tough game every time) but I made two huge mistakes that cost me the game. Oh well, that is the best way to get your edge back: a good ass kicking! I won't make those mistakes again.

Well done jy2! Congrats.
It was mainly due to a few mistakes on Reece's part and the dice. He was rolling badly and I was rolling well.
Crowe certainly can be nasty. Had we played my turn 6 (we skipped it), Crowe would have most likely wiped out his 3rd grey hunter squad and consolidated to maybe contest the SW objective (that was where I was heading and what he was trying to stop me from doing by screening out Crowe).
Thanks, but this game was sort of an aberration. The dice really deserted my opponent this game and were on my side. I guess Lady Luck felt sorry for me after the beatings I took from daemons twice and also tyranids. Ironically, the dice were also on my side that last time I played against Reece as well (my nids vs his nids).
Reecius wrote:Yup, well played, Jy2! You thoroughly kicked my ass in that game.

Thanks for the game, Reece. I had a little luck this battle. I'm sure next time, it's going to be much closer. I can't do much to your long fangs....so I just basically ignored them! I still have to figure out a way to deal with them.

Vindicare taking out the Squad Leader could reduce the number of targets the Long Fangs shoot at. Another solution is Callidus Assassin, but she rarely appears in TAC lists.
BTW jy2, I've decided to bring my Sisters tomorrow. I expect more competitive players than the ones I normally face at Oakridge. Plus my unpainted Kroots and hounds is an eye soar.
@Reecius:
Yeah, your luck was terrible.
The new GK are a lot different compared to what they were before. 4 TL-Str8 at 48" is pretty nasty against opposing MSU. I played 2 mech lists against jy2, both boasting at least 9 or more tanks. The psy-rifle dreads decimated my vehicles in both games.

You have a lot of luck with Crowe, or I had bad luck. Only thus far played one game as GK, and I assaulted a squad of 15 burna boyz with Crowe. He came in, cast his cleansing flame and caught 2 boyz. I then proceeded to try and parry their attacks. They caused 3 wounds, I failed all 3 saves. Reroll, and fail all 3 again, death to crowe. So basically he came in, starting the flame and caught 2 boyz before tripping and falling on his own sword. Thankfully, next turn the same storm raven that dropped crow off to his death moved up, dropped a dread and purifier squad, killed the big mek with the shock attack gun, dread blew troop deff dread, and purifiers assaulted 30 boyz killing all with No Retreat without taking a single un-saved wound.
Great report, interesting game.

I too was curious why Bjorn was so gung-ho, but Reecius' explanation makes sense (well, sense in that it was a mistake). Lovely bat rep, cheers.

Realistically I think there isn't much you can do about this. Unless there are obvious targets which have to die (because they are in a threatening position, or they do much more damage than everything else) then I would still follow the same routine of accepting a shaken/stunned result and moving on. Certainly it didn't seem like you were shaking all his Dreads and then blasting away at Rhinos, you were shaking Dreads and then moving on to MORE Dreads, which is still your best option (rather than blasting away at something until it dies, because he still might fail the Ld test).
The only other thing which could counter it would be getting your Rune Priest over to his lines, but the chances of that happening are pretty much non existent.

With DoW, getting my priest into range to stop fortitude was going to be tough.
Doing it over, I would have deployed in a forced flank and played defense with Bjorn. That way, Jim would most likely be unwilling to shoot Bjorn for fear of turning him into an objective that I would take. I would have focused fired on top priority dreads until they were neutralized, and then moved onto the next target.
Anyway you slice it, that is a tough match-up though. Jy2's army is pretty nasty against MSU mech lists like mine, plus his little squads are better than mine in HtH, so I have to be smart about where I play my units.
I look forward to a rematch though, I think round 2 will certainly play out better from my perspective.

tbh,
I think the grey knights as played here are the kings of msu due to their reselient vehicles.
On the other hand fire power is evenly matches between both.
@reecius:
you really feel you need flamers in that list? only 4 times 5 core seems a bit risky in objective games no?

I could have stuck him in a Razor half way up the board...and then have him die immediately! Haha, but yeah, it is possible and if there was some LoS blocking terrain it would have been a good choice.
@Valek
I run 2 and 3 units of 5 at times, and have not had any problems with it. I like the flamers because they are free for GHs, and they give me some crowd control. Honestly, my GHs almost never even get out of their transports.

That is one of the drawbacks to having nothing but small units.
But the first turn is nightfight and JY2 he does not have any searchlights, so that is some protection. If you pop smoke then you should be ok, and even if the razorback gets taken out you can hide behind is as long as he does not roll a 6. He then has trouble getting fortitude off. The rune priests role in this match-up is to shut down the Grey Knights psychic powers. Jaws and Stormcaller are not going to be half as valuable as that.
Personally I would have gambled it since the effective range of Grey Knights is 24" (other than the dreads) I would have started just back from the center of the table...let's see 6" move 3" disembark so 24"-9"=15" into the table. Since Reecius started on the board with 2 razorbacks anyways, just have them sideways, 2 deep and he will not be able to shoot trough them. This is all Monday morning quarterbacking though because until you play against fortitude, you do not realize what a pain it is.
My comment though was just a joke and I was being tongue in cheek with it to Reecius because his comment struck me as funny. He will get practice against the Grey Knights and learn of their tricks.

How do you manage to get TL-AC LOS with the dreads if they are 1-6" behind a rhino? Normally, the barrel would either be pointing directly toward the tank side armor... or you have to aim them upward, preventing you from drawing LOS to the target...
If you model them any differently, aren't you modeling for advantage?
Of, if you do "accept to play with them firing from behind a rhino" then the target should be getting 50% cover (again, due to dread weapon placement).

Despite some bad rolls and mistakes, I think reecius probably would of gotten no more than a draw at best. Those asslt/bolterbacks didnt really do much except getting destroyed.
For round 2 you should replace them 3 with more TL las or even las/plas. Deploy bjorn and the rest of the army as far as possible and try to take out the rhinos/dreads. Make jy2 come to you with those 24" range psycannons.
