Necrons can come out on top. Tyranids restore their strength via absorbing biomass... Necrons give them nothing on that account. And in the Xenology book, the Necrons discover the core bio-organism that lies at the heart of every Tyranid construct. They can create a bunch of viruses and plagues and wipe the Tyranids out.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

Pheonix, Arizona

The Tyranids will win no matter what. How they win really depends on how fast the Tyranid's main fleets arrive. All the lore on them says that the hive fleets the imperium have encountered are vanguard forces for something huge. If that fleet arrives before Chaos finally unites and unleashes its full fury into the materium, all sentient life is eradicated and the warp becomes a blank realm of nothingness. Even if Chaos can get unite before the fleet arrives they will sign their own death warrants because with all sentient life destroyed like the gods want, the warp still becomes nothingness and the hive fleet just moves on toward the next galaxy.

Stop bleeding and fight back!

First, they must travel faster.

Second, they must have wild birth rates to recover from long wars they would wage.

Third, they must defeat every force in the galaxy.

See a problem there?

The only problem being that Tyranids give nothing to The Necrons, no souls to harvest, and The Necrons take no pleasure in killing. Essentially, they will both either die out or move on, there will be no massive un-ending war between those two, as neither has anything to gain from fighting.

Wrong, the C'tan utilize them to harvest Souls, which resides in most Biological life, the Tyanids don't have them so no gain by fighting them, unless the C'tan start sucking the Hive Mind out of them, or something similarly weird and improbable. True, The Necrons would want to stop them first, but there wouldn't ever be some massive un-ending war between the two once all the others are gone.

Well, if the rumors are to be believed, C'Tan won't be an issue anymore with the next book.

All things considered, I think the Necrons would have the greatest chance of coming out on top. The only two ways they've been encountered thus far has been as random raiders and awakaned because some asshat tech adept decided to push the big green button, tether a power connector to 'that marvelous spider-looking thng', and generally 'do science to it!'.

And even then, the different races have had to throw everything they had just to slow, maybe stop, and somewhat rarely eliminate Necron forces. A full-scale conflict with them would be...game over. In space, they should be damn-near unbeatable. On the ground, that's a different story, but even in that theater they're a nightmare to fight.

So youre wrong?

Because, the others won't be gone as the necrons will just end the threat of the tyranids.
Like GW showed us in 5th ed fluff.

Nids meet necrons = nids erased.

I've criticized those who wished Mat Ward dead in the past, however, if he does anything as stupid as that then I may join them. Mixing things up is fine, but mixing things up is like saying The Necrotyr are aware of what they're doing inside their shells but can't control it, or that the C'tan were just evil Old Ones. This rumor would be amazingly horrible in my opinion, retconning to the exact opposite of what happened before.

Yet people were suggesting, again, some massive un-ending war between the two once all the others are gone, which in both our views won't happen.

Simple, tyranids kill every thing but crons because they cant get biomass from them. tyranids move on, necrons go to sleep.

40 thousand years later new life has evolved and the necrons wake up again for round two. But this time there are no nids to steal there kills.

Yeah, that's what I've been saying, it's not a solution or an alternative. If that happens then the Tyranids come back and the process repeats until the end of the universe itself.

The rumor I am referring to is that the role of the C'Tan is supposed to change in the new book (much like DE completely changed to a flourishing race of space vampires with their new book). Now the Necrons will have a lot more personality at the higher ranks, and the C'Tan are just another weapon they wield with impunity.

You guys have only been discussing part of the question. "What army will win" also begs the question "how are all the other armies going to lose?"

As mentioned before - Necrons are Immortal robots that can't be eaten, and they keep coming back!

Dark Eldar can hide in their webways and run away from anything through the entire 40k Universe if that have to. Nothing is faster than Dark Eldar.

Chaos Daemons are daemons - enough said.

In order for tyranids to lose, you'd have to kill an AWFUL LOT of tyranids. Maybe if all the other armies allied together against them...but when is that ever going to happen.

Eldar - This race has already been losing for ages but still hasn't been destroyed. What makes anyone think that that pattern won't continue?

For the Imperium to lose, its opposition would have to deal with the combined force of ALL the space marine chapters, all of those Imperial Guardsmen, the witchhunters, etc etc, and then it would have to run around the universe searching for imperial settlements to destroy like needles in a haystack. Humans have this odd tendency to ally together against common threats.

and the list goes on. no single army could win due to the survivability of all the other armies.

Chaos will as chaos devours all through either sanity, greed, or pleasure! and in the wake of millions of demons who just respawn in the warp when dead... yeah survive that!

Or Necrons after all no one really knows how many there are they just seem to turn up unannounced!

Tyranids won't as they seem to always get cut down...

The orks will learn they have to remove all biomass in the vicinity and burn the dead,
basically scorched earth technique
nids are overrated,
orks are engineered as the ultimate war machines, they learn fast
they adapt, are strong, hard to kill their population can grow exponentially and they can make about every weapon. If something gives the warbands a common goal which they think is enough fun the nids and everything in the vicinity is doomed

None will win. There's nothing particularly grimdark about that. What makes the game setting alive is the all the possible outcomes and the tenuous balance of power between the factions. It looks like a pretty evenly matched galactic stalemate overall unless something majorly changes in the setting.
