Manticore can choose to fire directly or indirectly just like the Basilisk. Direct fire is what lets the Basilisk move and shoot and the Manticore can do the same thing. It's only the Griffon, Collossus, and Deathstrike the can't fire on the move or ignore their minimum ranges.

Basilisks alone are good. They become stupid when done in squadrons because all the enemy needs to do is roll a 3+ in the damage table with 2 penetrating hits and your done.
9 bassies are scary in paper, but they are awfully easier to kill than stand alone bassies.

Yea, the squadron rules are nice sometimes, but they also can REALLY ruin your day as well. Immobolize or better and your basilisk goes down, period. And its not hard to score a couple of those results or better to be pushed onto the rest of that squadron. If I knew I was playing against something like that, Id take 3 buzzsaw/rokkit koptas, and snikrot and crew for once.

Not to mention they are all open topped. If a roll a 3 on a pen hit you are dead. if I roll a 5 on a glancing hit, you are dead. Also 3 squadrons of bassies mean only 3 targets per turn. Not so scary at all.
Squadron rules are not nice. If you suffer 3 damage dice, you have to allocate them to all 3 of your bassies. Turning a stunned result into shaken is a woop dee doo useless advantage because if you move 1 basilisk in the squadron, the entire squadron counts as having moved.

1-2 bassies is all a player will ever need in a standard game. 1 Bassie hiding behind other vehicles for cover is actually reasonably survivable.
Open topped makes throwing them into squads suicidal. Plus they have the same problem that Russ squads have, if 3 pies will kill a target chances are 1 pie would kill it just as dead.
9 Bassies definitely have their use in apoc games, but then there is no force org and they can be separate instead of in squads.
The other awesome use of 9 bassies is for a house rules custom mission. Play 2 games in a row. Each game lasts a fixed 6 turns. The defending player gets 9 free basilisks. The mission objective for the defending player is to fire rounds from the basilisks off the board onto some other battlefield. The number of shots fired off the board=victory points. When the game ends swap sides with the basilisks, and the other player gets the 9 free basilisks. Whoever gets more shots off the board with the basilisks wins. The same mission works with any super long ranged artillery units such as manticores or deathstrike missiles. It also makes for a good side game that can be played a week before a big apoc battle with the shots landing on the apoc battle next week.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Wow! That sounds like a really good idea, schadenfreude! I am planning an Apoc and might have that go into it.
